Diethelm von Eichel-Streiber was born on 10 August 1914 at Oppershausen in the Mühlhausen region of Thüringen. Von Eichel-Streiber participated in the Spanish Civil War with the Condor Legion as a bomber pilot. He was awarded the Spanienkreuz in Gold mit Schwerten for his service in this conflict. In spring 1940, von Eichel-Streiber served with III./JG52. Von Eichel-Streiber served as Adjutant of III./JG77 in 1941. During the invasion of Greece and Crete, he shot down a RAF Hurricane fighter on 14 May 1941 for his first victory. However, his aircraft was heavily damaged by flak and he had to crash-land on return to his base at Molaoi in Greece. Von Eichel-Streiber participated in the invasion of Russia. On 26 June 1941, he shot down four Russian SB-2 twin-engine bombers near Jassy to record his 2nd through 5th victories. Later, von Eichel-Streiber was appointed Staffelkapitän of 1.(Erg.)/JG77. When the unit was disbanded on 31 January 1942, he was transferred to 10./JG1. This unit was redesignated 1./JG5 on 10 March 1942. On 4 October 1942, von Eichel-Streiber was appointed Staffelkapitän of 6./JG51 based at Jesau, re-equipping with Fw 190s, before returning to the Russian front. On 26 November 1942, 6./JG51 was redesignated as the Stabsstaffel, being deployed under the direct control of the Geschwaderkommodore, mainly in the Jabo (fighterbomber) role. It was during this period that von Eichel-Streiber would record the majority of his victories, being particularly successful against the heavily armoured Russian Il-2 Sturmovik ground attack aircraft. He claimed two Russian fighters shot down on 30 May 1943 to record his 10th and 11th victories. On 8 June, he claimed four Russian fighters shot down (12-15). Von Eichel-Streiber recorded his 20th victory, a Russian MiG-3 fighter, shot down on 10 July. He claimed 19 victories in July, including three Russian fighters shot down on 4 August (30-32), four Il-2s shot down on 11 August (33-36) and three more Il-2s on 18 August (37-39), 19 August (40-45) and 20 August (43-45). On 2 September, von Eichel-Streiber claimed two further Il-2s shot down to record his 49th and 50th victories. On 15 December 1943, he recorded eight victories, including seven Il-2s shot down (60-67).

Hauptmann von Eichel-Streiber was awarded the Ritterkreuz on 5 April 1944 for 73 victories. He was appointed Gruppenkommandeur of III./JG51 on 1 May, a position he held until 24 August 1944. On 30 July, von Eichel-Streiber claimed five enemy aircraft shot down (82-86). His 90th victory victory followed on 11 August, when he shot down yet another Il-2. On 25 August 1944, von Eichel-Streiber was appointed Gruppenkommandeur of I./JG27 serving on Reichsverteidigung duties. He recorded his 96th and last, victory on 28 November when he shot down a USAAF P-47 fighter. He remained with the unit until 30 November 1944. Von Eichel-Streiber then underwent training on the Me 262 jet fighter at Lechfeld. He then supervised jet fighter conversion courses for bomber pilots from IX. (J) Flieger corps. He became disillusioned with this role and was able to arrange a transfer to JV 44. He was destined not to fly with JV 44 spending the last weeks of the war recuperating from the shock of the loss of many family and friends in the bombing attack on Dresden and the sentencing to death of his uncle who had been implicated in the conspiracy to kill Hitler on 20 July 1944. Von Eichel-Streiber survived the war and emmigrated to the USA where he became a successful Volkswagen distributor in Modesto, California.

Diethelm von Eichel-Streiber was credited with 96 victories. He recorded 94 victories over the Eastern front, including 42 Il-2 Sturmoviks.

Luftwaffe Badge

Luftwaffe pilot Reinhard Heydrich

Units: Stab./JG-77(5/40 Norway), Assigned to II./JG-77 July 1941

Awards: Wound Badge, Fighter Operational Clasp in Bronze

Known Aircraft: Bf 109E-3 'Yellow 3' (90% damaged 5/3/40), Bf 109E-7 WNr 3765 (30% dam 7/22/41)

Remarks: Injured in his 'Yellow 3' when he overturned on takeoff from the Sola Norway airfield. Source: SIG Norway. His 109E carried the Adj and SS symbols. A friend of Dr. Erich Mix, he was known to have flown a few missions with JG-1. On 22 July, 1941, in Wk# 3765, he volunteered, along with pilots of II/JG-77, to fly a couple of combat missions against Soviet pilots. He was promptly shot down by flak and force-landed in Moldavia. Following this experience, he made a quick return to his headquarters in Germany. He was most likely the victim of fighters of the 55th Fighter Aviation Regt., who attacked the Beltsy AF the day before. Hitler personally forbade his making any more such flights.

