Supermarine Spitfire Mark IXs of No. 73 Squadron RAF, each loaded with two 250-lb GP bombs, taxy to the runway at Prkos, Yugoslavia, for a sortie against retreating German troops and supply lines. They are being watched, in the foreground, by a Bofors gun crew of No. 2914 LAA Squadron RAF Regiment, which provided the anti-aircraft defence for the airfield.

Spitfires IX of 73rd Squadron RAF on Prkos airfield near Zadar on 22nd April 1945. Note the 'sword blade'with RAF roundel superimposed on the fuselages of the Spitfires. This piece of pre-war heraldry, first displayed on Gladiator biplanes in 1937, was borne by the Squadron's fighters throughout the war. The 73 rd Squadron was one of very few units to paint their symbols in full size and colour
