Commander II./JG 53 plane of Hauptz Heinz Bretnütz (Heinz Bretnütz), who was mortally wounded in a battle with bombers of the 2nd Squadron of the 46th SBAP, evacuated from the place of forced landing

The bridge at Vishvill was an important strategic point, being the main crossing of the 56th MK, and had a serious cover. Almost immediately, at 06:48, Soviet aircraft were fired by anti-aircraft artillery, and at 06:50 attacked by a group of Bf 109. The German patrol was headed by the commander II./JG 53 Heinz Bretnütz, one of the best aces at that time Luftwaffe with 31 wins in the asset. Starting to attack the Soviet group in the target area, the German fighters continued to pursue the Security Council up to Nemakshaya. As a result of the battle, two SBs were shot down (according to the regimental railway services - they were missing), two made forced landings on Soviet territory, and two more made forced landings at the Siauliai airfield. However, this success cost the German fighters dearly - the aircraft of the leading group was shot down with retaliatory fire from radio operators and he himself was badly wounded in the leg. Bretnutz had the strength to make an emergency landing on Soviet territory in the Erzhvilsk region. Despite the fact that he was hidden by a Lithuanian family, and on June 26 he was transferred to the advancing German units, as a result of the gangrene that started on June 27, Bretnyutz died in hospital.

The German pilots who participated in the flight claimed a total of 8 victories. The enemy overestimated his achievements at least twice - in reality, the 2nd AE of the 46th SBAP lost four crews, and two more SBs made forced landings due to combat damage at the Siauliai airfield. In turn, the Soviet crews said that the joint fire of the shooters of all the crews managed to set fire to two German fighters. Downed Bf 109F-2 W.Nr. 6674 Bretnjutz became the first aircraft lost by the Germans in the air battles in the skies of the Baltic states (it is interesting that the plane, originally considered as a 100% loss, was subsequently found and evacuated).

The 3rd Squadron of the 46th SBAP, led by captain Gavrilov, was to attack the station of Gillen, however, judging by the records in the regiment’s combat logs and German data, the bombs were dropped on a completely different object. According to the traffic police, at 06:35, the squadron was fired at ZA in Tilsit district, at 06:40 ZA in Taurotenin district (10 km south of Tilsit), and at 06:45, crews dropped bombs on Gillen station. Further, at 06:53 in the area of Budveten - Kraupishken (10 km east of Gillen) were attacked by a group of Bf 109.

However, according to German data, at 06:45 (05:45 Berlin time), a group of Soviet aircraft bombed the railway station in Eidkau. In addition, judging by the timing, it can be definitely stated that a distance of 30 km, 20 km from Tilsit to Gillen, and another 10 km from Gillen to Budveten, could be flown at least 3-4 times. Most likely, the squadron navigator made an incorrect calculation, and instead of Tilsit went to some other city, which is not surprising in East Prussia with its densely populated territory. Apparently, it was one of the towns along the Tilsit-Staluppen or Lazdennen-Staluppenen railway. Judging by the scheme of departures of the 46th SBAP on June 22, 1941, it was Lazdennen, standing 40 km east of the Tilsit, on the Neman tributary, the Schelluppe river. Apparently

Soviet bombers were not lucky - in the area of their flight were all the airfields of fighter aircraft of the 1st German air corps, so it is not surprising that this squadron was attacked by German fighters. It is quite possible that the SB group flew right over the Rautenberg airfield (10-12 km west of Lazdennen), from which, apparently, in pursuit, several I./JG 54 fighters took off. to catch up with the Soviet crews already far in the depths of the Soviet territory, after they safely dropped bombs on Eidkau, which was standing on the border, and went east towards Kaunas. German fighters were headed by an experienced pilot, veteran of the war in Spain and fights on the western front, captain Reinhard Seiler, were in the group and other aces. According to German data account of the shot down was opened by Lieutenant Kintzinger, who declared the shot down SAT at 06:51. In total, the Germans claimed seven victories, and the main hero of the battle was the Hauptmann Seiler, who made a hat trick in this battle (4th, 5th and 6th pilot victories in World War II).

