JG54.1 Hans Philipp 01-02
Photo 01-02: Hans Philipp first saw action during the Polish campaign, in which he scored his first victory. In August 1940, he was appointed Staffelkapitan of 4./JG54 and soon gained a reputation for being an exceptional fighter pilot with a passion for fighter versus fighter combat. He was awarded the Ritterkreuz on 22 October 1940 with 20 victories and later flew in Yugoslavia, but his victory tally really began to increase in Russia and by 24 August 1941 he had received the Oak Leaves for 62 victories. In February 1942, aged only 25, Philipp became Kommandeur of I./JG54 and was responsible for many young pilots who would themselves later become successful fighter pilots. On 12 March 1942, Philipp was awarded the Swords for his 86 victories and on 31 March became the fourth fighter pilot to reach 100 victories.

Profile 00: The personal aircraft of the Geschwaderkommodore, Hannes Trautloft. The Geschwaderstab of JG54 received it's Bf 109G-2's in July 1942 but it's not known when photos of this aircraft were taken. This aircraft has the same kind of head armour as used for the Bf 109G-1's pressurized cockpit. It also lacks the small intake below the windscreen. Trautloft's G-2 wears a three-color segmented camoflage in greens and brown. There are several theories about these colors. Speculation includes whether the colors used were mixed up in the field, captured Russian colors or field test versions of future RLM colors such as RLM81 and 82. For this profile I've used RLM70, RLM79 and the Russian AMT-4.

Messerschmitt Bf 109 G-2 Stab III./JG54 'Grunherz' White Chevron & Triangle flown by Gruppenkommandeur Hauptmann Reinhard Seiler late 1942

Photo's 01-02: Reinhard Seiler became Kommandeur of III./JG54 on 1 October 1941 and continued to command the Gruppe until 15 May 1943 when he became Kommandeur of the Geschwader's 1. Gruppe. This photograph shows an aircraft of III./JG54 which, when Seiler first took command, was equipped with the Bf 109 F-2. This was followed by the F-4 and, in August 1942, by the G-2 which it continued to employ until March 1943 when it received the G-4. The aircraft in this photograph, a Bf 109 G-2/R6 heavy fighter equipped with two underwing MG 151 cannon, is marked with the double chevron of a Kommandeur and was flown by Seiler himself. The member of the ground staff walking past the aircraft is well muffled against the cold, but as the machine shows no trace of an earlier snow camouflage, this suggests that it was photographed in late 1942.

Profile 0A: Messerschmitt Bf 109 G.2/R6 flown by the Kommandeur of III./JG54, late 1942. The green uppersurface scheme employed by several units on the Eastern Front consisted of two colours both of which were a blue-based rather than a brownish green as, for example, in the US Olive Drab. The darker of these Eastern Front greens appears to have been the most consistent and was similar to RLM 70 or perhaps slightly darker than RLM 71, whereas the second colour was more varied and seems to have ranged from a dark green, similar again to RLM 71, to a much lighter, brighter green. On this aircraft, the uppersurfaces have been finished largely in the lighter of the two greens with, in this case, patches of a much darker than usual green being confined to the rear fuselage and tail area. The undersurfaces were RLM 76, and an area of the original RLM 76 grey, mottled with 74 and 75, appeared around the swastika.

Photo 01-02: During the Summer of 1942, Lt. Walter Nowotny was involved in an air battle during which he shot down two Soviet fighters. However, his aircraft was hit by cannon fire which damaged the fuselage fuel tank and the area below the cockpit. With his Bf 109G-2 'Black 1' thus severely damaged, Nowotny flew home but his engine cut out while he was still approaching the airfield. The aircraft rapidly lost height and struck an airfield defense flak installation, overturned, and came to rest on its back. It took rescuers 20 minutes to release Nowotny from the cockpit.

Photo 01: Photographed in late 1942, the unit to which this snow-camouflaged Bf 109G-2 coded 'Yellow 8' belonged has not yet been firmly established for, although the badge below and ahead of the windscreen resembles that of I./JG51, that Gruppe had already begun converting to the Fw 190 when this photograph was taken. The shape and position of the freshly-painted white, heart-shaped area below the cockpit would seem to indicate that the 'Green Heart' badge of JG54 has been painted out and the style in which the yellow fuselage band has been applied is indeed usually associated with JG54. It is therefore thought that this aircraft possibly belonged to 3./JG54 and was photographed in the Leningrad area of the northern front during November-December 1942. Note, however, that the additional newly-painted white patches on the cowling and fuselage side suggest other overpainted unit emblems, perhaps indicating that the aircraft has already been passed on to another unit when JG54 itself began converting to the Fw-190 at the end of 1942. Although there were 23 victory bars painted on the rudder, the pilot has not yet been identified.

