Messerschmitt Bf 109G6 ANR 2Gr1Sqn Giovanni Spigaglia Villafranca Italy 1944

Messerschmitt Bf 109 G-6/R3, of Nudeo Comando, 2° Gr. C., Villafranca (VR), November 1944. This Bf 109 G-6 is believed lo have been flown by Cap. Giovanni Spigaglia and, unusually, has a tall tail, a D/F loop aerial and tall radio mast. The aircraft was camouflaged in a standard RIM 74/75/76 scheme and has the German Balkenkreuze together with ANR markings on the fuselage, as applied in October 1944. Some doubt remains over the colour of the single chevron as it is not known if this was applied by the Italians in blue, as shown in the profile, or whether this marking had been inherited from the earlier German owners. In the Luftwaffe, this marking was normally applied to the machine flown by the Gruppen Adjutant and may, in fact, have been light green. Uppersurface markings were as shown in Plan View V (top) |Ref. Photos 209 and 210).

Messerschmitt Bf 109G6R6R3 ANR Nucleo Comando 2 Gruppo Yellow 8 Cascina Vaga Jun 1944

Messerschmitt Bf 109 G-6/R6/R3, of Nudeo Comando, 2° Gr. C., Cascina Vaga (PV), June 1944 This Bf 109 was flown by Cap. Massimino Mancini and, although depicted here with 20 mm cannon in underwing gondolas, these were very unusual on ANR Gustavs and were almost certainly soon removed. The camouflage was a standard Erla factory 74/75/76 scheme with small, round, evenly spaced mottles on the fuselage, and all German markings were overpainted and replaced by ANR insignia. The black marking has been positioned in an area previously occupied by the Luftwaffe Balkenkreuz and indicates that it was applied by the Italians rather than the Germans. Note that the lower cowling has been left in its yellow finish.

Messerschmitt Bf 109G6 ANR 2° Gruppo 1° Squadriglia Black 2 Villafranca Italy Oct 1944

Messerschmitt Bf 109 G-6, 'Black 2' of 1° Squadriglia, 2° Gr. C, Villafranca (VR), October 1944. Retaining the tactical markings of its previous German unit, including a yellow fuselage band not seen on any other ANR Bf 109s, this late G-6 had a tall tail, an Erla canopy and R3 Rustatze. The aircraft was marked with Balkenkreuze on the fuselage sides and under the wings but also carried Italian flags under the cockpit and on the tail. The camouflage apparently consisted of a 74/75176 scheme and the appearance of this aircraft suggests it has seen many missions before reaching 2° Gruppo. Standard 1° Squadriglia codes and markings were carried, this being the first documented instance of the white 'Gigi Tre Osei’ insignia on the nose of an ANR Bf 109, although whether upper wing fasces were applied is not known.

Messerschmitt Bf 109G6 ANR 2° Gruppo C Cascina Vaga Jun 1944 0A

Messerschmitt Bf 109 G-6 of 2° Gr. C., Cascina Vaga (PV), June 1944. This speculative profile has been created from a photograph taken at Cascina Vaga airfield and combines what is shown in the photograph with what is known of the ANR markings applied to 2° Gr.C. Gustavs in June 1944 when the aircraft was delivered. This machine had originally belonged to l./JG 4 and retains that unit's camouflage of dark green and dark brown uppersurfaces with RLM 76 undersurfaces. Also retained is the yellow undercowling and white fuselage band, although due to an ambiguous directive dated 5 June 1944, the latter was soon removed from all Italian Gustavs. The spinner has been shown in RLM 70 although a white segment, not visible in the photograph, may have been applied. Wing fasces were as shown in Plan View U.