According to the results of the battle, the Soviet side recognized the loss of five SBs (according to the Regimental Static Battalion of the regiment, they all did not return from the combat mission), besides, another plane made an emergency landing at the Panevezys airfield because of combat damage with a wounded shooter. Only three aircraft returned to Gruzhnyay.

No matter how paradoxical it may have sounded, but, apparently, the heavy losses of the 2nd and 3rd squadrons of the 46th SBAP were largely predetermined by the successfully completed combat missions of the 9th SBAP. The 7th SAD bomber regiments received targets in the same area, in the Tilsit-Ragnet-Gillen triangle, and the German air defense was already fully armed. It should be noted that the division commander, Colonel P.M. Petrov understood the danger of interception, and at 05:30 he ordered the bombers of the 46th SBAP to escort the I-16 from the 10th IAP. Unfortunately for the crews of the 46th SBAP, according to the previous order, all the planes of the 10th IAP from 04:50 were in the air, covering Siauliai, and did not have time to get ready to escort the SB.

For the German pilots who were sitting in the "Messerschmitt" cabins, the SBs flying without a cover were undoubtedly easy targets, therefore the results of these battles and the losses suffered by the 46th SBAP are not supernatural. We note that the crews of the two Soviet squadrons, in the absence of fighter cover, suffered heavy losses, but were able to maintain their formation and shoot down one of the attacking opponents.

Profile's 0A-0B: Messerschmitt Bf109F-2, W.Nr. 6674, flown by Ritterkreuztrager Hptm. Heinz Bretnutz, Kommandeur of II./JG53 This aircraft was finished in an 02/71 scheme with the entire nose painted yellow, except for a Green 71 spinner backplate. Apart from the Kommandeur's insignia on the fuselage, the machine had been further personalised with the addition of a telescope mounted on the far right of the windscreen and the name 'Peter' under the cockpit. The aircraft is shown here with 30 victory bars, the last being a Spitfire claimed south of Dungeness on 3 May 1941. Hptm. Bretnutz claimed another six victories on the Channel Front before his unit transferred east to take part in 'Barbarossa'. On the first day of the invasion, 22 June 1941, Hptm. Bretnutz claimed his 37th victory, a Russian bomber, but had to make a forced landing and was seriously wounded. He was taken to hospital where one of his legs was amputated in an attempt to save his life, but he died on 27 June.

Kaminski had previously led the Zerstbrer Gruppe I./ZG26 and received the Ritterkreuz on 6 August for his successes against ground targets in the campaigns in Crete and Russia, at which time he had also claimed five aerial victories. Some sources have speculated that the two pale stripes on the right wingtip may have been some form of special recognition marking, but they are more likely to be evidence of a recent repair.

Before Operation 'Barbarossa', all aircraft of Stab/JG53 had their spinners and engine cowlings painted Yellow 04, but this was later overpainted in the colors 02, 70, 74 and 75, as depicted in this profile. Unusually, it is believed that the kill markings on the rudder of this machine were carried on the port side only. Note the canopy framing was Green 70.

Profile: Flown by the commander of III./JG53 this aircraft was photographed at Mannheim-Sandhofen in March 1941. The finish seems to have suffered from heavy polishing which has partially removed the mottle. Despite of that, the aircfraft does appear rather dirty as well. It's hard to tell whether the panel in front of the windscreen was RLM71 or RLM04 but photos of Jürgen Harders famous "Chevron Circle" shows the panel as RLM04 and it seems likely that all the aircraft of the Stabschwarm would use the same scheme. The Wrk.Nr of this aircraft is not known but the camoflage of RLM02/71 in the same pattern as used for the Bf109E during 1940 is identical to other aircraft in the Erla built 80xx series.

Photo 01: Contrary to popular belief, the Bf-109 was not fitted with any device for starting the engine by purely electrical means and relied on ground grew turning a handle which engaged with an inertia starter. Winding the handle turned a flywheel under the engine cowling and, once a certain speed had been attained, the engine fired. As soon as the engine started, the starter clutch was engaged by pushing in a control handle located in the cockpit and the propeller began to turn. Interestingly, the inertia starter was designed by the Eclipse company in the USA and was obtained by the German aircraft industry under licence. Here, ground staff help to start a Bf 109F of JG53. This particular machine is believed to have been flown by Hptm. Wolf-Dietrich Wilke, Kommandeur of III. Gruppe.