Some sources suggest that a light tan may have been used in combination with the greens and, despite the lightening effect of the bright sunlight, the pale tones over the nose and forward fuselage of this Bf 109G-2 of III. Gruppe would certainly seem to indicate that this was a distinct possibility.

Profile 00: This Bf109G-6 is equipped with two MG151 gondolas, one underneath each wing, and a tall tail was flown by 9./JG54 in the Reichsverteidigung (Home Defense) duties, based at Ludwigslust in February 1944. The yellow spinner and rudder was standard in 9./JG54 at the time as was the blue band of JG54. The Gruppe emblem was now worn within the green heart of JG54 which was also smaller than what the Gruppe used earlier in the east. The familiar 'Devil's Head' Staffelwappen (unit coat-of-arms or crest) was only used on some of the 9./JG54 109's though and is missing on this particular aircraft.

The Wrk.Nr. of this aircraft is not known, but judging by the camoflage pattern, it was built by Mtt Regensburg. The JG54 loss listing shows two 9./JG54 109G-6's with the tactical numeral Gelbe 9 or 'Yellow 9'. They were piloted by Gefr. Viktor Schittke (Wrk. Nr. 160639) and Fw. Werner Bercza (Wrk. Nr. 161193), but both aircraft were total 100% losses when the pilots were killed on 3/29/1944 and 4/8/1944, respectively. However, the tall tail wasn't introduced by Mtt Regensburg until the 163000 series of Wrk. Nr., so it is unlikely the machine in the profile matches the machines from the loss list.

Hans ‘Assi' Hahn

Major Hans 'Assi' Hahn was born on 14 April 1914 at Gotha in Thüringen. A gifted athlete, Hahn was selected to participate in the Summer Olympic Games in Berlin to compete in the Pentathlon. Unfortunately, he had to withdraw due to illness. Hahn enlisted in the army on 1 April 1934 as an officer candidate in the Infanterie-Regiment 14. He received promotion to the rank of Unteroffizier on 1 December. He attended the Kriegsschule at München from January to October 1935. On 1 October, Hahn was promoted to the rank of Oberfähnrich. In November, Hahn transferred from the infantry to the Luftwaffe. He underwent pilot training at Celle. On 1 April 1936, Hahn was promoted to the rank of Leutnant. Following pilot training, he was posted to 4./JG134, based at Werl near Dortmund, on 15 April. On 1 November 1937, Hahn was transferred to a new Jagdfliegerschule at Werneuchen as a flight instructor and Staffelführer of 1. Staffel. He received promotion to the rank of Oberleutnant on 1 February 1939 and was transferred to the Stabstaffel of I./JG3, based at Meseburg.

Oberleutnant Hahn transferred to JG2 on 11 October 1939. He was assigned to newly formed II./JG2, based at Zerbst, which was formed using the nucleus of personnel from I./JG3 and I./JG2. On 15 December, he was appointed Staffelkapitän of 4./JG2. Moving West, Hahn claimed his first two victories on 14 May 1940, during the Battle of France, over RAF Hurricane fighters in his first engagement with enemy aircraft. However, only one of his claims was confirmed. Hahn would claim a total of five confirmed victories during the Battle of France. Hahn was particularly successful during the Battle of Britain. He claimed three RAF Spitfire fighters shot down on 31 August 1940, to record his eighth through 10th victories. After claiming his 20th victory on 20 September 1940, Hahn was awarded the Ritterkreuz. On 29 October 1940, Hahn was promoted to the rank of Hauptmann and appointed Gruppenkommandeur of III./JG2.

By the end of 1940, his victory total had reached 22. Hauptmann Hahn was awarded the Eichenlaub (Nr 32) on 14 August 1941 for 41 victories. He recorded his 50th victory on 13 October 1941 and his 60th on 4 May 1942. Hahn shot down a RAF Spitfire fighter on 16 September 1942 to record his 66th, and last, victory over the Western front. Hahn was appointed Gruppenkommandeur of II./JG54 'Grünherz', based on the Eastern front, on 1 November 1942. In the space of three months, he claimed a further 42 victories. He shot down five Russian aircraft on 30 December (75-79). On 1 January, Hahn was promoted to the rank of Major. His best day occurred on 14 January 1943, when he downed seven Russian La-5 fighters (80-86). He recorded his 100th victory on 27 January 1943.

