Photo 01: Hellcat IIs of 896Sqn, presumably aboard the escort carrier HMS Empress in late July 1945. The nearest aircraft JX878, 'B8B', hit the barrier on landing on 21st of that month. All the aircraft are finished in Temperate Sea Scheme camouflage with East Indies Fleet markings

Photo 01: F6F-5P Hellcats of 896 Sqn aboard HMS Empress, two wearing Temperate Sea Scheme and the other Sea Blue finishes. The newer aircraft have curtailed identification bands and White-outlined 'Small' roundels. You can make out aircraft C8-R C8-F/E and C8-C.

Photo 01: The placing of the wing bands on Hellcats was occasionally adjusted to avoid overlap of the national markings, as can be seen all some of these, including F6F-5 P aircraft, of 896 Sqn aboard Empress in July 1945

Photo 01: This Temperate Sea Scheme-finished Hellcat MkII JX725, B8D, of 896Sqn gives a very clear view of the freshly applied identification bands and East Indies Fleet roundels. The picture has, however, anomalies. The tail bands do not cover the elevators, in similar fashion to RAF and IAF aircraft. Additionally, although the squadron identification symbol, 'B8' is that of 896Sqn, allocated to HMS Empress in June 1945, and Ameer for strikes on the Nicobar Islands (Operation 'Collie') during July, the plainly visible deck letter, 'A', is that of HMS Attacker. It could be that despite the fuselage markings the aircraft is in use by another squadron or there was a degree of cross-decking following the cancellation (11 August) of the only operation involving all three carriers.