Photo 01: In the Autumn of 1941, Allied action from Malta was having an increasing effect on the German and Italian supply route to North Africa where the German situation was critical. Despite the decisive battles being fought in Russia, elements of Luftflotte 2 were moved to Italy and North Africa. By 28 November, advance elements of III./JG53 had reached Sicily with the rest of the Gruppe following soon afterwards. In this photograph, taken in early December 1941, Black 4 of 8./JG53 is seen in flight over the Alps during the transfer flight to Sicily. The Gruppe subsequently transferred to North Africa but returned to Sicily after only two weeks.

Messerschmitt Bf 109F 9./JG53 (Yellow 3+I) Russia 1941

Aircraft's original 74/75/76 scheme has been modified with a random pattern of mottles in 79, 02 and 70 in order to improve its camouflage against the seasonal colouring. An almost identical effect may be seen on this group of Bf 109Fs photographed in a hangar in Russia. Unfortunately, the unit is this case is not known, but 'White 3' in the centre of the picture has a row of white victory bars painted under the-Hakenkreuz on the fin, a position known to have been favored by JG53.

Herbert Kaminski

Herbert Kaminski was born on 24 May 1905 at Ohmswalde in the Ortelsburg region of Ostpreußen. In 1935, he was serving as a policeman but then transferred to the Luftwaffe. Kaminski served in the Spanish Civil War as a courier pilot during 1937 and 1938. On his return to Germany he underwent conversion training to become a fighter pilot. On completion of his training, Kaminski was posted to ZG26.

On 1 May 1940, he was appointed Staffelkapitän of 2./ZG26. He claimed his first victory during the French campaign. During August and September, he flew over 50 missions during the Battle of Britain claiming two RAF fighters shot down. On 18 August, his Bf 110 Zerstörer twin-engine fighter was badly damaged in aerial combat with RAF Hurricane fighters over England. He was forced to ditch his aircraft in the English Channel. He and his gunner survived the ditching and were rescued by a German naval minesweeper. Kaminski led 2./ZG76 during the Balkans campaign. He was shot down during a ground attack mission over Serbia and, after making an emergency landing, was captured and imprisoned. After 11 days in captivity and constantly threatened with being shot he was freed by German troops. Soon back in action, Kaminski undertook many ground attack missions destroying several tanks and three artillery pieces.

Over Crete, he shot down a RAF Gladiator biplane fighter. On 22 May 1941, Hauptmann Kaminski was appointed Gruppenkommandeur of I./ZG26. He led the Gruppe in the invasion of Russia. Performing mainly ground attack missions on Russian airfields, the Gruppe destroyed 51 aircraft on the ground in addition to claiming 11 aircraft in aerial combat.

Kaminski was awarded the Ritterkreuz on 6 August for five victories. Kaminski was transferred to the staff of the General der Jagdflieger as an advisor on Zerstörer operations. On 1 November 1941, Major Kaminski was appointed Gruppenkommandeur of I./JG53 based in Sicily. He shot down a RAF fighter over Malta on 20 December. In May 1942, I./JG53 was relocated to the Eastern front. He shot down a Russian LaGG-3 fighter on 28 June. On 24 July, I./JG53 was transferred to the southern sector of the Eastern front. During the transfer flight, Kaminski's Bf109G-2 (W.Nr. 13481) <<+ developed engine trouble. In attempting a forced-landed at Taganrog-North his aircraft crashed resulting in injuries that saw him hospitalised for a time.

Kaminski was appointed Gruppenkommandeur of II./ZG 76 on 5 October 1943 and led the Gruppe until 9 August 1944 on Reichsverteidigung operations. He would record a USAAF B-17 four-engine bomber shot down during his time with the unit. He relinquished command of the unit on 9 August 1944. In December 1944, Kaminski was appointed Kommandeur of Flugzeugführerschule A/B 41 at Frankfurt in Oder. He served in this role until the end of the war.