Messerschmitt Bf 109G14 Erla ANR 2° Gruppo 5° Squadriglia Yellow 1 Mario Bellagambi WNr 464380 Osoppo Italy Mar 1945

Bf 109G-14, W. Nr. 464380, flown by Magg. M. Bellagambi, CO of 5 Squadriglia, 2 Gruppo Caccia, Aeronautica Nazionale Repubblicana, Osoppo, Italy, March 1945. th After the declaration of Italian Social Republic on September 18 , 1943, a puppet state on the territory of Italy, occupied by German military under the command of Benito Mussolini, Germany allowed this Republic to establish its own military force of four divisions. Its air force component called Aeronautica Nazionale Repubblicana consisted of two fighter plane groups (Gruppo Caccia), torpedo groups (Gruppo Aerosiluranti Buscaglia) and several transportation squadrons. In 1945, both fighter plane squadrons flew Messerschmitts Bf 109G-6/G-10/G-14. The commander of 5 Squadriglia, called Diavoli Rossi, was Maggiore Mario Bellagambi, a fighter ace with 14 shot downs. After WWII, in 1949, he was, once again, admitted to Italian air force where he, prior to his the retirement, became a Generale di brigata aerea. He died in Florence on June 25th, 2001. Bellagambi’s 109 is camouflaged with RLM 74/75/76 colours, the sides of the fuselage are very likely darkened with Italian Verde Oliva Scuro 2 colour. The same colour is applied to the stain underneath the red devil, the emblem of 5 squadriglia. The rudder, supplied by one of the subcontractors, bears a camouflage painted in RLM 81 and 82. It is probable that the bottom engine part was yellow or repainted by RLM 76. The yellow lining of fuselage marking of the ANR aircraft is, compared to other aircraft, reversed or bears yellow triangles around the flag. Source: Eduard Bf 109G 14 1/48

Messerschmitt Bf 109G6 ANR 2° Gruppo 2Sqa Yellow 8 Cascina Vaga Jun 1944

Messerschmitt Bf 109 G-6, 'Yellow 8' of 2a Squadriglia, 2° Gr. C., Cascina Vaga (PV), June 1944. This Bf 109 G-6 had a tall tail and carried complete ANR markings, insignia and tactical codes typical of 2’’ Squadriglia during the summer of 1944. The camouflage was a standard scheme of RIM 74/75/76 and the fuselage shows little evidence of where earlier fuselage markings had been painted out. The rudder was originally finished in RLM 75 with patches in RLM 83 and partially oversprayed in the factory with random RLM 76 pattern, while the spinner was RLM 70 with a standard 1/3 white segment.

Messerschmitt Bf 109 G-6/R3, ‘White 5’ of 3'’ Squadriglia, 2° Gr. C., Villafranca (VR), July 1944. Although the basic camouflage scheme on 'White 5’ consisted of the standard RIM 74/75/76 colours, the tall tail unit fitted to this machine had a different scheme, probably in RLM 75 and 83. This mismatching occurred because rudder units delivered from sub-contractors were pre-painted in a different way to the rest of the aircraft. After final assembly, in order to tone down the contrast between the two finishes, the rudder was often partially oversprayed - typical of the Regensburg assembly line - while the Erla factory seem to have completely oversprayed them. The particular RLM 76 pattern oversprayed on this machine has been frequently observed on most Gustavs of the 165xxx series of Werknummern. This aircraft carried complete ANR markings, including the rarely seen 'Gamba di Ferro' insignia on the nose. [Ref. Photo 1971.

Ugo Drago, the commanding officer of 4“ Sq., this Gustav was finished in 75 and 83 camouflage colours with 76 on the undersurfaces. The black fuselage number was outlined in white and the style of ANR insignia, large fuselage flags and standard sized flags on the tail, were typical of the Bf 109 G-1 Os of 4'’ Squadriglia. As was usual in the last months of the war. German Balkenkreuze were retained on the upper and lower surfaces of the wings, as shown in Plan View X.

Messerschmitt Bf 109G14 Erla ANR 2Gr5Sqa Yellow 1 Mario Bellagambi WNr 464380 Osoppo Mar 1945 01

Messerschmitt Bf 109 G-14 W.Nr.464380, 'Yellow 1' of Squadriglia, 2° Gr. C., Osoppo (UD), March 1945. The Gustav flown by Magg. Mario Bellagambi, the commander of 5 Sqa was a G-14 with a tall tail and long tailwheel but was not equipped with MW50 boost equipment. As a product of the Erla factory in late 1944, the aircraft was probably finished in a 75/83/76 scheme with the rudder in 81 and 83. The black outline style crosses on the fuselage are unique to the Bf 109 and the fringes on the fuselage flags were unusual in that they were either reversed as shown or may have had fringes on all edges. The Squadriglia's badge was applied on the cowling on a dark green patch, but no information is available on the upper wing markings.
