Profile 00: Messerschmitt Bf 109E1 flown by Fw. Herbert Bischoff, 1./JG52. 'White 9', the Bf 109E-1 of Fw. Bischoff of the Coquelles-based 1./JG52 was forced to land at Westgate as a result of combat damage during the mid-afternoon of . This aircraft was fitted with an early style canopy, but featured pilot's back armour and a rear-view mirror. Finished in a 70/71 upper camouflage scheme, the sides of the fuselage, fin and rudder carried a heavy mottle believed to have been in the uppersurface colours. The light coloured square on both sides of the fin behind the swastikas suggests that they had been masked off while the mottling was applied. The I./JG52 'Running Boar' emblem was applied to both sides of the cowling and the spinner was painted half white and half black or 70.

Photo 01: This Bf 109E-1 'White 9' of I./JG52 forced landed in a field near Westgate-on-Sea during the mid-afternoon of 24 August. The pilot, Fw. Herbert Bischoff, had been flying as part of a formation of fighters carrying out what he described as an 'aggressive patrol'. While flying at 18,000 feet near London, he was surprised from behind by fighters which damaged his engine and radiator. When his engine seized, Fw. Bischoff forced landed in a cornfield and although part of his port wing was torn off when his aircraft hit an electricity pylon, he was captured uninjured.

Profile 00: Messerschmitt Bf 109E-4 of 1./JG52 flown by Fw. Heinz Uerlings. The Bf 109E-4 'White 12', flown by Fw. Heinz Uerlings of 1./JG52, took off at 17.00 hrs on 2 September on a freelance patrol. When over England, this aircraft developed engine trouble and Fw. Urlings had already decided to land when he was attacked by a Hurricane. Urlings made a good forced landing at a point two miles north-east of Sturry, near Canterbury at 17.40 hrs. Finished in a high demarcation 02/71 upper splinter scheme, the sides of the fuselage, fin and rudder carried randomly applied mottling in these colors. The tips of the wings and tail planes were painted white, as was the aft section of the rudder. The spinner was painted half white and half black or black-green 70, and the 'Running Boar' emblem of I. Gruppe was carried on both sides of the cowling.

Profile 00: Messerschmitt Bf 109E.3 flown by Oblt. Helmut Bennemann of 1./JG52. The Bf 109E-3 'Black 5' flown by Oblt. Helmut Bennemann of 1./JG52 finished in an upper camouflage scheme of 02/7:1.. The sides of the fuselage were mottled with what is believed to be 02 and the yellow paint of the cowling has been extended rearwards to the base of the windscreen and as far down as the top of the wing root fairing. The I. Gruppe 'Running Boar' emblem which was carried on both sides of the cowling appears either to have been masked off very carefully or re-applied over the yellow paint. Reminiscent of the markings of 111./ JG26, the fuselage Balkenkreuz and aircraft number are slightly smaller than generally seen during this period.

Photo 01: 'Black 5' of I./JG52 at Calais during mid-August, with Oblt. Helmut Bennemann on the wing and members of his ground crew. Although this aircraft is fitted with the earlier style of canopy, the pilot's back and head armour is of the type usually associated with the later, heavier framed canopy. A rear-view mirror is fitted to the windscreen framework, though not all pilots favored this refinement as they found the view limited and they were tempted to look around less.

The fine, fibrous filling of these life-jackets was quite solid and made a bulky item of equipment in the narrow confines of the Bf 109's cockpit. Nevertheless, this item was preferred to the later inflatable life-jacket, which pilots feared could be too easily punctured in combat.

Messerschmitt Bf 109E3 2./JG 52 (Red 9+) shot down France 1940

Photo 01: Could this be the one? On 23 April 1940 thirteen French H-75 A of GC II/5 escorted a Potez 63 and were attacked by twelve Me-109 which were escorting a Do-17 of 1.(H)/13 East of Metz. During the dogfights S/Sgt. Klan damaged a Me-109 of 2./JG 52 which had to, due to an error by the pilot, emergency land with a 20 % damage near Eisweiler ('near St. Wendel'). It came burning from the direction of Namborn and crash landed near the bank of the railway line Saarbrücken - Türkismühle next to a residence. The pilot is said to have been cut out of his aircraft. After the opening of the inner German border (after 1989) he is said to have been in Eisweiler again, coming from the Dresden area, to say thank you to Paul Langendörfer who saved him, but who had already died. The former flier’s name is said to have been König.

Messerschmitt Bf 109E 3./JG 52 Yellow 5 France 1940

For a short time following the conclusion of the campaign in the West, the name of Oblt. Paul Gutbrod was carried by aircraft of II./JG52. Gutbrod, who was a member of the Stab II./JG52, was killed on 1 June 1940 and was honored in recognition of the fact that he opened the Gruppe's victory tally. In common with several other Bf 109s, this machine carries a diagonal yellow line from the rear of the cockpit to the trailing edge of the wing. The significance of this is not known.

