Photo 01: The Japanese captured a number of P-40s conveniently crated on the docks of Java. At one time they were contemplating using them in the home defense squadrons but gave up the idea. Kikugun Kokugijutsu Kenkyusho (Army Air Technical Research Institute, known as Giken), Tachikawa near Tokyo, Japan, 1942-1943. One of the airworthy P-40s captured by the Japanese in the Philippines and Java in early 1942 and subsequently used by the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force (IJAAF) as test and training airframes. The aircraft wears a standard 41 Dark Olive Drab / 43 Neutral Gray U.S. camouflage scheme. The Japanese hinomaru replaced U.S. national insignia (on both wings' upper and lower surface).
