Messerschmitt Bf 109E4 1./JG3 (W6+) Heinz Schnabel crash-landed Kent

Profile 00: Bf 109E-4 of 1./JG3 flown by Lt. Heinz Schnabel. This aircraft, 'White 6', was finished in an 02/71 upper splinter scheme with the fuselage and fin sides lightly mottled in 02. The tips of the main wings and rudder were painted white as was the tip and one half of the spinner. The white Tatzelwurm Staffel emblem was thinly outlined in black and had a red tongue. Two red painted Abschuss bars were carried on the top of the rudder recording victories scored by the previous pilot of this aircraft.

Messerschmitt Bf 109E 1./JG3 (W6+) Schnabel crash-landed Kent 01-03

Photo's 01-03: At 08.40 hrs on 5 September, Lt. Heinz Schnabel took off to escort Do-17 bombers attacking Croydon. On the return flight, Spitfires and a Hurricane split Schnabel's aircraft off from its formation and damaged the engine, resulting in a forced landing in a field at Handen Farm near Aldington, Kent, at 10.10 hrs. One of the first tasks to be carried out on forced landed enemy aircraft was to render the guns safe and, in these photographs, soldiers of the Somerset Light Infantry remove the 7.9 mm ammunition from the MG 17 ammunition tanks of Schnabel's 'White 6' before the aircraft is inspected by a shepherd and his flock of sheep. Just visible is part of the white Tatzelwurm emblem of I./JG3, while the white painted tip of the port wing has been covered with earth to make it less visible from the air. This aircraft had two victory stripes on the tail but these, according to Schnabel, were scored by the previous pilot.

After capture, Heinz Schnabel was taken to the Handen farmhouse where the farmer's daughter repaired the torn sleeve of Schnabel's uniform as he explained to her mother the meaning of the white Tatzelwurm on his aircraft. At that time, Schnabel was not very fit as he was still recovering from a severe chest wound sustained during the French campaign, and first spent some time in hospital before being sent to the POW camp at Grisedale. Interestingly, Heinz Schnabel almost escaped from captivity in 1941 when he and Oblt. Harry Wappler, a former He-111 pilot from KG27, successfully stole a Miles Magister trainer from RAF Kingsnorth. Eventually becoming lost and running out of fuel, they forced landed the Magister near Great Yarmouth and were subsequently recaptured and ultimately sent to Canada for the duration of the war.

Messerschmitt Bf 109E 2./JG 3 (Black 6+) Uffz. Keller Colombert, France August 1940 01

Photo 01: Demonstrating a weakness that plagued the Bf 109 in all its variants, the undercarriage of Uffz. Keller's 'Black 6' of 2./JG3 has collapsed while taxiing on a rough section of the landing ground at Colombert. The application of a light color, possibly the underside 65, can be seen along the leading edge of the wing and apart from the fuselage number, the aircraft is almost identical to Ofw. Lampskemper's 'Black 8' shown in the color profile.

Messerschmitt Bf 109 E-4 3./JG2 (Black 8+) Ofw. Bernhard Lampskemper WNr 5338 France Aug 1940 00

Profile 00: Messerschmitt Bf 109 E-4 of 2./JG3 flown by Ofw. Bernhard Lampskemper. 'Black 8', the Bf 109E-4 W.Nr. 5338 flown by Ofw. Bernhard Lampskemper of 2./JG3. On , this aircraft took off on a mid-afternoon freelance patrol and, with this aircraft flying some distance ahead of the other machines of the Staffel, had just crossed the English coast at a height of 22,000 feet, when it was attacked by Spitfires. The engine seized and Lampskemper glided down to a smooth crash-landing near the RDF station at Pevensey, barely damaging the aircraft and being captured unhurt despite being shot at from the ground by Bofors guns which badly damaged the undersurfaces when he had descended to 300 feet. The aircraft, Item 5 in A.I.1.(g) Crashed Enemy Aircraft Report No. 15 dated , was described as having olive green on the uppersurfaces, but was probably finished in an 02/71 scheme and, as with other JG3 aircraft of the period, the Blue 65 fuselage and fin sides would have carried a light mottling of 02 and 71. The wingtips, rudder and cowling were painted yellow, the latter extending back to the windscreen as shown in the profile. The spinner was painted half white and half 70, with the extreme tip finished in red. The Staffel Tatzelwurm emblem appeared on both sides of the cowling on a rectangular background of the original mottled finish, and was red with a thin black outline and yellow tongue.

Photo's 01-02: Scenes at 2./JG3's dispersal at Colombert in late October as aircraft start their engines for the next mission. Engine cowlings are yellow and spinner caps and fairings over the tailwheel openings have recently been fitted. The last two letters 'LH' of the Stammkenzeichen are visible on the rear fuselage of 'Black 9' and, on the aircraft shown below, the entire fin, rudder and a section of the rear fuselage has been painted yellow.

