Fairey Battle I RAF 142Sqn QTD L5502 RH Edwards crew shot down near Brussels July 29th 1940 01

Photo 01: The crew took-off from Binbrook on the 28th July 1940 at 2350 to bomb aerodromes in the Brussels area. They where later shot down by flak and crash landed in France. The crew all became POW's F/L R H Edwards, Sgt R W Cornwell and Sqt R E Hotchkiss. However F/L R H Edwards was later shot whilst trying to escape on Sep 26th 1942 from a prison camp near Poznam (possibly Stalag 21D). Unfortunatley he now rests in the Poznan Old Garrison Cemetery in Poland.

Ground crew use a combination of netting and frames of tree branches in an attempt to camouflage Fairey Battle, L4937, of No. 142 Squadron RAF on the snow-bound airfield at Berry-au-Bac.
