WNr 550476 The personal mount of the Commander of 1./JG 1, Oblt Georg "Murr" Schott, it carries Schott's personal marking consisting of an arched black cat. The black and white checkerboard pattern served, for a short timeframe during the summer of 1943, as a unit marking for 1./JG 1. Georg Scott flew already during the Spanish CivilWar, where he gained three aerial victories in 1938. During the Battle of France, he downed two Hurricanes and two MS.406s. He was one of the most successful pilots of his unit during the Battle of Britain, and in a span of five weeks, he had brought down eight Spitfires. In 1943, he served with I./JG 1 (ex IV./JG 1). Integrated into 1.Staffel, he served as its commander from the beginning of June, 1943. Over the next two months, he shot down three B-17s and a Hawker Typhoon. The 27th of September, 1943, became a fateful day for Scott, when, in a fight with American bombers, his fighter was hit by defensive fire, and Scott bailed. Despite having been able to get into his life raft, rescue did not locate him until he was found with no signs of life on the shore of the island of Sylt on October 11th, 1943.

W.Nr.550476, osobní stroj velitele 1./JG 1 Oblt. Georga "Murr" Schotta. Stroj nese Schottův osobní emblém, nahrbeného erného kocoura. erno-bíle kostkovaná příď byla během krátkého úseku léta roku 1943 ozna ením 1./JG 1. Georg Schott létal ji ve panělské ob anské válce, kde získal u 2.J/88 v prosinci 1938 tři vítězství. Během Bitvy o Francii sestřelil dva Hurricany a dva MS.406.

Focke-Wulf W.Nr. 430352, 2. /JG 1, Dortmund Airfield, Germany, January, 1944

The Focke-Wulf Fw 190s of I. Gruppe, JG 1, are famous for their colourful markings, especially for their checkered or striped cowlings. Black & white stripes identified the Gruppe´s Stab aircraft and appeared in the second half of 1942 for the first time. After the surprise attack by the 78th FG´s Thunderbolts against JG1's airbase on October 8, 1943, the remainder of the Gruppe (1st, 2nd and 3rd Staffel) changed their checkered cowlings, being too similar to those of the 78th FG, to black and white stripes. The stripes completely disappeared from JG 1 aircraft during the first half of 1944. The red horizontal band on the fuselage was typical in the fall of 1943 and early 1944, and not only on JG 1 aircraft. It´s meaning is not currently clear, and should not be confused with the Reich Defence marking used from the summer of 1944 on.

W.Nr. 430352, 2. /JG 1, Dortmund Airfield, Germany, January, 1944 Focke-Wulfy Fw 190 od I. Gruppe JG 1 jsou známé díky svému pestrému zbarvení, kdy létaly s kostkovaným èi pruhovaným vzorem na motorovém krytu. Èerno-bílé podélné pruhy oznaèovaly stroje štábu této Gruppe a objevily se v druhé polovinì roku 1942.

Focke-Wulf Fw 190A8 White 7 Flown by Walter Kohne

Focke-Wulf Uffz. Walter KÖHNE, 1./JG1, Deelen, the Netherlands, July, 1943

Walter Köhne came to JG1 from the Eastern Front, where he had flown with 4./JG52. His commander was the legendaryGerhard Barkhorn at that time. His first aerial successes were gained on the Eastern Front, and he was to become one of the greatest pilots with JG1 operating over the Western Front. He became a lieutenant, and took over command of 6./JG11. He achieved his 30th, and last, victoryduring Operation Bodenplatte, on January1st, 1945. He joined III./EJG2 in the spring of 1945 to flythe Me262. Each unit (Staffel) within JG1 had its own engine cowl and spinner color. Attached to 3./JG1, Kohne's aircraft had a yellow cowl and spinner. The fuselage number, '7', as well as the spinner, are often portrayed as white although they were most likely yellow as portrayed here. It is assumed that this aircraft was one of the first front line Fw 190 to flywith the W.Gr.21 rocket launchers.

Uffz. Barva morových krytù a ku;elù rozlišovala jednotlivé Staffel I./JG 1. V rámci 3.Staffel I./JG 1 operující Köhneho stroj má ;lutý motorový kryt a vrtulový ku;el.

Anton-Rudolf 'Toni' Piffer
Leutnant

Anton-Rudolf "Toni" Piffer was born on 16 May 1918 at Zirol in the Tirol region of Austria. He joined the Luftwaffe in 1938. On 3 April 1942, Piffer was posted to JG1 based in Holland. Feldwebel Piffer was assigned to 11./JG1. He recorded his first victory on 19 September, when he shot down a RAF Mosquito twin-engine photo-reconnaisance aircraft over Osnabruck. The unit was redesignated 2./JG1 on 1 April 1943. By the end of 1943, Oberfeldwebel Piffer had 17 victories to his credit. However, he had received wounds as a result of an emergency landing near Terwolde on 18 October, due to engine damage to his Fw 190 A-6 (W.Nr. 530 720) "Black 3". He was wounded again in aerial combat with USAAF bombers and fighters on 11 November. On 8 April 1944, Piffer shot down a USAAF B-24 four-engine bomber near Salzwedel but was shot down himself in Fw 190 A-8 (W.Nr. 170 044) "Black 3". He was wounded in the encounter. Piffer was promoted to the rank of Leutnant and appointed Staffelfuhrer of 1./JG1 on 1 May 1944. On 8 April, he was wounded over Salzwedel in aerial combat. He successfully baled out of Fw 190 A-8 (W.Nr. 170 044) "Black 3". Piffer was required to make a belly-landing on 13 May, when he was rammed by a USAAF P-47 fighter. He was more fortunate than his opponent however, who crashed into the sea. On 16 June, Piffer shot down two RAF Spitfire fighters over the Invasion front. On 17 June 1944, Piffer was shot down and killed in Fw 190 A-8 (W.Nr. 172 604) "White 3" in aerial combat with USAAF fighters over La Cordonniere. He was posthumously awarded the Ritterkreuz on 20 October 1944.

"Toni" Piffer was credited with 35 victories. All his victories were recorded over the Western front and included 26 four-engine bombers.