Messerschmitt Bf 109E-3 3./JG 52 (Y15+) Karl Wolff crash-landed France Aug 30 1940

Profile 0A-0B: Messerschmitt Bf 109E-3 of 3./JG52, flown by Uffz. Karl Wolff 'Yellow 15' was finished in a high demarcation 02/71 upper scheme with 71 mottling on fuselage sides and, as with many other Bf 109s of the period, the undersurface 65 wrapped around the wing leading edges. The rudder, cowlings and the tips of the tail-planes and main wings were painted white with the spinner painted half-white and half green 70. The I./JG52 'Running Boar' emblem was carried on both sides of the cowling and the aircraft had been fitted with an early style canopy with head armor and a rear-view mirror.

Messerschmitt Bf 109E-3 3./JG 52 (Y15+) Karl Wolff crash-landed France Aug 30 1940 01-02

Photo's 01-03: On 30 August, Uffz. Karl Wolff crashed in 'Yellow 15', subject of the color profile and seen in this series of photographs prior to being removed for repair. Exactly one month later, on 30 September, 3./JG52 carried out a freie Jagd sweep to London but was intercepted by defending fighters. During the dog-fight which ensued, Uffz. Wolff was wounded in the leg and had to bale out when the engine of his 'Yellow 14' cut out and he lost control during violent evasive maneuvers. Aircraft and pilot came down in Sussex, the aircraft crashing at Clayton Farm, peasmarsh, Sussex while Wolff landed at Udimore.

Messerschmitt Bf 109E Uffz. Karl Wolff, 3./JG 52, Pihen/Calais, France, August 1940

A very attractive scheme was carried by Bf 109E-3 White '15', with which Uffz. Karl Wolff crashed on landing on August 30, 1940. It carried the standard scheme of RLM 02/71/65, and the light blue 65 extended up the fuselage sides. The light blue, which also wrapped around the leading edges of the wings, was subdued with overspray of colors used on the upper surfaces. Furthermore, the aircraft received white paint on surfaces such as the nose, rudder and wingtips, used first and foremost as quick identification features. The I. Gruppe JG 52 unit emblem appeared on the nose of the plane. A month after his hard landing in White '15', Uffz. Wolff was shot down and taken prisoner. Jagdgeschwader 52 became the Luftwaffe's most successful fighter unit mainly due to its operations over the Eastern Front. However, its successes began during the Battle of France, and later, the Battle of Britain. By the end of 1940, the unit's pilots had already racked up 177 kills. On the other hand, losses were quite high as well. Just during the Battle of Britain, the unit lost 53 pilots. The unit was also odd in that its equipment over the course of the war was composed exclusively of Bf 109s.

Luftwaffe pilot Johannes 'Macki' Steinhoff

Me109G-2 'Black Double Chevron' of Stab II./JG52. This plane was flown by Gruppenkommandeur Hauptmann Johannes 'Macki' Steinhoff (176 victories, Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords) from Tuzov, a frontline airfield near the Don Bend in Southern Russia in late August and early September 1942.

Steinhoff later commanded JG77 in the Mediterranean, rose to command the Me-262 equipped JG7 and was also participated in the 'fighter pilot's revolt' against Goring in 1945. After being relieved of his post as Geschwaderkommodore he went to Galland's JV44 and was badly wounded in a take-off accident on April 16 1945 which left him badly disfigured for the rest of his life.

Steinhoff joined the post-war Bundesluftwaffe and rose through its ranks, eventually leading the NATO council for several years. He was awarded the German Great Cross of Merit, the US Legion of Honor and the Commander's Cross of the French Legion d'Honneur for his services to Western Germany and the NATO. Steinhoff passed away in 1994. Today the German Jagdgeschwader 73 is carrying the traditional name 'Steinhoff'.

Luftwaffe pilot Helmut Bennemann

Helmut Bennemann was born on 16 March 1915 at Wanne-Eickel. In June 1940, Bennemann was serving as Adjutant to I./JG52. He gained his first victory on 26 August, when he shot down a RAF Spitfire fighter near Dover. On 15 September, Bennemann shot down three RAF Hurricane fighters to record his sixth through eighth victories. On 27 April 1941, he was appointed Staffelkapitän of 3./JG52. When I./JG52 was transferred to the Eastern front in September 1941, Bennemann had recorded 12 victories. On 14 June 1942, Bennemann was appointed Gruppenkommandeur of I./JG52. On 3 September, he claimed two Russian aircraft shot down (50-51). Hauptmann Bennemann was awarded the Ritterkreuz on 2 October for 52 victories. On 28 December, Bennemann shot down six Russian aircraft to record (67-72). Bennemann was wounded in the explosion of an incendiary bomb on 10 May 1943 resulting in his withdrawal from combat duty for some months. He had 88 victories to his credit at this time. Bennemann was appointed Kommodore of JG53 on 9 November 1943, replacing Oberst Günther von Maltzahn (68 victories, RK-EL) who left JG53 to fulfill a staff role. On 25 April 1944, he shot down a USAAF B-24 four-engine bomber over Bologna to record his 90th victory.

