Focke-Wulf Fw 190A-4 6./JG 1 WNr 5533, flown by Oblt. Wolfgang Leonhardt, CO of 6./JG 1, Woensdrecht the Netherlands October 1942

Profile: Oblt. Wolfgang Leonhardt, CO of 6. Staffel JG 1, shot down five enemy aircraft over the course of the Second World War. All were on the Western Front. He met his fate on February 4th, 1943, when he was shot down by defensive fire coming from a four-engined heavy bomber he was attacking. He did not survive the resulting crash. The standard camouflage of this aircraft from the Arado factory had the fuselage sides, fin and rudder sprayed with stripes in RLM74. The yellow numbers indicated the II. Gruppe aircraft from the 6. Staffel, the horizontal stripe in the Staffel colour behind the fuselage cross was also used by the II.Gruppe. The 6./JG 1 marking, the Tatzelwurm, in the Staffel colour appears on the engine cowl.

Photo 01: Less easy to explain are these Fw 190s which, to judge from the 'Englandblitz' badge on the machine in the foreground, clearly belonged to a night fighter unit and may have been one of the Fw 190A-4s from 10./JG11 assigned to 10./NJG3. The machine in the background with the tactical marking 'Red 5' and a II. Gruppe bar aft of the fuselage Balkenkreuz, also has a large white gull painted below the cockpit. Such a marking is known to have been applied to the Fw 190A-5 flown by Hptm. Dietrich Wickop of II./JG1 in May 1943 (see page 141 of 'Defenders of the Reich', Volume 2, published by Classic Publications). As there is a link back to JG1 via a number of redesignations, it is possible that Wickop's machine may have been the Fw 190A-5 later assigned to 10./NJG3 as D5+XY, and is shown here before being repainted in new camouflage and markings.

Focke-Wulf W.Nr. 431007, flown by Heinz Bär, CO of II./JG 1, Störmede Air Base, Germany, April, 1944

The personal mount of Heinz Bär wears the typical camouflage scheme of RLM 74, 75 and 76. The yellow lower cowling identified German aircraft flying over the Western Front. The white rudder was often used by the formation leaders from 1943 through to the second half of 1944. The red fuselage band was seen on aircraft of several fighter units during the spring of 1944. Besides JG 1, the same marking could be found on JG 300 aircraft. Heinz Bär is the eighth ranking fighter ace of the Third Reich, shooting down 221 enemy aircraft. He was awarded the second highest German millitary honor – the Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords. He became the CO of the famous JV 44 unit armed with Me 262 jet fighters and colourful Fw 190 D-9s.

Focke-Wulf ALFRED BINDSEIL, 6./JG 1, Störmede, Germany, Spring 1944

Fw 190A-8, 6./JG 1, based at Stormede, Germany, spring of 1944. The pilot of this machine was Feldwebel Alfred Bindseil, who's commanding officer at the time was Heinz Bär. Bindseil achieved five victories, one of which was on the 13th of May, 1944, when he severed the tail surfaces of a Mustang with his propeller. Despite damage to his own aircraft, he managed to land safely back at his base. He went MIA on June 20, 1944, after combat with Spitfires at St. Lo, in France. His aircraft is currently reconstructed and displayed in Germany.

Heinz Bar

SERVICE:

Heinz Bär learned to fly gliders as a teenager. After the Hitler and the National Socialists came to power, Bär entered the German's clandestine pilot training program that would soon provide pilots for the airline Lufthansa and the air arm Luftwaffe. Bär enlisted in the Luftwaffe and following advanced training was accepted as an Non-Commissioned Officer Pilot.

As World War II began in Europe, Heinz Bär held the rank of Unteroffizer (or Corporal) with the 1. Staffel, I Gruppe of Jagdgeschwader 51 which flew the Messerschmitt Bf 109E fighters. Feldwebel (or Technical Sergeant) Bär downed his first enemy aircraft, an American-made French Armee de L' Air Curtiss Hawk 75A fighter over Weissenberg, Germany on September 25, 1939. During the Battle of Britain, he was the Luftwaffe's top scoring NCO pilot with a total of 17 kills during that period. He had acquired 27 aerial victories by July 2, 1941 and was commissioned a Leutnant (or 2nd Lieutenant) plus awarded the Ritterkreuz (or Knight's Cross).

Leutnant Bär became the Gruppenkommandeur of IV/JG 51 as the unit transferred to the East on July 27, 1941 attached to JG 53 'Pik As', to join the invasion of the Soviet Union. Lt. Bär flew the Bf 109F during this period.

Oberleutant (1st Lieutenant) Bär was awarded the Eichenlaub (or Oak Leaves) to his Ritterkreuz following his 56th victory on August 14, 1941. On November 24, 1941, after the death of Kommodore Werner Mölders, JG 51 became the 'Mölders' Geschwader. On February 16, 1942, Bär was awarded the Schwertern (or Swords) to his Ritterkreuz mit Eichenlaub plus he was promoted to Hauptmann (or Captain) after his 90th aerial victory.

Hauptmann Bär transferred to the Mediterranean Front to become the Gruppenkommandeur of I/JG 77 'Herzas' on May 1, 1942. He flew the Bf 109F and later the Bf 109G models. The strain of constant battle and knowledge of inevitable defeat of Axis forces in the Mediterranean later caused the stressed-out Bär to be relieved from command back to Germany in disgrace.