Since there was only a small unit of a 'SS-Flying unit' the so called SS-Fliegerkorps (a small branch of the NS-Fliegerkorps), wich actually never saw combat operations because these Fliegerkorps where never intended for combat than civil or training issues, mostly due to lack of serviceabilty, combat ready aircrafts and experienced members. So this one and only SS-Flying unit was nothing more than a representative unit for Hobby-pilots. Amongst others Heydrich (as a member of the SS) was in service with regular Luftwaffe units, he served some Time around 1940-1941 in Stavanger-Sola Norway-Campaign, Wangerooge (defending Germany's coastline) and Balti (Romania Eastern Front) with JG1 and JG77.

The below is from a message written by Michael Miller a while ago:

'SS-Obergruppenführer Reinhard Heydrich, a talented civilian pilot prior to the war, flew combat missions with the Luftwaffe. His first mission was as a gunner in Kampfgeschwader (Bomber Wing) 55 on 12. Sep. 1939. He then passed an examination as a Bf 109E pilot, serving as an Oberleutnant der Reserve and Adjutant of Jagdgeschwader 77 during the invasion of Norway in Apr. 1940. He then flew reconnaissance flights over England and Scotland in a Bf-110 outitted for aerial photograph. He rose to the rank of Major der Reserve, flying further missions as a reconnaissance pilot in the Russian Campaign. In the process, he received the Iron Cross First Class and the Operational Flying Clasp
(Reconnaissance) in Silber (Frontflug-Spange für Aufklärer in Silber).
(Most of the info. on Heydrich's Luftwaffe service is from Günther Deschner's Reinhard Heydrich)'

A Wiki Article about Heydrichs Flying ambitions:

Reinhard Heydrich served as Reserve Hauptmann, then Major in the Luftwaffe. Some sources claim that he served in the Invasion of Poland as a bomber gunner, but this is not confirmed. Then, despite his advanced age, he completed a fighter pilot course in 1940, probably due to his ambition. Heydrich wanted to set an example and show that the SS were not 'asphalt' soldiers behind the front lines, but the elite of the Third Reich. In April 1940 he flew a Bf 110 in the Fighter Group II./JG 77 'Herz As'[1] in Norway. The planes flown by Heydrich had an ancient Germanic runic character S for Sieg -- 'victory' painted on the side of the fuselage. On May 13, 1940 he crashed his plane during take-off and was injured. For a short time in May, he flew patrol flights over North Germany and the Netherlands. Then, after another accident, he returned to Berlin. In mid-June 1941, before the German attack on the USSR, he resumed flying, ignoring Himmler's orders. He flew his personal Bf 109 again with Group II./JG 77 from Balti, Romania on the southern Eastern Front, which put the wing commander under pressure due to Heydrich's position and lack of experience. On 22 July 1941, while on a mission, his plane was badly damaged over Yampil by Soviet AA artillery. Heydrich crash-landed in no-man's land, evaded a Soviet patrol and made his way back to German lines. After this, he was forbidden to fly in combat, as it was realized that his capture as a POW would be a major security breach for Germany. He never flew another operational sortie.
Heydrich was decorated with the Iron Cross Second (1940) and First (1941) Classes. The number of missions he flew is not known, but he was awarded the Frontflugspange (Front Pilot Badge) in silver, which usually was awarded after 60 combat missions. According to Ballantine Books' Illustrated History of the Violent Century (1973), Heydrich flew 97 missions in a Me-110 twin engine fighter.

There are some details in Ch. Bergström´s Barbarossa: the Air Battle. Seems that Heydrich was shot down either by St.Lt. Aleksandr Pokryshkin or Ml.Lt. Leonid Dyiachenko from 55 IAP who both claimed a Bf 109 in the combat. Pokryshkin and Diyachenko were flying as escort to some Su 2s whose mission was to bomb Dniestr Bridges at Yampol when a pair of Bf 109 attacked the bombers. Only one Messerschmitt was lost though and it was the one piloted by Heydrich who came down in a no man´s land and was later rescued as described by one of the posts above.

Diyachenko was to be killed just three days later , probably in combat with Uffz. Franz Schulte from II./JG 77 (his claim no.2) while Heydrich was assassinated by members of Czechoslovak exile army in May 1942. Pokryshkin went on to claim 59 aerial victories troughout WW2 and become one of the most notorious Soviet aces and 3 x HSU.

Against some sources Heydrich didn't served in France, wich would led in the immideate death of this Person. Hitler or Himmler wouldn't have allowed Heydrich to serve at the Kanalfront. They saw his Service with scepsis and after all he had to serve on places with less priority. Some Skins depict the I./JG 1 'White Chevron' to be in Service in France, the picture of Heydrich in his Emil bears the Emblem of the III. Gruppe in use before it was officially attached in 1943. The Emblem shows the Northern coast of Germany, the Region the unit had to defend.
This curiosity can lead to misinterpretation, the Emblem appears long before 1943, Heydrich died in Summer 1942.

There is no official or recorded evidence that Heydrich scored a kill.

Wangerooge is one of the 32 Frisian Islands in the North Sea located close to the coasts of the Netherlands, Germany and Denmark. It is also a municipality in the district of Friesland in Lower Saxony in Germany.
