RAF fitters running a test on an overhauled Rolls Royce Merlin engine installed in a Supermarine Spitfire Mark VC (possibly JG873) undergoing repair at No.144 Maintenance Unit, Maison Blanche, Algeria. The aircraft still bears the markings of the 4th Fighter Squadron/52nd Fighter Group, 12th USAAF, with whom it formerly operated.

Info Eduard: The United States Army Air Forces was among the operators of the Supermarine Spitfire Mk IX in the Mediterranean Theatre of Operations, with the 52nd Fighter Group flying the type until March and April 1944, when the unit converted to the North American P-51 Mustang. The group arrived in North Africa as part of the Allied invasion force during Operation Torch, launched on November 8, 1942. The aircraft retained much of its original British camouflage, overlaid with American national insignia, while at least one British roundel remained visible beneath the left wing. Earlier markings were painted over with fresh colors that appeared darker than the surrounding camouflage, and new code letters were added. The yellow outline surrounding the American insignia was introduced during Operation Torch to help distinguish US aircraft and became a common feature on Allied aircraft operating in the Mediterranean over the following months.
