Photo's:Junkers Ju 88 A-1 (WNr. 088119) U4-TK of KG.100 sinking through the melting ice on lake Jonsvatnet, Trondheim, Norway. April 1940. When the Germans attacked Trondheim on April 9 1940, they found the airfield at Vaernes unprepared to handle the weight of its transports planes and bombers. Until the runway could be improved, the Luftwaffe began using nearby frozen Jonsvatnet Lake as a forward-operating base. The lake, five miles south of Trondheim, opened as an airstrip on April 11, when eighteen Ju-52s arrived with ammunition. This was followed by the arrival of Ju-88s of KG26 and KG 30.

On April 15, bombers from Jonsvatnet attacked the town of Namsos, burning it to the ground. And although Jonsvatnet Lake would only be used for two weeks, it provided a landing field for troop-laden Ju-52s that would form an attack force to move up the coast. Once the airfield at Vaernes was opened, the Germans were able to airlift in more than 1,500 troops a day. On April 22, an RAF Wellington bomber flew over the lake and reported more than fifteen aircraft operating from the improvised airfield. The following day, the Luftwaffe began moving its aircraft to Vaernes, where wooden planking had been laid down to improve the runway surface. Only an He-111 and a Ju-88 were left at the field, sinking through the ice. On April 25, RAF Skuas strafed the two aircraft, setting the wings of the remaining Ju=88 (U4-TK), on fire.