Hauptmann Hans 'Assi' Hahn, Gruppenkommandeur of III./JG2 in his Fw 109A-3 W.Nr. 223 '<<'. May 1942, Beaumont le Roger, France. Leading III./JG54 on 21 February 1943, Hahn encountered Russian fighters near Staraya Russa. In the ensuing combat, he shot down a Russian La-5 fighter for his 108th, and last, victory. In the course of the combat, his aircraft received hits in the left wing. Disengaging from further combat, Hahn headed west but his engine soon began overheating and he had to land his Bf 109 G-2/R6 (W.Nr. 13 949) 'Black <<' in enemy-held territory. Soviet sources claim Hahn was shot down by Russian ace Starshiiy Leytenant Pavel Grazhdanikov (13 victories, killed in action 5 April 1943) of 169 IAP, VVS. Hahn was captured and subsequently made a prisoner of war. Hahn was held captive and was not released by the Soviet Union until 1950. Hahn gained employment at the International Corporation of Bayer Leverkeusen, fulfilling a position dealing in trade with France and England. He later became a director of the Wano Schwarzpulver Company, which manufactured gunpowder, at Kunigunde near Goslar. He retired from this company in 1977 and lived in southern France with his family. Hahn died on 18 December 1982 at München from cancer.

'Assi' Hahn was credited with 108 victories in 560 missions. He recorded 66 victories over the Western Front, of them 53 were Spitfires. Of the 42 victories he recorded over the Eastern front at least seven were Il-2 Sturmovik ground-attack aircraft.

Hans Philipp

Hans Philipp was born on March 17, 1917 in Meissen in Saxony. As a member of I./JG76 (later to become II./JG54), Philipp saw action over Poland and scored his first victory. Later during the Battle of Britain, Hans Philipp was made the Staffelkapitan of 4./JG54.

Philipp soon gained a reputation for being a superb dogfighter, often preferring to battle it out with enemy fighters rather than bombers. Philipp's successes in combat were recognized on November 4, 1940 when he was awarded the Knights Cross for his twenty victories to date. In typical celebratory fashion, he claimed a Hurricane ten days later.

On March 26, 1941, Yugoslavia pronounced its defiance of Hitler and joined the Allied cause. Fearing offensive operations from Yugoslavian territory, Hitler issued Directive No. 25 - the subjugation of Yugoslavia and Greece. On the second day of attacks, April 7, 1941, the Grunherz Geschwader engaged the Jugoslovensko Kraljevsko Ratno Vazduhoplovstvo (JKRV) in a massive air battle. In daring attacks, the JKRV manned Me 109s attacked twenty-six Ju 87 Stuka dive-bombers, escorted by double that amount of fighters. During this dogfight, Hans Philipp managed to down two of the JKRV 109s.

Operation Barbarossa saw Philipp's score begin to climb. On August 24, 1941, Philipp became the 33rd member of the German Armed Forces to be awarded the Oak Leaves to the Knights Cross. On a sad note, Franz Eckerle, Kommandeur of I./JG54, was posted missing on February 14, 1942. The high scoring Hans Philipp was chosen as his successor. As Kommandeur of I./JG54, he oversaw the early careers of many young fighter pilots, among them Walter Nowotny.

March 1942 saw Philipp reach some incredible milestones. On March 12, 1942, he became the first member of JG54 to be awarded the Swords to the Knight Cross (8th overall). Even more remarkable, on March 31, 1942 Philipp became the fourth Luftwaffe fighter pilot to achieve 100 victories.

April 1, 1943 saw Philipp transferred to Defense of the Reich duties as Kommodore of JG1. There he battled the growing menace of the 8th Air Force and continued to score victories as his duties allowed.

The following is an excerpt (in italics) from Eric Mombeek's book 'Defending the Reich: The History of Jagdgeschwader 1 - Oesau' Reichmarshall Goring issued the following edict after an 8th AF raid on October 4, 1943:

There are no meterological conditions which would prevent fighters from taking off and engaging in combat. Every fighter pilot taking off in a machine not showing any sign of combat, or without having recorded a victory will be prosecured by a court-martial. In the case of where a pilot uses up his ammunition, or if his weapons are unusable, he should ram the enemy bomber. -

Kommodore Philipp's response: 'As far as I'm concerned, I categorically refuse to allow myself to be held to such advice; I know what I have to do!'

On October 8, 1943, the 8th AF dispatched 156 bombers to targets in Bremen and Vegesack. The force was escorted by 250+ Thunderbolts from six different fighter groups.

The Stab Flight of the Geschwader heard Philipp announce a victory over a Thunderbolt. The last tranmission from him was: 'Reinhardt, attack!' Feldwebel Reinhardt was Philipp's wingman on this day. He last saw the Kommodore's aircraft disappear in a cloud. Reinhardt was wounded after colliding with an enemy aircraft, but made a successful forced landing. Later that evening, the Geschwader learned that their Kommodore had been shot down and killed.

In the all too brief career of this dogfight artist, Philipp scored 206 victories over the course of 500+ missions

'We all feel that a powerful drama is unfolding. . .'

HANNES TRAUTLOFT,JG54

I arrive at the airfield at 02:30 while stars still shine in the dark skies. As a result of the cool night, dew covers the clover underfoot and my fur-lined flying boots are damp. The airfield is alive with activity.

