FW 190D-9 skinpack by Emel, July 2010.
Prenzlau-Dora's - FW 190D-9s of the Gruppen Stab of IV./JG 3

In early 1945 the war in the west did not go well for the Luftwaffe. After the disastrious Bodenplatte-operation things would soon take the turn from worse to bad, as on the eastern front the Russians launched their next offensive from the bridgeheads of Narew. Initial attempts to stop the advancing red army failed and soon the German Wehrmacht was once again on the retreat all the way from the Baltic coast to the Carpathians. Alarmed by the events folding in the east the German high command ordered all available air units in the west to re-deploy to the eastern front to help stemm the Russian advance. This action left temporarily all but two units available to the western front, JG 2 and JG 26. For these two units this was nothing new as they had spent much of the war in similar situation. For The former sturm pilots of IV./JG 3, poised for action against the American heavy bombers flying at high altitude, the new directives which found the pilots stationed at Prenzlau airfield flying low-level bombing and strafing attacks against the soviet troops advancing towards Stettin and Berlin, it must have been quite a change.

In the chaotic last weeks of the war IV./JG 3 received a few of what arguably was the finest piston engined fighter in the Luftwaffe. The Focke Wulf FW 190D-9. What ever the number of these fighters which found their way to IV./JG 3 was, it is believed that they were all flown by the Gruppenstab and the 14. Staffel.

The theme for the FW 190 Dora's of this skin-project revolves with the few known variants flown by the Stab of IV./JG 3 from Prenzlau in March 1945. Information of the aircraft visual appearance is based mostly on interpretations of three B/W photographs from the Jagdwaffe series, 'War in the East 1944-1945 by Christer Bergström and Martin Pegg' but also on a couple of colour profiles from the 'walk around FW 190D-9 by Squadron Signal publication','Gagero publishing' and the French 'Planes and Pilots series, FW 190 by D Breffort and A Jouineau'. All these publications held varying interpretations of what these machines looked like. So what I did basically was just picking up the best of the available information, combined that with my ideas and interpretations and worked from there and so, the skins you see here is what happend. Again, this was not so much an effort to recreate 100 percent accurate replicas of aircraft as it was an attempt to revive a few selected aircraft which have until now been in existence only in old photographs. I find it very facinating that we have the ability to revive these old flying machines from the photos this way, and put them back to the air flying like they once did 70 years ago.

I hope you find these skins enjoyable when next time taking off with the fearsome 'long nose' 190.

Prenzlau Dora's:
1. FW 190D-9 Blue 1, Stab IV./JG 3, Prenzlau, March 1945.*
2. FW 190D-9 Blue 2, Stab IV./JG 3, Prenzlau, March 1945.*
3. FW 190D-9 Black Double Chevron, Olt. Oskar Romm Kommandeur of IV./JG 3, Prenzlau, March 1945.
Olt. Oskar Romm was appointed Kommandeur of IV./JG 3 on 7 February 1945. Romm felw his last combat sortie On 24 April 1945. After clashing with a formation of Il-2s an fighters he was forced to crashland near Prenzlau and was injured. Oskar Romm ended the war with 92 victories to his credit.
4. FW 190D-9 Black Chevron, Gruppen adjutant of IV./JG 3, Prenzlau, March 1945.**

*Inspite that I chose to use the blue colour for the code numbers like seeing in various publications, the colour is more likely green as blue usually represents the Stab-flight of a Geschwader.

** Eventhough this aircraft has the markings of the Gruppenadjutant, it is understood to have actually been Romm's reserve aircraft. It was occassionally flown also by Fw. Werner Martin of the Gruppen Stab and Uffz. Karl-Heinz Pütt of the 16. Staffel. Pütt may have achieved two of his three victories while flying this machine.
