Photo description: Returning from a strafing mission in Burma where his plane had been repeatedly nit by enemy ground fire, Capt Charles Colwell, Park River, North Lakota, saw another Curtiss P-40 on the ground within the Japanese lines, only a mile from enemy headquarters. After making sure the pilot was alive he radioed for help, circling above the spot so no time would be lost in finding the downed pilot. Soon other P-40’s arrived to form a protective cover. Lt. Ira M. Sussky, Little Rock, Arkansas, landed a light training plane to make the rescue. Nine attempts we’re made to get off the soft ground before the plane was- in the air. Meanwhile the fighters aloft kept tne Jap snipers at bay. The rescued pilot was Lt. Melvin Kimball, Durham, New Hampshire, who had forced-landed while flying from China to India. The rescuing plane landed after dark, almost out of gas.
