The Largest Stone alms bowl
by
Shwe Man Maung

o The Second Buddha Pajaniya of Loka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni Buddha Marble Image enshrined on the Minidhamma Hill in Insein Township, Yangon was ceremonially held on the morning of 16, February 2003. Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council Senior-General Than Shwe, wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing, Vice-Chairman of the State Peace and Development Council, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Commander-in-Chief (Army) Vice-Senior General Maung Aye and wife Daw Mya Mya San, Secretary 1 of the State Peace and Development Council General Khin Nyunt and wife Dr. Daw Khin Win Shwe, Members of the State Peace and Development Council, Ministers and, Deputy Ministers attended the ceremony. After performing religious rites and presenting offertories to the invited monks, Senior-General Than Shwe and wife Daw Kyaing Kyaing offered the largest stone alms bowl to the largest stone Buddha Image “Loka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni” by presenting a replica of it to the Image.

o The Largest stone alms bowl was carved out of a monolithic Sagyin marble, the same type of stone as that of the great Image Loka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni. The donor is the same donors of the great Image U Taw Taw, the stone sculptor of Mandalay.

o The Sagyin marble alms bowl measures 9 feet 10 inches high, 10 feet in diameter and the circumference is 5 feet 8 inches. Its stand is 4 feet 2 inches. The total weight is over 30 tons. This marvelous largest marble alms bowl was named Maha Atula Patta Nilar meaning Great, incomparable marble alms bowl of sapphire colour. The colour and texture of this marble alms bowl are excellent and flawless and perfectly matching the qualities of Loka Chantha Abhaya Labha Muni marble Image. This monolithic was also discovered in the marble mines of U Taw Taw who has again religiously inspired to carve it into an alms bowl for the Image.

o Alms bowl is one of the eight requisites of the Buddha as well as of a Buddhist monk. The eight requisites are three pieces of the yellow robe, the girdle, the needle, the axe, the water strainer and the alms bowl. The lord Buddha prsscrbed rules regarding the size, type, shape and colour of alms bowl as well as the way to use and up keep it.

o There are some references in Buddhist Literature regarding the alms bowl which the Buddha used in his life time. On the fulmoon day of Wazo(July) four Loka Pala devas (Satu maharit) donated four alms bowls to the Buddha. These alms bowls were hewn out of sapphire. The Buddha refused to accept them because they were made of precious stone of rich hue and it was not in conformity with the rules of Vinaya to accept them. The four Lokapala devas then donated four stone alms bowls of dark brown colour which the Buddha accepted. The Buddha put the four alms bowls, one on top of the other and pressed them down to become one bowl. This bowl had four rings on the lip indicating that it was a combination of four alms bowls, each inside the other. The Buddha used this bowl until his Mahapariniverna (demise).

o For the monks to receive alms food the Buddha prescribed that only bowls made of clay or iron were to be used for containing alms food.

o There were three types of bowl - the small size to contain alms food(cooked rice) and a carry about, the middle size to contain alms food as well as some minor in terms of (offertories) and Large size with the capacity of containing rice cooked out of 3 pyis of paddy.

o There are big alms bowls of different materials found at the temples and pagodas of renown in Myanmar, such as big alms bowl at Manuha Temple, some big alms bowls of stone as well as cement in the precincts of Shwezigon Pagoda and Ananda Temple at Bagan and Kuthodaw Pagoda, Aindawya Pagoda and Kyauk Taw Gyi Temple at Mandalay. There is a large cooked rice container in square shape like a box made of teak wood with fine lacquer coating in a Zayat (rest house) in the compound of Shwe Kyi Myin Temple at Mandalay.

o Maha Atula Pattanilar alms bowl of Sagin marble is by far the largest of its kind.

Yangon City Heritage List

The Yangon City Heritage List is a list of man-made landmarks in Yangon, Myanmar, so designated by the city government, Yangon City Development Committee. The list consists of 188 structures (as of 2001), and is largely made up of mostly religious structures and British colonial era buildings. The list is presented by the township in which the structures are located. In 2010, the Ministry of Culture further announced that 16 ancient pagodas in Yangon Division are recognized as cultural heritage sites, effective 10 February 2010. The Shwedagon Pagoda is recognized as both an Ancient Monument Zone and Protected and Preserved Zone. The other 15 are listed as Ancient Monument Zone.

Myanmar's Presivation List

GRAND state office buildings, richly decorated pagodas and elegant diplomatic missions are among nearly 200 buildings regarded by the Yangon City Development Committee as being worthy of preservation because of their heritage value. The buildings are identified on a list which includes the nation’s most revered religious site, the Shwedagon Pagoda. Other religious buildings cited for their heritage value include monasteries, mosques, temples and churches. According to criteria set by the YCDC, buildings on the list must be of architectural significance, more than 50 years old and not under private ownership. As reported in Myanmar Times (‘Preservation a priority: YCDC,’ page 1, Vol 4, No 75), the list resulted from a survey conducted in 1996. Heritage buildings can be renovated, subject to the YCDC’s approval and as long as their original design and appearance are not changed. The materials used in the renovations must not detract from the building’s appearance, said U Tin Maung Oo, the assistant head of the YCDC’s engineering department

(building). Any heritage buildings which are damaged are repaired as soon as possible. U Tin Maung Oo said repair work began immediately last year after the porch collapsed at the Myanma Railways headquarters at the corner of Bogyoke Aung San Street and Sule Pagoda Road. The list is published below. In some cases the names of buildings have changed since the list was compiled.