In the parking. places, 45 engines are being warmed-up and create a monotonous roar as the chief mechanics rev them up. Bright, blue-yellow flames shoot from the exhaust stubs and the air is filled with a rare scent from the mixture of soil, flowers, grass, petrol and oi1.As the eastern skies are tinged with colour, there is the first chirping of birds and the shadows and darkness quickly disappear. Everyone on the airfield is aware that this is the dawn of a fateful day.

Shivering, we climb into our aircraft. The metal seat is cold and the harness is damp. The chief mechanic straps me in and wishes me luck as I close the canopy. The engine starts with a thunder. As always before a combat mission, my throat is dry and perhaps my heart is beating faster than normally. At 02.50 hrs we take off. The order is for all Geschwader of the I. Fliegerk01ps to cross the border at 03.00 and as we fly over it, the front comes alive. At 03.05, heavy artillery is brought into action and everywhere, all along the front, we see the muzzle flashes of the guns. It is a rousing scene, and at this moment the Eastern Front is born. From our vantage point we can see to the north across the Memel River, while to the south the Romintener Heath is visible. We all feel that a powerful drama is unfolding, that a door is being opened on a new phase of history, but one which will possibly be fateful for us all.

We fly in the direction of Kowno. The pilots fly nervously. I recognize this from the first operations of previous campaigns. It is due to anxiety, as so much is unknown: What will the Russians do? Will our surprise attack succeed? Will the Russian fighters engage in combat? Are their aircraft superior to ours? Before and below us on the dark ground is the city and airfield of Kowno, which can be identified only through its outline and contours. At this moment the sun rises above the eastern horizon, suddenly bringing glittering rays of light on our aircraft as we fly through the crystal-clear air of the dawn of a new day.

Our bombers attack the airfield at Kowno, the bombs landing in the middle of the parked aircraft. Suddenly, there are two fighters in front of us, but they disappear as quickly as they had appeared. There is no combat with them. We fly back. Numerous fires blaze along the entire front and thick black columns of smoke rise high in the sky.

The Russians wtre not prepared in any way for the first, surprise attack and most of their bases are attacked without any resistance. Soon, however, this situation changes and our bases at Gerlinden and Lindental report that they have spotted enemy bombers flying overhead. The alert squadrons take off to prevent the penetration of East Prussian airspace and, of the 26 SB 2 bombers which enter the area, 17 are shot down. Everywhere we see parachutes and burning, crashing aircraft. The other enemy aircraft flee in a wild panic but are followed all the way to Schaulen. We fly operations throughout the day, each pilot flying five to seven sorties. Our spines and backs ache. Escort for bombers, fighter sweeps, and low-level attacks are alternated. This afternoon we gained air superiority over our area. No Russian fighter dares to appear.

During a fighter sweep late that afternoon, we carry out a surprise attack on an enemy bomber formation which consists of 50-60 SB 2s. Unfortunately, because we are short of fuel we can only make two attacks. The first one is unsuccessful, but during the second, the right engine of the bomber in front of us is burning. The aircraft jettisons its bomb load but then explodes in the air. As we turn away, we encounter strong return fire from the tailgunners in the other bombers. The enemy formation flies south, but our fuel shortage compels us to return to base. We radio for reinforcements which intercept this formation and shoot down another 11 aircraft. One of our Me 109s has been hit and is unable to lower its landing gear. The pilot makes a careful and successful crash-landing. One hour later we take off for our next mission. One pilot loses his bearings during air combat but reports from Litzmannstadt in the late afternoon.

Toward dusk we fly one last mission in the direction of Schaulen but there is no contact with the enemy. We fly low over our ground troops who are half way to Kowno and Schaulen. Dense clouds of dust reveal the direction of the advance of each column, just as in Poland. There are fires everywhere; entire villages are in flames. Tauroggen is burning and produces a large column of black smoke which can be seen from far away. After the final mission, the successes of the day are reported to the Fliegerkorps. The Geschwader destroyed 45 aircraft in the air and 35 on the ground.
The strain of the day's fighting is very noticeable. We are all dog-tired and need rest, but this is a bad time for fighter pilots to sleep and we are unable to relax until the middle of the night. After just two hours, however, we have to prepare for the next day's operations.

'...there was no throttle!'

HANNES TRAUTLOFT, KOMMODORE OF JG54

During the Balkans campaign, the 'Green Hearts' Geschwader, then stationed at Belgrade-Semlin, was withdrawn from combat operations. Before our aircraft were passed on to another unit, the ground personnel did their best to bring them up to first-class condition and parked them around the edge of the airfield. Until they took delivery of new aircraft, the 'Green Hearts' therefore led a peaceful existence and each person used his free time in his own way. For the pilots, this involved some high-performance Yugoslav gliders which they had found in a hangar and had made ready to f1y.Thus, every Friday, while the war raged elsewhere, such famous glider pilots as Wolfgang Spate, Franz Eckerle, and 'Hubs' Miltherich performed their masterly aerobatics displays over the Semlin air base. These so impressed me that I decided I wanted to take part so, one Friday, 'Hubs' Miltherich gave me the necessary instruction, a Go-145 tow-plane was coupled up to the glider, and off I went.

