Photo 01-02: During the Summer of 1942, Lt. Walter Nowotny was involved in an air battle during which he shot down two Soviet fighters. However, his aircraft was hit by cannon fire which damaged the fuselage fuel tank and the area below the cockpit. With his Bf-109G-2 'Black 1' thus severely damaged, Nowotny flew home but his engine cut out while he was still approaching the airfield. The aircraft rapidly lost height and struck an airfield defense flak installation, overturned, and came to rest on its back. It took rescuers 20 minutes to release Nowotny from the cockpit.

Photo 01: This Messerschmitt Bf 109F-2, coded 'Black 8', has often been identified as being an aircraft of 4./JG54 flown by Ofw. Fritz Tegtmeier. However, the badge of I./JG54 is clearly visible on the fuselage side and, on account of the 24 victory bars, the machine is now believed to have been flown by Lt. Herbert Broennle of II./JG54 who is known to have been flying a 'Black 8', W. Nr. 9234, when his aircraft was 20 per cent damaged in an air battle on 17 February 1942. This photograph possibly shows the same machine although the aircraft here appears to have been damaged by flak rather than in an air battle.

A brief time as a fighter Instructor in 1943 he returned to the Russian Front. By May 1944 he had over 100 victories. August 1944 saw his appointment as Staffelkapitan of 3/JG-54. In March 1945 he transferred to JG-7 flying Me 262 Jet. By the end of the war he had flown 530 combat missions and had 146 victories, was awarded the Knights Cross, died at 1999 aged 81.

Profile 01: Messerschmitt Bf 109F-2 'Black 12' flown by Uffz. Peter Bremer of 2/JG54, Autumn 1941 Named 'Hermannchen', this aircraft's original 74/75/76 scheme has been modified with a random pattern of mottles in 79, 02 and 70 in order to improve its camouflage against the seasonal colouring. The pilot's six victories are recorded on the rudder in the usual way, but more unusual are the red and white warning stripes on the pitot tube.

Photo 01: In the Autumn of 1941, Uffz. Peter Bremer of II./JG54 flew two Bf 109Fs, both coded 'Black 12' and both named 'Hermannchen', or 'Little Hermann'. These photographs show, however, that the position and presentation of the name differed on each machine. On both aircraft the original camouflage finish has been considerably modified to lighten it.

Undersurfaces are Grey 76. As seen on a number of JG54's aircraft operating in winter conditions, the oleo fairings have been removed from the undercarriage.

Photo 01: Apart from its canopy framing, this Bf 109F-4 of JG54 has been painted in a temporary white finish for operations in the Winter of 1941/42 and is seen here displaying some wear. In particular, the white area under the cockpit has worn away to reveal part of the JG54 'Greenheart' emblem and the lower rudder, always an area to receive severe buffeting from the slipstream and erosion from loose snow, ice or other debris, shows similar signs of wear.

Knights Cross

Heinz Lange

Heinz Lange was born on 2 October 1917 in Köln. His father served as a pilot instructor in the Imperial Air Service. Lange entered the Luftskriegsschule Wildpark-Werder in 1937. After completing his training he joined 4./JG234 at Düsseldorf, later serving with II./JG132 and II./JG26. On 15 July 1939, Lange was transferred to 1./JG21 based at Gutenfeld in East Prussia. He flew his first combat missions during the Polish campaign. Afterwards, I./JG21 was deployed to the German Bight. Leutnant Lange claimed his first victory on 30 October 1939 when he shot down a RAF Blenheim twin-engine bomber near Quakenbück. I./JG21 participated in the French campaign. On 6 June, I./JG21 was redesignated III./JG54 and Lange was assigned to the Stabsstaffel. In August, Lange was promoted to Oberleutnant and was transferred to 8./JG54 on 25 August. By the end of October he had flown 76 missions during the Battle of Britain, including 32 over London and 13 in the fighter-bomber role. During the Balkan campaign, Lange flew six missions and three strafing attacks while based at Arad, Rumania. During Operation Barbarossa, III./JG54 flew in support of Army Group North in its drive on Leningrad. Lange had claimed seven victories before he was named Staffelkapitän of 1./JG54 on 1 October 1941. On 26 October he claimed the destruction of three locomotives. By the end of the year he had flown 45 missions over the Leningrad-Schlüsselburg-Wolchow area. Lange was appointed Staffelkapitän of III./JG51 on 6 November 1942.

After his 500th mission in February 1943, Lange was promoted to Hauptmann. During spring 1943, JG51 attacked the numerous railway lines located behind the Russian lines in preparation for Operation Citadel. On 22 August, he claimed a La-5, a Yak-1 and two Il-2s thus reaching a total of 40 victories. On 1 January 1944, he claimed his 50th victory.