Profile 00: Oblt. Helmut Tiedmann's Bf 109E-4 'Black 13' of 2./JG3 which forced landed near Leeds Castle, Kent, during the early afternoon of 18 August. Finished in a 02/71 upper scheme, the sides of the fuselage carried a mottle of 02 which was applied less densely on the sides of the cowling towards the nose. The Tatzelwurm emblem was finished in the Staffel color of red with a yellow tongue, and the top segment of the rudder and the tips of the wings and tail planes were painted yellow. The forward section of the spinner was painted red with a thin white spiral.

Photo's 01-02: Two views showing the Bf 109E-4 W.Nr 1990, 'Black 13' of the Staffelkapitan of 2./JG3 Oblt. Helmut Tiedmann after it was damaged in combat with RAF fighters and forced landed near Maidstone, Kent on 18 August 1940. Tiedmann, who escaped injury, managed to avoid capture for 12 hours before finally giving himself up. Although the RAF Intelligence Report on this aircraft states the spinner was red with white concentric bands, this is only partly correct as the red spinner was painted instead with a white spiral, as seen here. The aircraft has been partially camouflaged with bundles of corn to prevent any Luftwaffe attempt to destroy it before it may be examined.

Messerschmitt Bf 109E-3 3./JG3 (Yellow 4+) Helmut Rau belly-landed WNr 1082 Shoeburyness England 0A-0B

Profile 00: Messerschmitt Bf 109E3 flown by Oblt. Helmut Rau, Staffelkapitan of 3./JG3. Only some six weeks old when it forced landed on the sands at Shoeburyness on the evening of 31 August, Bf 109E-3 Werk Nummer 1082, 'Yellow 4', was flown by Obit. Helmut Rau, the Staffelkapihin of 3./JG3. Despite hazy weather conditions which made the prospect of a successful operation extremely doubtful, Oblt. Rau was nevertheless ordered to take part in a freie Jagd patrol to London, a city Rau knew well, having worked in a bank there before the war. After taking off at 16.30 hrs, the patrol was flying in two formations, each of eight aircraft, at 30,000 feet when they were attacked from the rear by British aircraft. As Oblt. Rau tried to climb higher in order to avoid the danger, he saw that his wingman had been shot down. Rau then dived to observe his falling wingman's aircraft and was himself hit, probably by a Spitfire of 603Sqn flown by P/0 'Rasp' Berry. This aircraft then made a forced landing on the beach at Shoeburyness. Finished in an 02/71 upper pattern the sides of the fuselage were lightly mottled with what is believed to have been 71. The fuselage Balkenkreuz were of slightly smaller proportions than usually seen on JG3 aircraft and the spinner was painted half white and half black or black-green 70 with the tip in the Staffel color of yellow. The Tatzelwurm emblem, applied to the port side only of the cowling, was yellow with a thin black outline. Three black Abschuss bars were carried on the fin above the aircraft Werk Nummer representing two Curtiss fighters destroyed on 14.5.40 and one Morane on 30.5.40.

Messerschmitt Bf 109E3 3./JG3 (Yellow 7+) Uffz. Heinz Grabow crash-landed Kent

Profile 00: Messerschmitt Bf 109E.3 flown by Uffz. Heinz Grabow, 3./JG3. The Bf 109E-3 'Yellow 7' of Uffz. Heinz Grabow of 3./JG3. On 5 September, the pilot of this aircraft took off from an airfield near Boulogne and, while acting as escort for ten Do 17s, had just made an orbit above the bombers when he was attacked by a British fighter. The engine was hit and Grabow, who had only been with his Geschwader for three weeks, made a forced landing. The aircraft was finished in a high demarcation 70/71 splinter scheme with a heavy mottle of what is believed to have been 02 and 71 on the fuselage sides with the uppersurfaces of the wings and tail planes also appearing to have a similar finish. The rudder, the tips of the main wings and one half of the spinner were painted white, the latter with a yellow tip. The white Tatzelwurm emblem was applied to both sides of the cowling and was thinly outlined in black with a red tongue. Aft of the Balkenkreuz and only carried on the starboard side was a white saltire on a small black disc, possibly indicating some association with 1.(J)/LG2, or a former connection with the Legion Condor.

Messerschmitt Bf 109 E-3 3./JG3 (Yellow 7+) Uffz. Heinz Grabow WNr 750 crash-landed Kent Sep 5, 1940 01

Photo's 01-02: Damaged during an escort mission on the morning of 5 September, Uffz. Heinz Grabow of 3./JG3 was forced to land his Bf 109E-3 at Wichling in Kent. Having been captured in reasonable condition, his aircraft was sent to Australia where it was displayed to aid recruiting for the Royal Australian Air Force. Although this aircraft had temporary white paint applied to the wing tips and rudder when it was shot down, as these photographs show, this had either worn off by the time the machine was exhibited in Australia or, as with many other aircraft used for display purposes, a replacement rudder from another aircraft has been fitted.

