Messerschmitt Bf 109 E-1 4./JG 52 (W2+) Fw. Paul Boche crash-landed WNr 3465 Essex Oct. 8, 1940 00

Messerschmitt Bf 109E.1 of 4./JG52 flown by Fw. Paul Boche Finished in a 70/71 upper finish, the fuselage sides and fin of this aircraft were heavily mottled in 02 and 71 with the 71 predominating. The engine cowling was yellow and the spinner was black-green with one quarter painted white. The aircraft was fitted with the earlier style of canopy and a rear view mirror was fixed to the windscreen frame. The 4. Staffel crest of a red cat superimposed on a large white disc was carried only on the starboard fuselage side and the aircraft number '2' was boldly applied in white without any border.

Messerschmitt Bf 109E 4./JG 52 (W2+) Fw. Paul Boche crash-landed Essex Oct. 8, 1940 01-02

Photo's 01-03: During a freie Jagd patrol on the morning of 8 October, 4./JG52 was attacked from behind by Spitfires of 603Sqn. This Bf 109E-1, 'White 2' flown by Fw. Paul Boche, the Staffel's Technical NCO, fell victim to P/O R. Berry of 603Sqn. Boche's aircraft was hit in the radiator and the engine overheated and failed. At 09.30hrs Boche made a forced landing at Little Grange Farm, Hazeleigh near Maldon, Essex, during which the aircraft struck a haystack and broke its back.

Messerschmitt Bf 109 E-1 4./JG 52 (W2+) Gefr. Erich Mummert WNr 3417 crash-landed England 1940 00

Profile 00: Messerschmitt Bf 109E-1 of 4./JG52 flown by Gefr. Erich Mummert This aircraft forced landed on Detling aerodrome during the afternoon of 30 September. Originally finished in a mid-demarcation 70/71 upper scheme, the sides of the fuselage and fin were overs prayed with a dense 70/71 mottle. The cowling and rudder were yellow and the 4. Staffel 'Red Cat' emblem was carried on the starboard side of the fuselage only. The black-green spinner had a one-quarter segment painted white. The white '2' was of a squared style without any border, but the previous aircraft number of '8' was clearly visible beneath it. On the rear fuselage, were what appeared to be the letters' JV' of an overpainted Stammkennzeichen, but these were more likely due to the mottle pattern.

Messerschmitt Bf 109E 4./JG 52 (W2+) Gefr. Erich Mummert WNr 3417 crash-landed England 1940 01-02

Photo's 01-02: JG52 lost two more pilots during a bomber escort mission on 30 September, one being Gefr. Erich Mummert from 4. Staffel. Six aircraft from this Staffel were attacked by Spitfires and although the Bf 109 pilots tried to form a defensive circle, their fuel situation soon compelled them to make for home. Almost immediately the Spitfires pounced and in the ensuing melee Mummert's Bf 109 was mistaken for a Spitfire and attacked by another Bf 109 which hit the radiator. When the engine temperature rose, Mummert realised he could not reach home and, missing one airfield, made a wheels-up landing on the edge of Detling aerodrome where he was taken prisoner by members of a resident Avro Anson squadron. These photographs show Mummert's aircraft after being raised to its undercarriage.

Profile 00: Messerschmitt Bf 109E.4, 'White 5' of 4./JG52, late 1940 early 1941. Displaying a generally clean appearance, 'White 5' was finished in a high-demarcation 02/71 scheme with the 71 extended to the leading edge of the fin and light, random 02 mottling. The JG52 winged sword emblem was carried beneath the windscreen and was accompanied by the red cat emblem of 4. Staffel. The spinner was Green 70 and the cowling and rudder have received the familiar yellow finish of the late Battle of Britain period.

