Co!. Earl E. Bates, 79th Group CO with 'LIL Joe III' and the official insignia of the 79th Fighter Group which was painted on his airplane by the Group Flight Surgeon, Dr. Richards H. Hoffman. The insignia was well thought out and was symbolic of the geographical location of the Groups initiation into Combat, it also served as a memorial to Co!. Peter McGoldrick, who was killed while flying with the 57th Group. The Hawk depicted identifies Horus, one of the Egyptian Sun Gods and 'Avenger of His Father'. The Egyptian characters at the upper right signify the Group number. [R.H. Hoffman, M.D.]

This plane named Skipper ironically remained underwater off Capo Portiere in Italy for 44 years following sabotage, before being recovered and restored for exhibited in the Battle of Anzio Museum at Piana delle Orme. Certain features are to be noted like the fine red edge to the underside roundel, the English fin-flash, and its white and yellow registration number. The white 49 on the fuselage was copied on the wheel discs.

This skin represents a P-40L-15-CU Warhawk of the 86th Fighter Squadron, 79th Fighter Group. Flown by Lt. Michael Mauritz. This a/c was lost at sea on the 31st January, 1944 near Latina, Italy. The pilot survived! It was discovered and raised in January, 1998. See this link for more info.

Due to the mirroring problems with the Warhawk void, I have chosen not to place national markings on wing lower surfaces. The a/c would also have had the number 49 on its wheel hubs but the void mirrors these on both side of the hubs. The L version had the Packard-Merlin engine so would not have had the long cowling intake of the other versions but PF has no L so place in your P-40M folder for correct length etc.

Photos 01-03:The operation took place on Sunday 11th, January 1998 on the coast between Anzio and Latina and by the evening the P-40 was sitting on the shore. The plane is in amazingly good conditions and a restoration is foreseen in the next few years, thanks to the Gruppo Amici Velivoli Storici - GAVS, the foremost Italian historical planes restoration group.

Artistic talents of Cpl. Joseph Pumphrey from Ohio, an armourer with 85th FS / 79. FG, were famous in the entire Desert Air Force. Scantily clad beauties adorned many a tail of the squadron's Warhawks. Unfortunately, when in mid-1943 the group transferred out of the deserts of North Africa to Italy, orders were issued to overpaint the ladies so as not to scandalize locals. (James Crow coll.)

79th Pursuit Squadron - 79th Fighter Group

79th Pursuit Group (Interceptor) - 79th Fighter Group

79th Fighter Group

Constituted as 79th Pursuit Group (Interceptor) on 13 Jan 1942. Activated on 9 Feb 1942. Redesignated 79th Fighter Group in May 1942. Moved to the Middle East, Oct-Nov 1942, and became part of Ninth AF. Trained with P-40's while moving westward in the wake of the British drive across Egypt and Libya to Tunisia. Although many of the group's pilots flew combat missions with other organizations, the 79th group itself did not begin operations until Mar 1943. By escorting bombers, attacking enemy shipping, and supporting ground forces, the 79th took part in the Allied operations that defeated Axis forces in North Africa, captured Pantelleria, and conquered Sicily, the group being awarded a DUC for its support of British Eighth Army during that period, Mar-Aug 1943. Assigned to Twelfth AF in Aug 1943 and continued to support British Eighth Army by attacking troop concentrations, gun positions, bridges, roads, and rail lines in southern Italy. Operated in the area of the Anzio beachhead, Jan-Mar 1944. Participated in the drive on Rome, Mar-Jun 1944, and converted to P-47's during that time. Flew escort and strafing missions in southern France during Aug and Sep 1944, and afterward engaged in interdictory and close support operations in northern Italy. Received second DUC for numerous missions flown at minimum altitude in intense flak to help pierce the enemy line at the Santerno River in Italy, 16-20 Apr 1945. Remained overseas as part of United States Air Forces in Europe after the war. Transferred, without personnel and equipment, to the US in Jun 1947. Inactivated on 15 Jul 1947.

Redesignated 79th Fighter Group (Air Defense). Activated on 18 Aug 1955. Assigned to Air Defense Command.