Kaminski was killed in an automobile accident at Garmisch on 18 July 1971. Herbert Kaminski was credited with seven victories in approximately 300 missions. He recorded one victory over the Eastern front. Of the six victories recorded over the Western front, one was a four engine bomber.

Franz 'Nawratil' Schieß

Franz 'Nawratil' Schieß (also spelt Schiehs) was born on 25 February 1921 at Worth near St Polten in Austria. He participated in the Polish campaign as an Arbeitsdienstmann before transferring to the Luftwaffe and undergoing fighter pilot training. Schie? was posted to JG53, based on the Channel front, on 8 March 1941. Leutnant Schie? was assigned to the Geschwaderstab, where he was appointed Adjutant under the tutelage of Gunther Freiherr von Maltzahn (68 victories, RK-EL). On 22 June 1941, Schie? recorded his first victories on the opening day of Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of Russia, when he shot down a Russian I-153 biplane fighter on a morning mission and a DB-3 twin-engine bomber in the afternoon. By early August, he had increased his tally to 14. In early August, JG53 were withdrawn from the Eastern front and, following re-equipment, deployed to the Mediterranean theatre. From bases in Sicily, Schie? operated over Malta recording 11 victories, one of which was not confirmed, including his 20th victory, a RAF Spitfire fighter shot down on 18 July 1942. At the end of November, JG53 was operating over Tunisia. Schie? continued his success, gaining a further 13 victories, including his first fourengine bomber, a USAAF B-17 shot down near Bizerte on 29 January 1943 for his 36th victory. On 16 February 1943, Schie? was appointed Staffelkapitan of 8./JG53. He successfully led the unit through the campaigns in Tunisia, Sicily and Italy. He recorded his 50th victory, a USAAF P-38 twin-engine fighter near Pantelleria, on 21 May. Oberleutnant Schie? was awarded the Ritterkreuz on 21 June for 55 victories. He was then sent on a lengthy leave. Returning to the front in August, Schie? shot down 12 enemy aircraft in 11 days of which seven were P-38 twin-engine fighters. Schie? failed to return from a mission on 2 September 1943. He led a scramble against a USAAF bomber formation over Mt Vesuvius. Schie? attacked the fighter escort and a dogfight developed extending over the sea to the island of Ischia. It is thought that Schie?, in Bf-109 G-6 (W.Nr. 160 022) 'Black 1', fell victim to the USAAF P-38 twin-engine fighter escort.

'Nawratil' Schieß was credited with 67 victories in 657 missions. He recorded 14 victories over the Eastern front. Of his 53 victories recorded over the Western front, three were four-engine bombers, 17 were P-38 twin-engine fighters and 18 were Spitfire fighters.

Gerhard Michalski was born on 25 June 1917 at Augsdorf in the Mansfeld region of Harz. Michalski was posted to JG53 in 1940. Leutnant Michalski was assigned to the Gruppenstab of 6./JG53. He gained his first victory on 31 March 1940, when he shot down a French Morane fighter over the French border. Michalski later participated in the Battle of Britain gaining eight victories. On 1 October 1940, he was appointed Adjutant of II./JG53. Operating over Russia, Michalski was to claim 13 further victories by the end of August 1941 to raise his victory total to 22. On 1 October 1941, Oberleutnant Michalski was appointed Staffelkapitän of 4./JG53 based at Leeuwarden in Holland. In late November, II./JG53 relocated to Sicily. Operating over Malta, Michalski was to become the most successful German fighter pilot in this area recording 26 victories. Michalski was appointed Gruppenkommandeur of II./JG53 on 1 June 1942. He also recorded his 30th victory the same day. Oberleutnant Michalski was awarded the Ritterkreuz for 41 victories on 4 September. On 15 October, Michalski was shot down in aerial combat with RAF Spitfire fighters off Marsaxxlokk Bay on his 500th combat mission. Wolf-Dietrich 'Fürst' Wilcke

Wolf-Dietrich 'Fürst' Wilcke was born on 11 March 1913 at Schrimm in Posen. He enrolled in the Wehrmacht in 1934 and initially served in a Cavalry Regiment. In 1935, Oberfärnrich Wilcke transferred to the newly formed Luftwaffe. He completed his flying training at Perleberg and joined JG132. In autumn of 1937 he became an instructor at the Jagdfliegerschule Werneuchen. In early 1939, Oberleutnant Wilcke was sent to Spain to serve with the Condor Legion. His time spent there was short and he was soon back in Germany serving with III./JG53 under the command of Werner Mölders.