Photo 01: Aircraft of 4./JG52 displaying the Geschwader emblem and the red cat badge of 4.Staffel. The sword and shield emblem of JG52 was introduced at the end of 1940 or early 1941 by the Kommodore, Major Hanns Trubenbach, in honour of his predecesssor, Major Hubertus Merhart von Bernegg, who came from Boblingen in Wurtemberg and which had as its crest the same red and black shield. Because of the superimposed winged sword, the Geschwader was sometimes known as the 'Schwert' or 'Sword' Geschwader. The pilot shown in both photographs below is Uffz. Walter Kohne.

Messerschmitt Bf 109E-1 of 5./ JG52 belonging to Uffz. Leo Zaunbracher 'Red 14', the Bf 109E-1 of Uffz. Leo Zaunbracher of 2./JG52 was forced to land in a field near Lewes after being damaged in combat by P/O J. McLintock of RAF 615 Sqn. during the early afternoon of 12 August 1940. It carried a high demarcation upper camouflage of RLM 02/71 and the red painted 2.Staffel 'Little Devil' emblem superimposed on a white disc was painted on the port cowling only. The aircraft was also fitted with a rear view mirror mounted on the windscreen framing. Although shown in this profile with a red forward section, it is understood that some eye-witness reports stated that the spinner was red. However, whether these reports referred to the entire spinner or just the tip is not known for certain.

Profile 00: Wearing a 70/71 upper camouflage scheme, the fuselage sides appear to have been repainted in 65 and then mottled over with the upper colors but with the Hakenkreuz masked off to leave a surrounding square of 65. The entire cowling is yellow, as is the rudder and tip of the spinner. Although still fitted with an early canopy, the aircraft had both pilot armour and a rear view mirror added. The striking 6./JG52 emblem almost four feet in length was carried on both sides of the cowling and was dark blue with white details.

Messerschmitt Bf 109E-1 6./JG52 (Y2+) landing accident Calais Sep1940 01

Photo 01: In Luftwaffe slang, an accident such as this, probably as a result of the pilot applying the brakes too hard, was referred to as a 'Fliegerdenkmal'; a pilot's monument. The Bf 109E-1-1 here is 'Yellow 2' of 6./JG52, photographed at Calais in September 1940.

Messerschmitt Bf 109E1 6./JG 52, Husum, Germany, 1940

The camouflage scheme of the illustrated Yellow '2' underwent some interesting changes in an attempt to adapt to the combat requirements from the Polish campaign to the Battle of Britain. The original upper surface scheme consisting of RLM 70/71 (as in Scheme B) was oversprayed with the lower color of RLM 65 along the side of the fuselage in a fashion similar to the scheme corresponding to the winter/spring 1940 period (as in Schemes A and C). In an effort to counter this effect to some extent, an overspray the fuselage sides by the upper colors appeared in an irregular pattern. The use of RLM 02 cannot be ruled out in this application. The aircraft carries the almost obligatory yellow cowl and rudder used on the Bf 109s during the Battle of Britain, and indicates that this practice was not just the domain of JG 26. The effective eagle emblem was a marking of 6. Staffel/JG 52.

Staffel/JG 52.

Me109G-2 'Black Double Chevron' of Stab II./JG52. This plane was flown by Gruppenkommandeur Hauptmann Johannes 'Macki' Steinhoff (176 victories, Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords) from Tuzov, a frontline airfield near the Don Bend in Southern Russia in late August and early September 1942.

Steinhoff later commanded JG77 in the Mediterranean, rose to command the Me-262 equipped JG7 and was also participated in the 'fighter pilot's revolt' against Goring in 1945. After being relieved of his post as Geschwaderkommodore he went to Galland's JV44 and was badly wounded in a take-off accident on April 16 1945 which left him badly disfigured for the rest of his life.

Steinhoff joined the post-war Bundesluftwaffe and rose through its ranks, eventually leading the NATO council for several years. He was awarded the German Great Cross of Merit, the US Legion of Honor and the Commander's Cross of the French Legion d'Honneur for his services to Western Germany and the NATO. Steinhoff passed away in 1994. Today the German Jagdgeschwader 73 is carrying the traditional name 'Steinhoff'.
