Profile 0B-0C: Focke-Wulf Fw 189A-2 Aufklarungsgruppe(H)/14 Salzburg, 1945. This Fw 189A-2 of AufklGr (H)/14 is seen with Eastern Front tactical markings in yellow as it was when captured by US forces at Salzburg 1945. The slender wings, matchstick booms and small Argus engines of the Fw 189 did not give rise to much optimism when viewed for the first time, yet the type achieved an enviable reputation with its pilots. Superbly agile, the Uhu could escape most fighter attacks by tight turns, while the reliable engines and smooth ride made it a comfortable aircraft in which to fly. Most served on the Eastern Front wearing the theatre markings of yellow bands around the boom and wingtips. This is an Fw 189A-2, which introduced the MG 812 twin machine-gun installation to both dorsal and tailcone positions.

This photograph is of a somewhat rare version of a ubiquitous reconnaissance aircraft Luftwaffe Aufklärer Focke-Wulf Fw 189F-1 Uhu (Owl), 5H+RK, captured by American Forces at Salsburg. Flown by Aufkl.Gr. (H)/14, the camouflage was standard. This photograph, originally in color, has badly sepiad over the years. Nevertheless, the yellow tactical rudders, engine cowls and wing tips are still clearly recognizable. The individual aircraft letter, "R", is red (Staffel color), outlined in white (Gruppe color).