On 18 September 1939, Hauptmann Wilcke was appointed Staffelkapitän and ordered to form 7./JG53 within the newly constituted III./JG53. He gained his first victory on 7 November when he shot down a French Potez 637 twinengined fighter over the Saar valley. On 18 May 1940, Wilcke became separated from his Staffel during combat with French Hawk 75 fighters. He was shot down but managed to bale out. He was captured but was soon released at the fall of France. Wilcke returned to JG53 and participated in the Battle of Britain. He was appointed Gruppenkommandeur of III./JG53 on 13 August 1940, following the death of Hauptmann Harro Harder (17 victories) in aerial combat. He nearly did not have the opportunity to take up the new position. During a late afternoon mission on 12 August, Wilcke's Bf-109E-4 suffered engine failure. He baled out into the sea and was very fortunate to be found in bright moonlight and rescued by a Do-18 twin-engine flying boat of the German air-sea rescue services. By early summer he had recorded 13 victories. Wilcke led III./JG53 during Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of Russia.

On 22 June 1941, the opening day of the invasion, III./JG53 were returning from its first mission against Russian airfields in Lithuania when it encountered a formation of I-15bis biplane fighters. In the ensuing combat Wilcke downed three of the fighters. He recorded two further victories later that day to take his victory total to 18. On 25 June, Wilcke was involved in a collision on take-off from Vilna in Bf109F-2 (W.Nr. 8104). Both aircraft involved in the incident were destroyed by fire. He was lucky to escape with minor injuries. Hauptmann Wilcke was awarded the Ritterkreuz on 6 August 1940 for 25 victories. In December 1941, III./JG53 were transferred to Sicily. Wilcke's victory tally had reached 32. Operating over Malta, he added four RAF Spitfire fighters to his score. In early May 1942, III./JG53 was ordered to North Africa. On 18 May 1942, Wilcke was transferred to JG3 operating on the Eastern front.

On 12 August, Major Wilcke was appointed Kommodore of JG3. He recorded his 100th victory on 6 September for which he was awarded the Eichenlaub (Nr 122) on 9 September. Wilcke participated in the Battle of Stalingrad, based at Pitomnik, where he directed day fighter operations over the city. During the summer offensive of 1942, under the command of Wilcke, the Geschwaderstab/JG3 recorded 137 victories of which Wilcke claimed 97 (39-135). During this time the unit reported only one pilot lost. In September alone, Wilcke claimed 32 victories, including four enemy aircraft shot down on 18 September (103-106), six on 24 September (111-116) and another four shot down on 24 September (117-120). When Russian forces encircled Stalingrad, the Geschwaderstab/JG3 was transferred to Morozovskaya-Öst, outside the pocket. Wilcke directed fighter escort missions for the transport aircraft attempting to supply the surrounded 6th German Army. He claimed five victories on 17 December (147-151). Wilcke was the fourth German fighter pilot to reach 150 victories. On 23 December, he was awarded the Schwerten (Nr 23) for 155 victories. On the same day, he led the unit to Morozovskaya-Süd to escape the advance of the Russian armoured spearhead. A further move followed to Tazinskaya on 3 January 1943 where the unit remained until after the end of the fighting in the Stalingrad pocket. During this time the unit claimed a further 25 victories for the loss in action of two pilots. Wilcke claimed 21 to raise his victory total to 156.

