Curtiss P-40M NEIAF 120Sqn C3-500 Pilot Maurenbrecher Merauke, Dutch New Guinea 1944

C3-500 was flown by squadron leader Major Maurenbrecher while operation from Merauke, Dutch New Guinea. The Dutch 120Sqn quarded the Torres Strait to prevent Japanese ships sailing from the Arafura sea to the Coral sea. They also had to intercept Japanese aircraft who intended to attack Merauke or were heading toward the Australian mainland.

Profile: Biak, New Guinea, July 1945. Among this plane's pilots was the squadron leader, major Maurenbrecher. The plane conducted the squadron's first tour of duty (May 1944 - February 1945) with success, conducting several fighter-bomber sweeps over Kaukenau and Timoeka. The plane was shot down by AAA on 1st of September 1945 with its pilot, sergeant Hirdes, while attacking the former base of 934th Kokutai in Manokwari. The 120th Squadron fought over Indonesia until this state declared independence at the end of 1948.