At first everything proceeded smoothly. Then, at a height of 1, 000 metres, as I banked the glider into a turn, I saw below me a Do-17 which had carried out an emergency landing in one of the tributaries of. the River Danube which ran close to the airfield. Fascinated, and purely out of habit, I rolled the glider upside down to take a better look at the crash-landed Dornier. This cost me a considerable loss in height, but 1 was so engrossed that it was only as I automatically reached for the throttle that I realised that I, the experienced fighter pilot, was not seated in my Bf 109 and that there was no throttle!

Struggling to return to the airfield in a shallow glide, I saw before me, as if forming a barrier, the proud lines of Bf109s which the ground personnel had so carefully serviced. The whole Geschwader was watching and a collision seemed inevitable, but I pushed the stick forward and hoped for the best. The nose dropped and the glider picked up a little speed, but I was still heading straight towards the parked Bf109s. I hauled back on the stick and the glider staggered to a height of three metres, rose over the parked aircraft - and stalled.

The glider fell like a stone. There was a loud crash as it broke apart, losing its canopy and wings. I sat in the wreckage surprised but uninjured until one of the workshop foremen arrived and, anxious to be helpful, set about freeing me from the smashed remains. However, he clearly had not recognised me as the Geschwader Kommodore, for as he pulled away the splintered wood and torn fabric, I heard him dryly remark, 'I should have known! Bloody Friday again!'

Hannes Trautloft was born on 3 March 1912 at Gro?-Obringen near Weimar in Thuringen. On 1 April 1931 he joined the Deutsche Verkehrfliegerschule at Schlei?heim and learned to fly. In 1932 he spent four months at the secret training base in Lipezk, Russia. He returned to Germany to serve in the army until 1934 when he was transferred to Jagdfliegerschule Schlei?heim as a Leutnant.

Trautloft was one of six pilots that sailed aboard the Ursaramo arriving at Cadiz, Spain on 7 August 1936 to support Franco's Nationalists in the Spanish Civil War. Initially flying He 51 biplane fighters Trautloft and Kraft Eberhardt (seven victories, killed in action 13 November 1936) recorded the first German victories in Spain by each claiming a Breguet XIX shot down on 25 August 1936. On 30 August, Trautloft claimed a Potez 540 for his second victory but became the first German pilot shot down over Spain. He baled out and landed near Nationalist forces and returned unharmed. In December 1936, four prototype Bf 109s were delivered to counter the Russian SB twin-engine bombers and the I-15 and I-16 fighters supporting the Spanish Republican forces. Trautloft went on to record three more confirmed victories flying the Bf 109 for a total of five victories in Spain. Perhaps more importantly, Trautloft was responsible for developing tactics for the deployment of the Bf109 in service. He was awarded the Spanienkreuz in Gold mit Schwertern for his service in Spain. On his return to Germany, Trautloft served with different units, including winning the international roundthe-alps air race in Switzerland as part of the "Dreier-Patrouille" flying Bf 109s, before being appointed Staffelkapitan of 12./JG132 on 1 July 1938. 12./JG132 was redesignated 2./JG331 on 1 November 1938. At the outbreak of World War 2, Trautloft was serving with 2./JG77.

He participated in the Polish campaign. He gained his first victory in the new conflict when he shot down a Polish PZL P.23 attack aircraft near Warta. Trautloft was promoted to the rank of Hauptmann and became Gruppenkommandeur of I./JG20 on 19 September 1939. He gained two victories with the unit during the French campaign. I./JG20 was to be redesignated III./JG51 on 4 July 1940. The Battle of Britain saw Trautloft record two further victories to raise his victory total to five in World War 2 and 10 overall. On 25 August 1940, Trautloft was appointed Kommodore of the newly formed JG54, a post he would hold until July 5, 1943. He led the Jagdgeschwader during the remainder of the Battle of Britain. Trautloft flew 120 missions over the Channel before JG54 was relocated to Germany for rest and refit. He recorded three further victories over England to raise his overall victory total to 13.

Trautloft and JG54 participated in the Balkans campaign and Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of Russia. Major Trautloft was awarded the Ritterkreuz on 27 July 1941 for achieving 20 victories and outstanding leadership. By the end of 1941 he had recorded 26 victories. He recorded 19 victories in 1942, including his 30th victory on 16 March, his 40th on 9 May and his 50th on 15 February 1943. On 6 July 1943, Trautloft was appointed Inspizient Ost with the General der Jagflieger's office. He was appointed Inspekteur der Tagjager on 27 November. Trautloft's involvement in the so-called "Mutiny of the Fighter Pilots" in 1945 led to his removal and subsequent posting to 4 Flieger-SchulDivision based at Strassburg. He ended the war with this unit based at Doberitz-Elsgrund. Post-war, Trautloft joined the Bundesluftwaffe on 1 October 1957 with the rank of Brigadegeneral. During the 1960's, Trautloft served as the Inspector General of the Bundesluftwaffe. He retired on 30 June 1970 with the rank of Generalleutnant. Trautloft was active in many veterans' organizations until his death on 11 January 1995 at Bad Wiessee near Munchen.

