Photo 01: An unknown member of I./ZG52 poses in front of a Bf 110 of the unit, its dragon emblem clearly seen on its nose.
Formed 26 Jun 1940 at Freiburg from I./ZG52 with:
Stab II./ZG2 from Stab I./ZG52
4./ZG2 from 1./ZG52
5./ZG2 from 2./ZG52
6./ZG2 from 3./ZG52
For example aircraft codes would of ended up like so:
Stab I./ZG52 coded (A2+AB) became Stab II./ZG2 coded (A2+AB)
1./ZG52 coded (A2+AH) became 4./ZG2 coded (A2+AH)
2./ZG52 coded (A2+AK) became 5./ZG2 coded (A2+AK)
3./ZG52 coded (A2+AL) became 6./ZG2 coded (A2+AL)2 Staffel I. Gruppe Zerstörergeschwader 52- 2./ZG52 code A2
Messerschmitt Bf 110C Zerstorer 2./ZG52 (A2+?K) became 6./ZG2 France 1940
Photo 01: A Messerschmitt Bf 110C Zerstörer 2./ZG52 (A2+?K) showing once again the wide spacing of the unit code characters and the larger fuselage cross. The swastika is carried on the fin only. What appears to be netting of some kind partially covers the fuselage cross and completely obscures the third character of the fuselage code, the individual aircraft letter.

Profile 00: Messerschmitt Bf 110D of 5./ZG2 A2+JK has the revised camouflage applied to the fuselage sides which became more common as the Battle of Britain progressed. The extended rear fuselage points to this aircraft being a 'D' variant. II./ZG2 flew a mix of 'C' and 'D' variants throughout the Battle.

Messerschmitt Bf 110 C 6./ZG 2 Eberhard Heinlein, Guyancourt, France, 1940
6./ZG 2 was formed out of 3./ZG 52, and its aircraft still carried the original emblem of Zerstörergeschwader 52. The original dark camouflage color was, based on combat experience, oversprayed over the fuselage sides, engine cowls and tail surfaces with the bottom side color. Hauptmann Eberhard Heinlein served later as Gruppenkommandeur I./ZG 2, but his career ended with a fatal non-combat flight on September 28th, 1940. Kommodore of ZG 2 at the time was Major Friedrich Vollbracht, who, during the course of the First World War, served with Jasta 5.