Photo 01: At the start of 'Barbarossa', Major Gunther Lutzow, since 21 August 1940 the Kommodore of JG3, had already been credited with 18 victories and had been awarded the Ritterkreuz on 18 September 1940. On 20 July 1941, Lutzow received the Oak Leaves in recognition of his 40th victory but, on the same day, he had already increased his score by claiming his 41st and 42nd victories. Here, Lutzow is seen (left) with his Adjutant, Oblt. Rudolf von Mentzingen, who had claimed his second victory on 1 August but who was later killed near Novaya Greblya, approximately 50 km NW of Kiev, on 10 August.

Pilots JG3 Wilhelm Balthasar Sep 1940 01

Photo 01: On 1 September, Hptm. Wilhelm Balthasar became Kommandeur of III./JG3. Three days later, on 4 September, the Gruppe took off to escort bombers to Canterbury but before reaching the target, became involved in an air battle over England with 222Sqn. In this action, Balthasar achieved his 24th Abschuss but, in the same combat, his aircraft received hits in the cockpit area and he was wounded in the leg. Nevertheless, Balthasar managed to fly back to his base where he made a perfect landing. Fifteen days later, although still not fully recovered, hence the need for the walking-stick in this photograph - Balthasar rejoined his unit and claimed five more victories including two Spitfires on 23 September and two more on 29 October. Only in November did he return to hospital to give his wounds the opportunity to heal.

Wilhelm Balthasar, Gruppenkommandeur of III./JG3 in September 1940, and is marked with a total of 41 Abschussbalken, of which twenty-seven represent air-to-air victories, the twenty-seventh being claimed on 27 September 1940, the same day that the GruppenAdjutant of III./JG3, Hptm. Herbert Eggers, also scored the Gruppe's 100th victory. Balthasar had previously been Staffelkapitan of 7./JG27 and when he was given command of III./JG3 on 28 August, he brought his aircraft, with him.

Luftwaffe pilot Major Wilhelm Balthasar

Major Wilhelm Balthasar was born on 2 February 1914 at Fulda in Hessen. He served in an Artillery Regiment from 1933 but transferred as a Leutnant to the Luftwaffe in 1935. In November 1936, Balthasar joined the Condor Legion serving with the Aufklärerkette of Kampfgruppe K/88. He gained his first victory of the Spanish Civil War when, while on a reconnaisance mission, he shot down a Republican I-16 on 20 January 1937. On 15 March 1937, he joined Aufklärungsgruppe A/88 flying He 112s. He joined Jagdgruppe J/88 in September 1937. He gained a futher six victories with this unit including four SB-2 bombers shot down in one mission on 7 February 1938. He returned to Germany on 23 March 1938. In the 17 months he served in Spain, Balthasar had flown 465 combat missions. He was awarded the Spanienkreuz in Gold mit Schwertern und Brillanten in recognition of his feats there.

At the beginning of World War 2, Balthasar was Staffelkapitän of 1./JG1 and participated in the invasion of Poland. With the Blitzkreig of the low-countries and France, Balthasar was soon making his mark shooting down three Belgian Gladiator biplane fighters and a French Morane fighter on 11 May 1940. He claimed five French victims on 5 June, to record his 20th
through 24th victories, and claimed a further four on 6 June (25-28).

On 14 June, Hauptmann Balthasar was awarded the Ritterkreuz, only the second fighter pilot, behind Werner Mölders (115 victories, RK-Br, killed in flying accident 22 November 1941), to be so rewarded. In addition, he claimed 13 aircraft destroyed on the ground. He was considered the most successful German fighter pilot of the French campaign. On 5 July, 1./JG1 was renamed 7./JG27. On 1 September 1940, Balthasar was appointed Gruppenkommandeur of III./JG3. On 4 September, he was seriously wounded in leg over Canterbury in England in aerial combat with Spitfire fighters from 222 Squadron RAF. Despite the severity of his wounds, Balthasar was flying operationally 14 days later. On 23 September he shot down two Spitfires with only 88 bullets from cannons and MG`s. He claimed a further three victories before having to submit to hospital treatment for his wounds in November.

Major Balthasar was appointed Kommodore of JG2 on 16 February 1941. Between 22 June and 27 June, he shot down nine enemy aircraft, including five RAF Blenheim twin-engine bombers on 23 June (32-40). He was awarded the Eichenlaub (Nr 17) for 40 victories on 2 July. On 3 July 1941, Balthasar killed in aerial combat with RAF fighters near Aire, France. When Baltasar attempted to disengage from combat in Bf 109 F-4 (W.Nr. 7066) by diving, a wing of his aircraft folded and he crashed to his death southeast of St Omer. He was posthumously promoted to the rank of Major and buried in a World War 1 cemetary in Flanders alongside his father, who had fallen in the earlier conflict. Wilhelm Balthasar was credited with 47 victories. In 1939-41 he flew about 300 combat missions. Seven of his victories were recorded during the Spanish Civil War.
