Grumman F6F-5 Hellcat VF-29 'White 14' and operated CVL-28 USS Cabot 1944

This Hellcat, as well as others in this kit, wears the typical late-war naval camouflage scheme of overall Gloss Sea Blue. The white symbols on the fin and ailerons identify this aircraft as being from the Cabot (CVL-28). These markings, the so-called 'G-symbols', were sprayed on the aircraft using templates, often not very carefully. The Cabot took part in the war against Japan till March, 1945 when she was sent to the States for overhaul. She survived a Kamikaze attack on November 25th, 1944 and lost 62 men, killed or injured. Carrier Air Group 29 flew from Cabot´s deck from October 1944 to April 1945.

Bílé symboly na svislé ocasní ploše a køidélkách oznaèovaly pøíslušnost letadel k CVL-28 Cabot. Toto oznaèení, tzv. G-symbols bylo na letouny støíkáno dle šablon, mnohdy pomìrnì nedbale. Lehká letadlová loï Cabot (CVL-28) se podílela na bojích proti Japonsku až do bøezna 1945, kdy byla odeslána do Státù ke generální opravì. Pøestála též zásah kamikaze dne 25. listopadu 1944, který zranil èi zabil 62 mužù osádky. Letecká skupina 29 pùsobila z její paluby od øíjna 1944 do dubna 1945.

VF-29 ("Fighting Falcons")

Established and Disestablished:
VF-29 was established on May 1, 1944, at Naval Air Station Atlantic City, New Jersey, and disestablished on January 8, 1946, after World War II ended.

Aircraft and Carrier:
The squadron flew Grumman F6F-5 Hellcats and was part of Carrier Air Group 29, operating from the light carrier USS Cabot (CVL-28).

Formation and Training:
Formed in 1944, VF-29 trained on the East Coast with Hellcats, a fighter with a 2,000-hp engine and six .50-caliber guns, preparing for carrier-based combat in the Pacific.

Deployment and Combat:
VF-29 deployed in October 1944 aboard USS Cabot, joining Task Force 38. They fought in the Philippines, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa campaigns, targeting Japanese aircraft, ships, and ground positions.

Philippines Campaign:
In October-November 1944, during the Leyte Gulf operations, VF-29 flew strikes and air cover, helping repel attacks on the fleet, including on October 25, 1944.

Iwo Jima and Okinawa:
In February-March 1945, they supported the Iwo Jima invasion with bombing and strafing. From April-June 1945, VF-29 excelled at Okinawa, facing kamikazes and flying extensive missions.

Combat Record:
VF-29 downed 51 enemy aircraft in the air and destroyed 35 on the ground, totaling 86 kills. They likely flew 600-800 sorties as part of CVG-29’s 2,000+ missions from Cabot.

Notable Pilots:
Lt. (jg) William E. McVey became an ace with 5+ kills at Okinawa. Ens. Robert L. Buchanan scored 4-5 kills, possibly reaching ace status. Several pilots likely had 3-5 victories.

USS Cabot Context:
Cabot, a light carrier, earned 9 battle stars and a Presidential Unit Citation. VF-29 worked alongside VB-29 and VT-29 in a cohesive air group.

Post-War:
After Japan’s surrender in August 1945, VF-29 returned to the U.S. and was disestablished in January 1946 at NAS Alameda, California, without a post-war revival.

  F6F-5 "White 7" Bu Number Unknown, Flown by Ensign Robert E Murray, VF-29 USS Cabot April 1945. Lt(jg) R E Murray was VF-29's 'Top Gun' with 10.33 confirmed kills, the unit producing a further 11 aces. Operating against Japan, VF-29 claimed 113 victories, including 34 off Formosa on 16 October 1944-Murray claimed four on this day to achieve ace status. Aside from carrying 12 flags, denoting that both Murrays shared 'Betty" claim and a damaged Zeke had also been included in the tall, 15 bombing mission symbols have been painted as well on the side of 'Lucky 7' Blank and No marking too.