From 7 January 1944, Lange was appointed acting Gruppenkommandeur of I./JG54. On 9 May 1944, Lange was named Gruppenkommandeur of IV./JG51. During July he claimed five more victories over Galicia. From August, IV./JG51 was based at Modlin, Poland primarily in the Stuka escorting role. The unit took part in support of operations against Russian bridgeheads over the Narew and Vistula rivers, as well as engaging Mediterranean-based American aircraft conducting fighter sweeps over the Eastern Front. On 15 October, Lange claimed his 70th victory for which he was awarded the Ritterkreuz on 18 November. He was promoted to Major on 1 January 1945. IV./JG51 participated in the evacuation of Danzig before receiving orders on 20 March to begin conversion to the Fw190A-8 and Fw190D-9 at Anklam. On 2 April 1944, Lange was appointed the sixth, and last, Geschwaderkommodore of JG51, although it was not until 12 April that he relinquished command of IV./JG51 to Oberleutnant Günther Josten (178 victories, RK-EL). On 28 April, Stab JG51 was disbanded and Lange returned as Gruppenkommandeur of IV./JG51. In the three weeks from 15 April until the end of the war, IV./JG51 claimed 115 victories for the loss of only five pilots. He flew his last mission on 29 April over Berlin.

After the war, Lange received a doctorate in law from the University of Kiel and worked for an insurance company. He remains an active member of JG51 veterans' organizations. Heinz Lange flew 628 missions and claimed 70 victories, all but one on the Eastern Front. Included in his total are 24 Il-2 Sturmoviks and 12 Bomber.

Walter 'Nowi' Nowotny Major

Walter 'Nowi' Nowotny was born on 7 December 1920 at Ceske Velenice/Gmünd on the Czechoslovakian/Austrian border. He joined the Luftwaffe on 1 October 1939. His flying training was completed at Jagfliegerschule 5 at Schwechat, near Vienna. Nowotny was posted to JG54 on 23 February 1941. Leutnant Nowotny was assigned to 9./JG54. His first four weeks with the unit were served with the Stabsschwarm of Ergänzungsgruppe/JG54. He claimed his first victories over Ösel Island on 19 July, when he shot down two Russian I-153 biplane fighters. However, he was, in turn, shot down in Bf-109 E-7 (W.Nr. 1137) 'White 2' by an I-153, flown by the future Russian ace Alexandr Avdeev (13 victories, killed in action 12 August 1942) of 153 IAP, VVS, over Riga Bay in this engagement. After three days and nights at sea in a rubber dinghy, Nowotny finally reached the shore. He recorded his 10th victory on 13 September.

On 11 March 1942, Nowotny transferred to 3./JG54. He shot down five Russian fighters on 20 July. On 2 August 1942, Nowotny claimed seven enemy aircraft shot down to record his 48th through 54th victories. On 11 August, he shot down two Russian MiG-3 fighters. His Bf109G-2 (W.Nr. 10360) was hit in the engagement and caught fire. Nowotny was able to bring the burning aircraft back to his base for a crash-landing, although he did suffer some injuries. Leutnant Nowotny was awarded the Ritterkreuz on 4 September for 56 victories. Nowotny, was appointed Staffelkapitän of 1./JG54 on 25 October 1942. He recorded his 75th victory on 20 March 1943. On 26 March 1943, Nowotny met the first Russian flown Spitfire fighters, operated by the 26 GvIAP of the Leningrad Air Defence, and shot down one of them for his 79th victory. In June, he shot down 41 enemy aircraft, including five on 1 June (84-88), six on 8 June (93-98), his 100th victory on 15 June, six on 21 June (109-114) and 10 on 24 June (115-124). On 10 August 1943, Nowotny was appointed Gruppenkommandeur of I./JG54. He recorded 49 Soviet planes shot down in August 1943, including nine on 13 August (129–137), six on 18 August (146-151) and seven on the 21 August (155-161).

