Focke-Wulf Fw 190D-9, W.Nr. 600424, Lt. Heinz Sachsenberg, Munich - Riem airport, Germany, April - May 1945

Lt. Heinz Sachsenberg (104 victories) was the Co of Platzschutzschwarm. The aircraft assigned to Sachsenberg carried the inscription 'Verkaaft's mei Gwand, I foahr in himmel', which is a Bavarian proverb 'sell my shroud, I am leaving for Heaven' The font was Schwab, which was popular at the time. Sachsenberg, holder of the Knight's Cross, came from an aviation family. His uncle Gotthard flew in the First World War and shot down 31 aircraft, and was awarded the Pour le Merite. Heinz's brother, also named Gotthard, flew a night fighter with NJG 3. He shot down two British bombers and fell on March 8th, 1943. The aircraft was found at the end of the war at Munich - Riem, where it remained after the departure of JV 44 to Austria at the end of April, 1945.

Skin for Focke Wulf FW190D-9 by Claes Sundin

Jagdverband 44 Fw 190D-9 Red 1 Flown by Leutnant Heinz Sachsenberg, JV 44, Munchen-Riem/Germany, late April 1945. Led by Generalleutnant Adolf Galland, the Me 262-equipped JV 44 was formed in February 1945. These jey fighters were superior to anything the Allied could launch into the air, but their weakest spot was to be attacked by hostile fighters when they took off or landed. The pioneer jet fighter unit Kommando Nowotny had been provided with airbase cover by the Fw 190 D-9s of III./JG 54, and Galland could use the influence that he still had to get a handful of Fw 190 D-9s and D-11s assigned to JV 44. On April 23, 1945, JV 44 reported a sterngth of twelve Me 262s and five Fw 190 D-9/11s. The parti-colored paint on these Fw 190 D-9s have been interpreted as an indication of the high combat spirits among its personell. But the conspicuous red and white stripes in fact were applied only in order to avoid German AAA from opening fire against the 'Doras'. The most successful among JV 44's Fw 190 D-9 pilots was Knight's Cross holder Leutnant Heinz 'Heino' Sachsenberg--the son of thirty-one-victory World War I ace and Pour le Merite holder Gotthard Sachsenberg. Heinz Sachsenberg had served with 6./JG 52 on the Eastern Front from late 1942, and achieved his first victory on April 21, 1943. Fourteen months later, he became the sixty-ninth German fighter pilot to surpass the 100-victory-mark. On August 23, 1944, after scoring his 104th and last victory, Sachsenberg was shot down and seriously injured in combat with U.S. Mustangs over Romania. 'Sachsenberg was a good pilot,' said Galland, and he felt safer when his aircraft were in the air However, Sachsenberg had barely recovered from his wounds when he was posted to JV 44. Maybe as an indication of this, his last combat aircraft carried the inscription Sell my clothes, I'm going to heaven

Sachsenberger survived the war, but never recovered from his wounds, and passed away on June 17, 1951.

Motto reads' Verkaaft's mei Gwand 'I foahr in himmel!' (Sell my clothes I'm going to heaven) Red 1 was one of the four or five Doras known to have been assigned to the Airfield Defence Staffel of Generalleutnant Adolph Galland's Jagdverband 44. The intended role of this small unit was to defend the airspace above JV 44's operational base during the take-off and landing of the Me 262 jets, when they were most vulnerable to Allied fighter attack. The extensive deployment of flak units around the airfield and its approaches necessitated the painting of the D-9s' undersides in a dark color (usually agreed to be red) with narrow white longitudinal stripes, such that they not be mistaken for Allied aircraft which regularly prowled the airfields.

Heinz "Wimmersal" Sachsenberg was born on 12 July 1922 at Dessau in Sachsen-Anhalt. His uncle, Gotthard Sachsenberg, was a fighter pilot in World War 1 recording 31 victories and receiving the Pour-le-Merite. Following flying training, Sachsenberg was posted to JG 52, based in the southern sector of the Eastern Front, in the autumn of 1942. Feldwebel Sachsenberg was assigned to 6./JG 52. He achieved his first victory on 21 April 1943, when he shot down a Russian Il-2 Sturmovik ground-attack aircraft. By the end of the 1943, he had 52 confirmed victories, including four victories on 26 July to record his 18th through 21st victories, and a further four on 4 August (23-26).

In January 1944, Sachsenberg's Bf 109 G-6 "Yellow 8" was badly damaged by a Russian fighter and he had to crash-land back at his airfield. He just managed to scramble clear of his machine before it exploded. He was recommended for the award of the Ritterkreuz at the end of March after 76 victories but was destined not to receive the award until he had achieved 101 victories. On 7 May, he shot down six Russian aircraft (77-82). He recorded five victories on 8 June (97-101). On 9 June 1944 Fahnenjunker-Feldwebel Sachsenberg was awarded the Ritterkreuz for 101 victories. On 23 August 1944, he was shot down in Bf 109 G-6 (W.Nr. 166 233) "Yellow 1" and badly injured over Romania by USAAF P-51 fighters. On 3 March 1945, he had raised his victory total to 103 victories when he shot down P-51 over Hungary. On 16 April Sachsenberg shot down a P-39 for his 104th and last victory.

Later, Sachsenberg transferred to JG 7 to fly Me 262 jet fighters. Here, he briefly led 9./JG 7 before joining JV 44 in April 1945. Sachsenberg was tasked with setting up a Platzschutzstaffel, flying Fw 190 D-9 fighters, to protect the Me 262s during their most vulnerable phases - take-off and landing. The unit was variously known as the Sachsenberg-Schwarm or the Papagei Staffel. Sachsenberg died of complications from the wounds he received during the war on 17 June 1951.

"Wimmersal" Sachsenberg flew 520 missions in recording 104 aerial victories. All but one of his victories were recorded on the Eastern Front.