Hannes Trautloft was credited with 58 victories in 560 missions. He recorded 45 victories over the Eastern front. Included in his total are five victories recorded during the Spanish Civil War.

Hannes Trautloft

Quite simply, Hannes Trautloft is the father of the Grunherzgeschwader. Many historians consider Trautloft as one of the Luftwaffe's most effective leaders and should be mentioned in the same breath with Molders, Galland and Lutzow.

Trautloft was born March 3, 1912 in Grossobringen in the Thuringen area of Germany.

In April 1932, he entered the Deutsche Verkehrfliegerschule - German Air Transport School and a few months later was sent to the secret training base in Lipezk, Russia. Lipezk is located 310 miles south-east of Moscow and is the result of an agreement between Germany and Russia. In exchange for technical assistance to the new and developing Russian Air Force, the Germans were allowed a clandestine flight school and test centre. The secrecy surrounding the Lipezk centre was necessary given that Germany was forbidden, by the Treaty of Versailles, to develop a miliary air arm.

When Germany decided to secretly aid to General Franco of Nationalist Spain, Hannes Trautloft was one of six pilots aboard the Ursaramo. The pilots arrived at Cadiz, Spain on August 7, 1936. Also onboard were six crated He-51 biplane fighters. After the Spanish pilots had difficulty with the biplane, the German pilots soon took over the flying duties.

Trautloft and Kraft Eberhardt scored the first German victories in Spain by each claiming a Breguet XIX on August 25, 1936. Then on August 30, he claimed a Potez 540 for his second victory. Unfortunately, during this combat Trautloft became the first German pilot shot down over Spain. Lucikly, he parachuted near Nationalist forces and returned unharmed

The Soviet Union became active in supporting the Spanish Republican forces by sending SB bombers and the quick and agile I-15 and I-16 fighters. The He-51 could not match the new opponents in the air and the cry soon went out for better fighters to be sent to Spain. Eventually, four prototype Bf 109s were delivered in December 1936. Trautloft was one of the first pilots to test fly the new monowing fighter from Messerschmitt. Wanting to show some individuality, Trautloft had the green heart emblem of his homeland, Thuringen, applied to the V3 prototype.

The young Trautloft went on to score three more confirmed victories (Nieuport 52, Potez 540 and I-16) for a total of five in Spain.

During the Polish campaign, Trautloft was Staffelkaptain of 2./JG77. He was subsequently promoted to Hauptmann and became Gruppenkommanduere of III./JG51 on September 19, 1939.

The fates of Hannes Trautloft and JG54 converged in August of 1940. Late in August, it became apparent that Adler Tag, 'Eagle Day', had failed to win the air superiority promised by Reichsmarschall Hermann Goering. Ever ready to deflect the blame from his failed strategy, the Reichmarschall pointed to his fighter pilots' lack of aggressiveness. Several of the older Kommodoren were replaced by younger, more 'aggressive' types. JG26 was blessed with Adolf Galland at its new Kommodore. JG54 also experienced good fortune with the arrival of its new Kommodore, Hannes Trautloft on August 25, 1940, a post he would hold until July 5, 1943.

Under the leadership of its new Kommodore, JG54 became one of two Jagdgeschwader most requested by bomber crews for escort duties during the remainder of the Battle of Britain; the other being Adolf Galland's JG26.

Hannes Trautloft himself flew over the Channel no less than 120 times before JG54 was rotated to the rear for rest and refit.

Along with all but two Jagdgeschwader, Trautloft and JG54 participated in Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of Russia. He was awarded the Ritterkreuz, Knights Cross, on June 27, 1941, for achieving 20 victories and outstanding leadership.

On December 4, 1941, Trautloft made the decision that all geschwader aircraft had to wear the 'green heart' emblem. He decided on a green heart with a narrow white outline. First seen in Spain, this badge was a tribute to Thuringen, 'the Green Heart of Germany', where Trautloft had spent his childhood. Henceforth, JG54 became known as the Geschwader Trautloft and would win immortality on the steppes of Russia.

Trautloft went on to score 25 more victories, until he was designated Jagdflieger Inspektor Ost - Inspector of Fighers East. The honor was tainted by the sad realization that the man who welded JG54 into the fighting unit it had become was leaving.

Trautloft's involvement in the Mutiny of Fighters in 1945 led to his removal as Inspector of Fighters and subsequent posting to 4 Fliegerschule Division, which he held until war's end. During the 1960's, Trautloft served as the Inspector General of the reborn German Air Force. In addition, he was active in many verterans organization until his passing in 1995.

