Focke-Wulf Fw 190A-4 of Hauptmann Fritz Losigkeit, Gruppenkommandeur of 1./JG1 1943
Depicted shortly after JG1's major reorganisation of 1 April 1943. This particular aircraft was clearly on charge prior to the units redesignatin. This deduction is supported not so much by the Gruppes 'devil in the clouds' badge on the cowling (which survived the transition from IV./Jg1 to I./Jg1), but from the round patch just visible aft of the fuselage balkenkreuz where the previous IV.
Gruppe circle symbol has been neatly over sprayed.
The cowling design
- Either all white black and white horizontal stripes or black and white checkers - was introduced by the new I./Jg1 as a device to facilitate rapid reassembly in the air after the gruppe had sythed its way through an American bomber formation.
The green spinner tip indicated a machine of the Gruppenstab and the yellow undercowling panel was carried over from earlier Channel fron bf109s.
The black and white zigzag pattern aft of the exhaust slots was one of many similar designs intended primarily to hide exhaist stains form the BMW radial.
The redboarded sheils beneath the windscreen, comprising silver fighter pilot's combat clasp wings superimposed on a black maltese cross, was the Geschwader emblem of the period.
Finally the row of eight tiny flags below the cockpits sill illistrated Losigkeits carrer to date From left to right, the first five depicted the nations he faught against (Spain, Where he was shot down captured during the civil war, Belgium, Netherlands, France and Great britain), The final three were contries in which he had been stationed (Japan - as an attache at the tokyo embassy - Norway and denmark)
In June 1943 Losigkeit was posted to the eastern front to assume command of III./JG51.
he later rose to the rank of Geschwaderkommodore, first of Jg51 itself and then, in the closing weeks of the war, of JG77.
Of his 68 confirmed victories about a dozen - including one four engined bomber - had been scored in the west.Focke-Wulf Fw 190A4 Stab I./JG1 Geschwader Adjutent Hans Ehlers WNr 581 Holland 1943

Jan McGlaun Caves On 4/26/2013 8:58 PMI am the daughter of the Bombardier on the US B-17 Fortress that Rolf Strohal claims to have shot down on 13 June 1943 (70 years ago this June 2013) at 800m--location CJ-8 (NW Texel). I have recently corresponded with Andreas Zapf in Germany. He and I concluded that Olt. Rolf Strohal probably had been the pilot of the FW 190 which downed "Shackeroo" B-17 Flying Fortress over the North Sea off the coast of Holland. All 10 men in the crew of "Shackeroo" survived that day and were rescued by MTB 245, a British torpedo boat. My Dad is 94 years old and remembers that mission as if it happened yesterday. Dequindre McGlaun, Bombardier, 94th Bomb Group. 333rd Squadron, US Eighth Air Force; Pilot, Capt. Howard Kirk; Commanding Officer that day flying Co-pilot, Major Louis Thorup; Navigator, Arvid Dahl were the officers on "Shackeroo"--13 June 1943. As far as I know, My Dad is the only living survivor of 'Shackeroo' in 2013. He was awarded a Purple Heart for that mission.
