SQUADRON HISTORY
829 Squadron has had two previous incarnations but is most closely associated with being at the forefront of frigate and destroyer embarked naval aviation. The Squadron first existed from 1940 to 1944. In this brief but intensive period the Squadron was awarded 5 battle honours that included a successful attack on the battleship Tirpitz in April 1944.
The Squadron began its long association with ships' flights when it was re-commissioned in 1964 embarking Whirlwind, Wessex, Wasp and Lynx helicopters. The Squadron saw service across the globe and served in the Falklands and Kuwait with distinction.
829 Squadron re-commissioned in 2004 and continues the tradition of embarked front-line maritime aviation by providing Merlin flights to Type 23 "Duke Class" frigates as part of the Royal Navy's commitment to a Versatile Maritime Force.