In all, Hannes Trautloft flew 560 combat missions, scoring 57 victories, 45 of them in the east.

Walter 'Nowi' Nowotny

Walter 'Nowi' Nowotny was born on 7 December 1920 at Ceske Velenice/Gmünd on the Czechoslovakian/Austrian border. He joined the Luftwaffe on 1 October 1939. His flying training was completed at Jagfliegerschule 5 at Schwechat, near Vienna. Nowotny was posted to JG54 on 23 February 1941. Leutnant Nowotny was assigned to 9./JG54. His first four weeks with the unit were served with the Stabsschwarm of Ergänzungsgruppe/JG54. He claimed his first victories over Ösel Island on 19 July, when he shot down two Russian I-153 biplane fighters. However, he was, in turn, shot down in Bf 109E-7 (W.Nr. 1137) 'White 2' by an I-153, flown by the future Russian ace Alexandr Avdeev (13 victories, killed in action 12 August 1942) of 153 IAP, VVS, over Riga Bay in this engagement. After three days and nights at sea in a rubber dinghy, Nowotny finally reached the shore. He recorded his 10th victory on 13 September.

On 11march 1942, Nowotny transferred to 3./JG54. He shot down five Russian fighters on 20 July. On 2 August 1942, Nowotny claimed seven enemy aircraft shot down to record his 48th through 54th victories. On 11 August, he shot down two RussianmiG-3 fighters. His Bf109G-2 (W.Nr. 10360) was hit in the engagement and caught fire. Nowotny was able to bring the burning aircraft back to his base for a crash-landing, although he did suffer some injuries. Leutnant Nowotny was awarded the Ritterkreuz on 4 September for 56 victories. Nowotny, was appointed Staffelkapitän of 1./JG54 on 25 October 1942. He recorded his 75th victory on 20march 1943. On 26march 1943, Nowotnymet the first Russian flown Spitfire fighters, operated by the 26 GvIAP of the Leningrad Air Defence, and shot down one of them for his 79th victory. In June, he shot down 41 enemy aircraft, including five on 1 June (84-88), six on 8 June (93-98), his 100th victory on 15 June, six on 21 June (109-114) and 10 on 24 June (115-124). On 10 August 1943, Nowotny was appointed Gruppenkommandeur of I./JG54. He recorded 49 Soviet planes shot down in August 1943, including nine on 13 August (129–137), six on 18 August (146-151) and seven on the 21 August (155-161).

His prolific scoring continued in September when he shot down 45 enemy aircraft during themonth. On 1 September 1943, he shot down ten enemy aircraft (174-183); five in the space of 12minutes during amorning sortie and another five in nineminutes at noon. He shot down six enemy aircraft the next day (184-189). On 4 September, Oberleutnant Nowotny was awarded the Eichenlaub (Nr 293) for 189 victories. He shot down five enemy aircraft on 8 September, including his 200th victory. On 14 and 15 September, he claimed six enemy aircraft on each day to raise his victory total to 215. Hauptmann Nowotny was awarded the Schwertern (Nr 37) on 22 September for 218 victories. During his last ten days on the Eastern Front, ending on 14 October 1943, Nowotny shot down 32 Russian aircraft, including eight on 9 October (224-231) and six on 13 (239-244) and 14 October (245-250). Nowotny was the first pilot in history to pass 250 victories and was now the top-scoring fighter ace of the Luftwaffe. On 19 October, he became the eighth recipient of the Brillanten. The Nazi propagandamachine turned Nowotny into a 'superstar' of the Luftwaffe. He had received the highestmilitary awards available: Ritterkreuzmit Eichenlaub, Schwertern und Brillanten and was withdrawn from combat activity by the High Command. During the followingmonths, hismain role was to perform propaganda andmoral-boosting duties before, on 1 April 1944, Hauptmann Nowotny was appointed Kommodore of JG101, an operational fighter-training unit, based at Pau in France.