His prolific scoring continued in September when he shot down 45 enemy aircraft during the month. On 1 September 1943, he shot down ten enemy aircraft (174-183); five in the space of 12 minutes during a morning sortie and another five in nine minutes at noon. He shot down six enemy aircraft the next day (184-189). On 4 September, Oberleutnant Nowotny was awarded the Eichenlaub (Nr 293) for 189 victories. He shot down five enemy aircraft on 8 September, including his 200th victory. On 14 and 15 September, he claimed six enemy aircraft on each day to raise his victory total to 215. Hauptmann Nowotny was awarded the Schwertern (Nr 37) on 22 September for 218 victories. During his last ten days on the Eastern Front, ending on 14 October 1943, Nowotny shot down 32 Russian aircraft, including eight on 9 October (224-231) and six on 13 (239-244) and 14 October (245-250). Nowotny was the first pilot in history to pass 250 victories and was now the top-scoring fighter ace of the Luftwaffe. On 19 October, he became the eighth recipient of the Brillanten. The Nazi propaganda machine turned Nowotny into a 'superstar' of the Luftwaffe. He had received the highest military awards available: Ritterkreuz mit Eichenlaub, Schwertern und Brillanten and was withdrawn from combat activity by the High Command. During the following months, his main role was to perform propaganda and moral-boosting duties before, on 1 April 1944, Hauptmann Nowotny was appointed Kommodore of JG101, an operational fighter-training unit, based at Pau in France.

In September 1944, Major Nowotny was put in charge of Kommando Nowotny, equipped with the Me 262 jet fighter. The unit consolidated a number of test units and was tasked with acquiring tactical knowledge and experience of Me 262 operations. The unit was based on two airfields northwest of Osnabrück: Achmer and Hesepe. Nowotny was besieged with difficulties in operationally testing the jet fighter. In addition to staving off the increasing Allied fighter presence the jets attracted, he was also beset with the technical difficulties a new and immature technology presented. By 7 November 1944, Nowotny had claimed three victories in the new jet fighter. Nowotny took off on 8 November 1944, flying against USAAF bombers with a fighter escort. The exact circumstances of Nowotny's death remain uncertain. Ground personnel reported hearing combat above the clouds. Nowotny reported he had downed a B-24 four-engine bomber and probably destroyed a P-51 fighter. He then reported an engine failure before making a garbled transmission referring to 'burning' over the radio. His Me 262A-1a (W.Nr. 110400) 'White 8' was seen to dive vertically out of the clouds and crash at Epe, 2.5 kilometres east of Hesepe. It is generally accepted that he was shot down by 1st Lt Edward 'Buddy' Haydon of the 357th Fighter Group, USAAF and Capt Ernest 'Feeb' Fiebelkorn (9 victories) of the 20th Fighter Group, USAAF whom shared a Me 262 victory at 12:45 over Achmer that day.

Walter Nowotny flew over 442 missions in achieving 258 victories. He recorded 255 of his victories over the Eastern front. Of his three victories recorded over the Western front, 2 were four-engine bombers and all 3 victories were gained while flying the Me 262 jet fighter. He claimed 24 victories over Il-2.

Rudolf 'Rudi' Rademacher

Rudolf 'Rudi' Rademacher was born on 19 July 1913 at Lüneburg. Unteroffizier Rademacher served with 3./JG 54 on the Eastern front from 1 December 1941. He achieved his first victory on 9 January 1942 on his fifth combat mission. He was awarded the Ehrenpokal on 19 October 1942. By the end of 1942 he had claimed 22 victories. In March 1943, he was transferred to 1./JG 54, the famous "Nowotny Schwarm" led by Walter Nowotny (258 victories, RK-Br, killed in action 8 November 1944) and also including Anton Döbele (94 victories, RK, killed in action 11 November 1943) and Karl "Quax" Schnörrer (46 victories, RK). Together the pilots of the Schwarm were to total over 500 victories between them. He claimed seven enemy aircraft shot down in one day on 5 July 1943 to record his victories 39 through 45. Rademacher was promoted Oberfeldwebel whilst serving with 1./JG 54. On 30 April 1943 he was awarded the Deutsches Kreuz. On 30 August 1944 he was transferred to 1./Jagdgruppe Nord, redesignated Ergänzungs-Jagdgeschwader 1 on 4 November 1944, based at Sagan, to undertake instructing duties. Despite his training duties Rademacher was able to engage in aerial combat and claimed five enemy aircraft shot down, including four four-engined bombers and P-47, during his stay with the unit. On 18 September 1944, during an attack on a formation of USAAF bombers, he was badly wounded when he was shot down in Fw 190 A-8 (W.Nr. 350193) "White 13". On 30 September 1944, he was awarded the Ritterkreuz for 81 victories.

In January 1945, Leutnant Rademacher transferred to 11./JG 7 where he undertook conversion training on to the Me 262 jet fighter. The training consisted of six flights totalling 150 minutes before he was declared operational. On 1 February 1945, he gained his first victory flying the jet, a RAF Spitfire over Braunschweig. In February 1945, he scored at least seven victories according to some sources. Rademacher was to be credited with at least 16 victories, including several Herausschüsse, flying the Me 262, although sources do differ over his final tally crediting him with scores as low as eight and as high as 24. "Rudi" Rademacher survived the war only to be killed in a glider crash at Lüneburg on 13 June 1953.