From March 1943, he led JG3 over the Kuban bridgehead. However, he had been forbidden to fly operationally and had to lead the unit from the ground. In May 1943, JG3 was withdrawn to Germany. On its return to Germany, the Geschwaderstab/JG3 was based at Mönchenglagbach. Oberst Wilcke was still under instructions not to fly combat missions. However, he began ignoring the orders in February 1944 and was able to record four victories over USAAF B-17 four-engined bombers and a single P-51 fighter. On 6 March, his machine Bf-109G-6 was damaged in aerial combat and Wilcke had to make an emergency landing at Neuruppin. Although his aircraft was destroyed, Wilcke escaped injury. On 23 March 1944, Wilcke led JG3 in an attack on a USAAF bomber formation near Braunschweig. During the ensuing combat, Wilcke shot down his 162nd, and last, victory, an escorting P-51 fighter, but was shot down near Schöppenstedt. He died in the wreckage of his Bf109G-6 (W.Nr. 160613) 'Black << + -'. It is thought he had become the victim of American aces Major Don Gentile (21.833 confirmed and 3 damaged victories) and Major John Godfrey (16.333 confirmed, 2 probale and 5 damaged victories) of the 336th Fighter Squadron, 4th Fighter Group, USAAF.

'Fürst' Wilcke was credited with 162 victories in 732 missions. He recorded 137 victories over the Eastern front. Of his 25 victories recorded over the Western front, four were four-engine bombers.

Stefan 'Steff' Litjens

Stefan 'Steff' Litjens was born on 13 October 1913 at Hasselt in Niederrhein. Following a pre-war fighter pilot's training, he was posted to JG53 in August 1937. At the outbreak of World War 2, Unteroffizier Litjens was serving with 4./JG53. On 16 October, Litjens was sent to Wiesbaden as a flight instructor to assist with the formation of II./JG53.

He remained at Wiesbaden until 4 November. Litjens recorded two victories during the French campaign. During the Battle of Britain, Litjens recorded four victories. Over the Eastern front, Litjens was to be particularly successful. He shot down five Russian fighters on 25 August 1941. On 11 September, Litjens shot down two Russian SB-2 twinengined bombers to record his 22nd and 23rd victories. Later that day, he engaged in aerial combat with Russian I-16 and I-18 fighters while escorting Ju 87 dive bombers in the Romanova area. During the dogfight, his Bf 109F-4 (W.Nr. 8408) was hit by return fire. He baled out of his stricken aircraft badly wounded landing in friendly territory. He was hospitalised at Riga but lost the sight from his right eye.

Oberfeldwebel Litjens returned to 4./JG53, now based in Sicily, in October 1942, despite his vision impairment. He flew missions over Malta before the unit was transferred to Tunisia. Here he claimed eight Allied aircraft shot down and flew many ground attack missions. Litjens was awarded the Ritterkreuz on 21 June 1943 for 32 victories. Following a lengthy period of leave, Litjens returned to 4./JG53 on 17 November 1943. The unit was now operating on Reichsverteidigung duties. On 22 February 1944, he shot down three USAAF B-17 four-engined bombers. He downed a further two B-17 bombers on 23 March. However, he was again shot down by return fire making an emergency landing in Bf109G-6 (W.Nr. 440 215) 'White 5+' near Gifhorn. He suffered an injury to his left eye which precluded any further combat duty. He remained with the unit until the end of the war and never stopped trying to have the decision to refrain him from combat overturned. Stefan Litjens died on 25 February 2002 aged 88.

'Steff' Litjens was credited with 38 victories in 444 missions. He recorded 17 victories over the Eastern front. Of his 21 Western front victories, five were four-engined bombers.

On 11 September, 1941 he lost his right eye after being shot down at Romanowa by an I-16 of the 191 IAP. Despite the handicap, he flew again in November 1942 at Malta, Tunisia, and home defense scoring another 14 victories. He scored a triple victory on 22 February, 1944, his 33rd, 34th & 35th; three B-17's while based at Vienna-Seyring. On 23 March, 1944, after downing two B-17's in 'White 5' near Braunschweig, he crashed injuring his left eye, ending his combat duties. 'White 5' seemed to be his favorite number as his E-3 in 1939 was also a 'White 5', Werk # 1244. 400 missions. 5 four engine bombers. 16 victories in the East. Photo Deceased 25 February, 2002.