In September 1944,major Nowotny was put in charge of Kommando Nowotny, equipped with theme 262 jet fighter. The unit consolidated a number of test units and was tasked with acquiring tactical knowledge and experience ofme 262 operations. The unit was based on two airfields northwest of Osnabrück: Achmer and Hesepe. Nowotny was besieged with difficulties in operationally testing the jet fighter. In addition to staving off the increasing Allied fighter presence the jets attracted, he was also beset with the technical difficulties a new and immature technology presented. By 7 November 1944, Nowotny had claimed three victories in the new jet fighter. Nowotny took off on 8 November 1944, flying against USAAF bombers with a fighter escort. The exact circumstances of Nowotny's death remain uncertain. Ground personnel reported hearing combat above the clouds. Nowotny reported he had downed a B-24 four-engine bomber and probably destroyed a P-51 fighter. He then reported an engine failure beforemaking a garbled transmission referring to 'burning' over the radio. Hisme 262A-1a (W.Nr. 110400) 'White 8' was seen to dive vertically out of the clouds and crash at Epe, 2.5 kilometres east of Hesepe. Rudolf Klemm was born on 10 February 1918 at Haltingen in the Lorrach region of Baden. He joined the Luftwaffe in 1937. Following several years as a flying instructor, Klemm was transferred to JG54, based on the Eastern front, in December 1941. Oberfeldwebel Klemm was assigned to 8./JG54. He gained his first victory on 7 February 1942. Klemm claimed a further victory on 4 April, which was also the 2,000th victory recorded by JG54. He claimed 10 victories in September, including five Russian fighters shot down on 29 September to record his eighth through 12th victories. When III./JG54 was relocated to the Western front, Klemm had 23 victories to his credit. In March 1943, Klemm was promoted to officer rank and was transferred to 9./JG54. On 17 April, he claimed his first fourengine bomber shot down: a USAAF B-17 15km southwest of Ahlhorn.

On 14 May, he claimed his 25th victory but then his Bf 109 G-4 (W.Nr. 16 144) "Yellow 10" was hit by German flak and he was wounded, blinding him in one eye. Despite this handicap, Klemm returned to combat duty some weeks later. In November 1943, Klemm transferred to the Stabsstaffel of III./JG54. On 1 February 1944, Klemm was appointed Staffelkapitan of 7./JG54. He had accumulated 27 victories at this time. He recorded his 32nd victory on 8 April. On 9 April he was shot down and wounded in Bf 109 G-6 (W.Nr. 15 573) "White 1" by escorting USAAF P-47 fighters. Subsequently, two toes had to be amputated. Klemm was transferred to IV./JG54 based on the Eastern front in summer 1944. Hauptmann Klemm was awarded the Ritterkreuz on 18 November for 39 victories. On 1 December, Klemm was appointed Gruppenkommandeur of IV./JG54.

He led the Gruppe until its dissolution in February 1945. On 15 February 1945, Klemm was appointed Gruppenkommandeur of III./JG54 based on the Western front under the control of JG26. He replaced Hauptmann Robert "Bazi" Wei? (121 victories, RK-EL) who Aces of the Luftwaffe - Rudolf Klemm had been shot down and killed on 29 December 1944. III./JG54 was redesignated IV./JG26 on 25 February and was based at Varrelbusch. On 19 March 1945, he claimed his 42nd, and last, victory when he shot down a USAAF P-51 fighter 10km northwest of Nordhorn. Klemm received orders to report to JG7 on 17 April 1945. He was destined never to reach the unit before the end of the war. Rudolf Klemm was credited with 42 victories in 293 missions. He recorded 13 victories over the Western front, including 8 four-engine bombers.

In April 1940, Ostermann was transferred to JG21. Leutnant Ostermann was assigned to 1./JG21. On 20 May 1940, he achieved his first aerial victory during the French campaign when he shot down a French Morane 406 fighter near Péronne. He recorded a second victory during the French campaign. On 6 June, 1./JG21 was redesignated 7./JG54. During the Battle of Britain, Ostermann did well recording six victories. Ostermann participated in the invasion of the Balkans. On 6 April 1941, he claimed a Yugoslavian Bf-109E fighter shot down over Belgrade. Following the successful conclusion of the Balkans campaign, JG54 and Ostermann then saw much action against the Russians over the Leningrad front. He was awarded the Ritterkreuz on 4 September 1941 for 29 victories. In November 1941, Ostermann transferred to I./JG54.

By Spring 1942, he had shot down 40 Soviet aircraft. He recorded his 50th victory on 20 January 1942, his 60th on 1 February and 70th on 20 March. In February 1942, Oberleutnant Ostermann was appointed Staffelkapitän of 8./JG54. He was awarded the Eichenlaub (Nr 81) on 12 March. On 31 March, he claimed his 79th and 80th victories and his 89th and 90th on 29 April. Ostermann recorded his 97th victory on 10 May, but was shot down shortly afterward surviving unharmed. On 12 May he became the seventh pilot in World War 2 to achieve 100 victories, although he was shot down in Bf 109F-4 (W.Nr 13125) (Black 1) on that occasion suffering wounds in the process. He was awarded the Schwertern on 17 May.

Ostermann was afforded leave following the award and did not return to combat duty until August. On 9 August 1942, Ostermann, flying Bf-109G-2 (W.Nr. 10438) (Black 1), shot down a Russian Curtiss P-40 fighter for his 102nd, and last, victory, but shortly after was shot down and killed in a dogfight with Soviet fighter pilots in the vicinity of Amossovo.

Max-Hellmuth Ostermann shot down 102 enemy aircraft in over 300 combat missions. He recorded eight victories over the Western front.