However, his Bf 109G-6 (W.Nr. 163314) Black < 3 was hit by return fire and Bennemann was wounded. He baled out successfully. In June 1944, Bennemann led the Geschwaderstab of JG53 on a short sojourn to the Eastern front, to direct the supply missions for the relief of the city of Vilna. The unit departed Russia for WunstoRG near Hanover in Germany on 22 July. From August 1944, Bennemann led JG53 on Reichsverteidigung duties, initially from bases in France, then from bases in Germany. He recorded three victories in October 1944 to bring his final victory total to 93. Helmut Bennemann was credited with 93 victories in over 400 missions. He recorded 77 victories over the Eastern front. Included in his total are at least 10 Il-2 Sturmoviks.

Luftwaffe pilot WOLFGANG EWALD. JG52

Aircrew Luftwaffe pilot 3./JG 52 Wolfgang Ewald '. .. we saw several small black speck's...

I was born in Hamburg on 26 March, 1911, and obtained my pilot's licence in 1929. In 1934, I enlisted in the German Army as I wanted a career as a pilot. After military training I was posted to the Jagdfliegerschule in Schleissheim and then I had to attend various courses in Dresden in order to become an officer.

In 1937, I joined the Legion Condor and was posted to the 2.J88 as a Leutnant. I claimed one victory before I was sent back to Germany and, soon afterwards, to Austria. Then I was posted to join the newly created I./JG433 in Ingolstadt-Manching. Our Gruppenkommandeur was Hptm. Grafvon Pfeil und Klein-Ellguth. I took over the 2. Staffel and for a little while Obit. Adolf Galland was Staffelkapitiin of the 1. Staffel and Lt. Alfons Klein had the 3. Staffel.

On 1 May 1939, the I. Gruppe was redesignated and became I./JG52. On 21 November 1939, the Kommandeur was severely burned during an aerial battle with a French Curtiss. By that time, Galland and Klein had been posted elsewhere and, as I was then the oldest Staffelkapitiin, I took over the Gruppe on a temporary basis until relieved by the replacement Gruppenkommandeur; Hptm. von Eschwege.

The Gruppe's peRGormance during the campaign in the West was disappointing and we only had one claim. On 18 July, we were sent back to Neumppin in the Reich to provide cover during an important meeting in Berlin. Later, on 21 July, we were sent to cover the Richard Wagner Festival in Bayreuth so we did not return to the Channel coast until 3 August 1940.

We were based at Calais-Coquelles, and on 16 August we took off at 18.38 hrs to escort a bomber formation which was to attack the British airfield at Manston. We were flying about 1,000 meters beneath the clouds and as we approached the target we saw several small black specks flying towards the airfield. These were almost certainly British aircraft returning to land and I ordered my pilots to reduce speed and approach in line astern, as if we too were British fighters about to land. This ruse worked and we were able to approach the airfield without any trouble. Once we had flown to within a few hundred meters of the strip, I ordered my pilots to open fire and we succeeded in destroying several Spitfires which were dispersed around the airfield and two more which had just landed. One was set on fire and the other veered off to the side of the runway and formed a 'Flieger Denkmal'. We also fired at the airfield AA defences and silenced them. When we left, we could count five Blenheims and two Spitfires in flames, and we had also blown up an important fuel tank.

We returned to this same airfield two days later during a bomber escort mission over Kent. I had been informed by radio that a Spitfire squadron had just landed so I first ordered the 3. Staffel to cover my 2. Staffel, which would attack. However, once I was certain that there were no Spitfires in the air either near the airfield or towards the coast, I also released the covering 3. Staffel and both the 2. and the 3. began the attack. Once we had silenced the AA defences, we were free to attack the aircraft on the ground and we destroyed ten Spitfires and three Blenheims*.

*RAF… they destroyed a Hurricane from 17Sqn, two Spitfires and severely damaged another six Spitfires before making good their escape. RAF groundcrews, servicing the aircraft in the open, suffered one man killed and 15 injured...

Photo 01: Wolfgang Ewald was appointed Kommandeur of I/JG52 on 28 August 1940 and, in 1942, he took command of III/JG3. He was awarded the Ritterkreuz on 9 December 1942, and on 14 July 1943 he was shot down by Russian AA fire and captured. He did not return to Germany until December 1949 and died on 24 February 1995.

Wolfgang Ewald

Wolfgang Ewald (26 March 1911 – 24 February 1995) was a German Luftwaffe ace and recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross during World War II. The Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross was awarded to recognise extreme battlefield bravery or successful military leadership.

One of the most enduring actions Ewald took part in was a strafing attack on RAF Manston during the Battle of Britain. The attack took place on 18 August 1940, known as The Hardest Day. Three fighters were destroyed, and six were damaged in the attack. Wolfgang Ewald was shot down by Soviet flak in July 1943 during the Battle of Kursk. He was taken prisoner and was held until 1949. During his career was credited with 78 aerial victories, 1 in the Spanish Civil War, 1 on the Western Front and 76 on the Eastern Front.