He baled out of his stricken BF 109 G-2 (W.Nr.10 484), landing in the sea. He was rescued by a Do 24 three-engine flying boat of the German air-sea rescue service. In October 1942, II./JG53 were relocated to Tunisia. By the beginning of May 1943, Michalski had recorded eight further victories, including his 50th victory, a Spitfire shot down over the harbour of Bone, on 1 January 1943. Following the fall of Tunisia, II./JG53 relocated to bases in Sicily in May 1943. On 18 June, Michalski was shot down near Donnafucata in Sicily in Bf 109 G-6 (W.Nr. 16 362) in aerial combat with Spitfires. He baled out wounded, landing in the sea, from where he was rescued by the German air-sea rescue service and taken to a hospital in Ragusa.
La Marsa, II./JG53`s command post, March 1943

Michalski returned to JG53 in late August 1943. On 1 September, Major Michalski temporarily assumed command of JG53 when Kommodore, Oberst Günther von Maltzahn (68 victories, RK-EL) was forced into hospital with a severe bout of malaria. Von Maltzahn returned to the Geschwader on 28 September and Michalski returned to command II./JG53. In November 1943, II./JG53 was relocated yet again. Based in Austria the Gruppe operated on Reichsverteidigung duties. Michalski recorded his 60th victory on 2 November. On 24 April 1944, Michalski was appointed Kommodore of JGz.b.V based at Kassel in Germany. The unit was formed to control III./JG3, I./JG5, II./JG27, III./JG54 and II./JG53. On 1 May, he was shot down and wounded in Bf 109 G-6 (W.Nr. 440 232) in aerial combat. Following his recovery, Michalski was transferred to the Verbandsführerschule of the General de Jagdflieger on 20 May 1944. On 21 July, he was transferred to the Stabsstaffel of I./JG11. Michalski was appointed Kommodore of JG4 on 18 August 1944. Major Michalski was awarded the Eichenlaub (Nr. 667) on 25 November for 72 victories. He gained his 73rd, and last, victory on 8 March 1945 over the Eastern front. Michalski was involved in a motor vehicle accident on 22 February 1946. He died in hospital at Kaltenkirchen.

Hermann Neuhoff

Hermann Neuhoff was born on 11 April 1918 at Rheinhausen in Rheinland. He joined the Luftwaffe prior to World War 2 and trained as a fighter pilot. At the outbreak of World War 2, Neuhoff was serving with 3./JG53. On 3 October 1939, Unteroffizier Neuhoff was transferred to newly formed III./JG53 based at Wiesbaden-Erbenheim. He assigned to 7./JG53 under the command of Oberleutnant Wolf-Dietrich Wilcke (162 victories, RK-S, killed in action 23 March 1944).

He recorded his first victory on 2 March 1940 when he shot down a RAF Hurricane fighter southwest of Diedenhofen. He added a further four victories during the French campaign. He participated in the Battle of Britain gaining a further four victories. Operating over the Eastern front, Neuhoff gained considerable success. He recorded his 20th victory, a Russian DB-3 twin-engined bomber shot down on 4 August 1941 and his 30th, a Russian I-18 fighter shot down on 19 September. Neuhoff accompanied III./JG53 when it was relocated to the Mediterranean theatre in November 1941. Between 11 and 14 December, he claimed five RAF aircraft shot down in North Africa. Neuhoff then undertook a lengthy spell of instructing and attended an officer training course. In March 1942, Neuhoff returned to combat duty. III./JG53 was now based in Sicily operating over Malta. Leutnant Neuhoff claimed four RAF fighters shot down over and around the island operating with 7./JG53.

On 9 April, Neuhoff was appointed acting Staffelkapitän of 6./JG53, replacing Oberleutnant Helmut Belser (36 victories, RK, killed in a flying accident 19 June 1942) who had been transferred as Staffelkapitän of 8./JG53. On 10 April 1942, Neuhoff led his new Staffel over Malta in Bf 109F-4 (W.Nr. 7375) 'Yellow 1'. He led an attack on three RAF Spitfire fighters. During the subsequent combat Neuhoff was shot down. He baled out to become a prisoner of war. It is thought that Neuhoff had become the victim of Canadian ace Sgt Garth Horricks (8 destroyed, 0.333 probable and 6 damaged victories) of 185 Sqn, RAF.

However, returning pilots of JG53 reported that Neuhoff had been shot down by one of their own, Leutnant Werner Schöw (15 victories, killed in action 11 August 1942) of 1./JG53. Leutnant Neuhoff was awarded the Ritterkreuz on 19 June.