Rudolf Rademacher's final score is a matter of some conjecture. Sources claim his total to be 97, 102 and 126 in more than 500 missions. Some claim he had an additional 23 unconfirmed victories. It is thought he gained 76 victories over the Eastern front with JG 54, including 21 Il-2 Stormoviks and 7 Pe-2, and a further five whilst with JGr. Nord. To this can be added his jet victories, at least 16, including 11 four-engined bombers.

Karl "Quax" Schnörrer was born on 3 March 1919 at Nürnberg. Schnörrer joined I./JG 54, based on the Eastern front, in December 1941 after completing his operational training with Ergänzungsgruppe/JG 54. Unteroffizier Schnörrer was assigned to 1./JG 54. He recorded his first victory on 13 December. Schnörrer earned the nicknamed 'Quax' because he crashed three Bf 109 fighters on landing. Quax was an accident-prone cartoon character popular at that time. In late 1942, Walter Nowotny (258 victories, RK-Br, killed in action 8 November 1944) chose Schnörrer to be his Kaczmarek. Nowotny and Schnörrer were close friends and referred to each other by their nicknames - Nowi and Quax. Schnörrer had three victories to his credit at this time.

By March 1943, Anton "Toni" Döbele (94 victories, RK, killed in action 11 November 1943) and Rudolf Rademacher (97 victories, RK) had joined with Nowotny and Schnörrer to form one of the most feared formations in the Luftwaffe - the Nowotny Schwarm. These four men combined to score over 500 victories! Nowotny led the scoring by shooting down over 140 aircraft while flying with these men. Schnörrer, by comparison, had, by 20 March, flown 146 combat missions and recorded just four victories, the epitome of a conscientious Kaczmarek. He recorded his 20th victory on 18 August. Eventually fate caught up with the Nowotny Schwarm. On 11 November 1943, Anton Döbele was killed after colliding with another German fighter over the airfield near Smolensk.

The next day, Schnörrer would be seriously wounded. On 12 November 1943, Luftflotte 6 dispatched all available aircraft, a total of 215 sorties, despite the poor weather conditions, to the Nevel area. The Russians had broken through and were heavily supporting the advance with ground-attack aircraft. This was to be Walter Nowotny's last combat mission on the Eastern front, and Schnörrer flew as his wingman. Nowotny attacked a Russian Il-2 Sturmovik ground-attack aircraft and shot it down for his 255th victory. A second Il-2 attacked Nowotny's Fw 190 but Schnörrer managed to bring down this Il-2 for his 35th, and last, victory with JG 54. Schnörrer's Fw 190 A-5 (W.Nr. 410 021) then received hits from another Il-2. He baled out of his blazing Fw 190 at an altitude of no more than 50 to 70 meters. The parachute deployed only a few meters above the ground. German soldiers rescued the badly injured pilot, who had suffered broken legs and a skull fracture. The loss of "Toni" Döbele and the wounding of "Quax" Schnörrer was a severe blow to I./JG 54. Perhaps no one was more shaken than the young 23-year-old Schwarm leader Walter Nowotny.

Shortly afterwards, Nowotny was withdrawn from front-line service and transferred to command Schulgeschwader 101 in France. Having recovered from his wounds, Leutnant Schnörrer was assigned to Erprobungskommando 262 in June 1944, flying the Me 262 jet fighter. Here he was reunited with Walter Nowotny. The unit was renamed Kommando Nowotny on 25 September 1944. Schnörrer personally witnessed the death of Nowotny on 8 November 1944. Kommando Nowotny was absorbed into JG 7 following Nowotny's death. Schnörrer was assigned to 9./JG 7 and, on 19 March 1945, was appointed Staffelkapitän. While with this unit, Schnörrer achieved eleven victories, including nine four-engine bombers. He was awarded the Ritterkreuz on 22 March for 43 victories. On 30 March 1945, Schnörrer and Oberfähnrich Viktor Petermann (64 victories, RK) intercepted USAAF four-engine bombers over Hamburg. Schnörrer claimed two B-17s shot down, but his Me 262 was hit by crossfire from the bombers. He attempted to return to his base but was intercepted by USAAF P-51 fighters. Realising he could not outrun or out-fight them he baled out. Unfortunately, he struck the tailplane and, although in great pain, managed to open his parachute and land safely. He was to have one leg amputated, ending his combat career. Schnörrer died on 25 September 1979 at Nürnberg.

'Quax' Schnörrer flew a total of 536 missions and recorded 46 victories. He claimed 35 victories over the Eastern front, including 10 Il-2 Sturmoviks. Of his 11 victories recorded over the Western front, all were made flying the Me-262 and included nine four-engine bombers.