Following his recuperation, Hauptmann Bär was soon assigned to Reich's Defense duties with II/JG 1 'Oesau' to fly the heavily armed Focke-Wulf Fw 190A fighter as the Allied bombing campaign gathered momentum. He was eventually promoted to the rank of Major and the position of Gruppenkommandeur of II/JG 1. Bär gained his 200th aerial victory on April 22, 1944. On the sortie in which he downed his 200th aerial victory, Major Bär did not fly one of his own assigned Fw 190As but flew the now famous Fw 190A-7 'Red 23'. Bär would be credited with 21 heavy bombers to his Defense of the Reich tally by the end of the war.

In June 1944, Bär was promoted to Oberstleutnant (or Lieutenant Colonel) and transferred again to assume the position of Geschwaderkommodore of JG 3 'Udet'.

In January 1945, Bär became the Kommandeur of Ergänzungs-Jagdgeschwader 2, an advanced training unit for the Messerschmitt Me 262A jet pilots at Lechfeld, Germany. III/EJG 2 was soon transformed into an operational fighter unit. Bär downed 13 enemy bombers and fighters while he served with III/EJG 2. On April 23, 1945, Bär joined Generalleutnant (or Major General) Adolf Galland's Jagdverband 44, the so-called 'Squadron of Aces' or 'Squadron of Outcasts', for the last days of the war in Europe. When Galland was wounded, Bär took over command of the unit on April 26, 1945. With JV 44, he flew the prototype Me 262A-1a/U1 extra heavily armed with six cannon including two 20mm MG 151s, two 30mm MK 103s and two 30mm MK 108s. He downed his last three victories, all Republic P-47 Thunderbolts, with JV 44. Bär ended the war with the rank of Oberst (or full Colonel).

Postwar, Heinz Bär would eventually become an aviation consultant. In 1957, while performing aerobatics in a light plane on the anniversary date of his 200th aerial victory, Heinz Bär was killed instantly when he suddenly spun in from a low altitude.

REMARKS: Heinz Bär is the 8th ranking air 'Ace' of all time. He fought on every German front throughout the entire duration of World War II in Europe and Africa. His 16 aerial victories acquired while he flew the Me 262A place him as the 2nd ranking jet ace of WWII - Oberleutnant Kurt Welter downed 20+ enemy aircraft while he flew the Arado Ar 234B-2n, Me 262A-1a and Me 262B-1a nightfighters with 'Kommando Welter' and 10./Nachtjagdgeschwader 11. While fighting on every front and flying just about every type of German fighter, Heinz Bär was shot down 18 times and wounded on many occasions.

NOTE: Almost all of Heinz Bär's assigned combat aircraft were numbered 'Lucky 13', as his own preference regardless of his position within a respective unit.

Rüdiger von Kirchmayr

Rüdiger von Kirchmayr was born on 18 July 1921 at Klosterneuberg in Austria. In April 1941, Kirchmayr was attending Jagdfliegerschule 5. In summer 1941, he flew operational missions with 4./JFS 5 from Le Havre-Octeville, in support of JG 2 and JG 26 for the defence of France. On 20 September, von Kirchmayr recorded his first victory when he shot down a RAF Spitfire fighter. Von Kirchmayr was transferred to Ergänzung-Jagdgruppe West in February 1942. He had accumulated five victories at this time. On 5 June 1942, von Kirchmayr transferred to 4./JG 1 operating from bases in Holland.

On 17 April 1943, he was appointed Technische Offizier and attached to the Stabstaffel of II./JG 1. Von Kirchmayr was appointed Staffelkapitän of 5./JG 1 on 22 June 1943. Leutnant von Kirchmayr was to be particularly successful against the USAAF daylight bombing raids. He was shot down and wounded in aerial combat near Aachen in Fw 190 A-5 (W.Nr. 7333) "Yellow 5"on 1 December. By the end of 1943, Oberleutnant von Kirchmayr had 15 victories to his credit and had increased his tally to 35 by the time of the Allied invasion of Europe in early June 1944. However, not all his victories had been confirmed. On 15 July 1944, von Kirchmayr transferred to the Stabsstaffel of II./JG 1. He was shot down on 13 August in aerial combat with USAAF P-51 fighters. He successfully crash-landed although he was wounded in the engagement.

Von Kirchmayr was appointed Gruppenkommandeur of I./JG 11 on 1 October. He led the Gruppe to the Eastern front in January 1945 where it participated in a number of successful fighter bomber missions attacking bridges, motor vehicles and troop concentrations. Von Kirchmayr claimed the destruction of a tank and numerous trucks. Additionally, he claimed nine Russian Yak-9 fighters shot down, including three on 10 February and two on 12 February. Hauptmann von Kirchmayr was recommended for the award of the Ritterkreuz but was initially rejected. He was finally awarded the decoration sometime in April. In April he left JG 11 and became member of JV 44.

Rüdiger von Kirchmayr was credited with 50 victories in 392 missions. He recorded 41 victories over the Western front, including 10 confirmed and another unconfirmed four-engined bombers.
