Messerschmitt Bf 109 F-2 II./JG53 ((+- Heinz Bretnutz WNr 6674 France 1941 00

Profile's 0A-0B: Messerschmitt Bf109F-2, W.Nr. 6674, flown by Ritterkreuztrager Hptm. Heinz Bretnutz, Kommandeur of II./JG53 This aircraft was finished in an 02/71 scheme with the entire nose painted yellow, except for a Green 71 spinner backplate. Apart from the Kommandeur's insignia on the fuselage, the machine had been further personalised with the addition of a telescope mounted on the far right of the windscreen and the name 'Peter' under the cockpit. The aircraft is shown here with 30 victory bars, the last being a Spitfire claimed south of Dungeness on 3 May 1941. Hptm. Bretnutz claimed another six victories on the Channel Front before his unit transferred east to take part in 'Barbarossa'. On the first day of the invasion, 22 June 1941, Hptm. Bretnutz claimed his 37th victory, a Russian bomber, but had to make a forced landing and was seriously wounded. He was taken to hospital where one of his legs was amputated in an attempt to save his life, but he died on 27 June.

Twenty of the victory bars have been enclosed in a black border, perhaps to indicate that it was these which earlier earned him the Ritterkreuz, awarded on 20 October 1940.

The spinner has a standard white segment and a wide white band was painted round the rear fuselage. None of Kaminskis victories was recorded on the rudder. The undersurfaces were finished in 76.

Photo 01: The Bf 109F-4 flown by Hptm. Herbert Kaminski, Kommandeur of I./JG53 on Comiso airfield, early 1942. This Gruppe had previously been led by the well-known escaper, Franz von Werra, and Kaminski took over the Gruppe in November 1941 after von Werra was killed during a routine test flight in the Netherlands. Kaminski had previously led the Zerstbrer Gruppe I./ZG26 and received the Ritterkreuz on 6 August for his successes against ground targets in the campaigns in Crete and Russia, at which time he had also claimed five aerial victories. Some sources have speculated that the two pale stripes on the right wingtip may have been some form of special recognition marking, but they are more likely to be evidence of a recent repair.

All Stab markings were in black with a white outline, and to indicate this aircraft's reserve status there is a small number '2' (just visible) in the chevron instead of the usual inner triangle.

Photo 01: Major Gunther von Maltzahn - seen here in the cockpit of his aircraft - first joined the German cavalry as a member of Reiter Regiment 16 in 1931. He volunteered for the Luftwaffe on its formation and was accepted in 1935. On 9 October 1940, just eight days before his 30th birthday, von Maltzahn replaced Obstlt. Hans-Jürgen von Cramon-Taubadel as Kommodore of JG53. On 1 December Major von Maltzahn shot down his 12th victim, a Hurricane, and more in recognition for his leadership as Kommodore of JG53 than for his victories, was awarded the Ritterkreuz on 30 December.

Photo 01: Although displaying a virtually standard factory camouflage finish and Stab markings, this machine is interesting as it shows the nose and spinner have been repainted. Before Operation 'Barbarossa', all aircraft of Stab/JG53 had their spinners and engine cowlings painted Yellow 04, but this was later overpainted in the colors 02, 70, 74 and 75, as depicted in this profile. Unusually, it is believed that the kill markings on the rudder of this machine were carried on the port side only. Note the canopy framing was Green 70.

Profile: Flown by the commander of III./JG53 this aircraft was photographed at Mannheim-Sandhofen in March 1941. The finish seems to have suffered from heavy polishing which has partially removed the mottle. Despite of that, the aircfraft does appear rather dirty as well. It's hard to tell whether the panel in front of the windscreen was RLM71 or RLM04 but photos of Jürgen Harders famous "Chevron Circle" shows the panel as RLM04 and it seems likely that all the aircraft of the Stabschwarm would use the same scheme. The Wrk.Nr of this aircraft is not known but the camoflage of RLM02/71 in the same pattern as used for the Bf109E during 1940 is identical to other aircraft in the Erla built 80xx series.

The Stab symbols are those of the Kommandeur and the vertical bar aft of the Balkenkreuz was the newly introduced symbol for III. Gruppe. Personal markings include the 12 white victory tabs on the rudder and the small 'Ww' motif under the windscreen which represented the pilot's initials. Photo 01: Contrary to popular belief, the Bf-109 was not fitted with any device for starting the engine by purely electrical means and relied on ground grew turning a handle which engaged with an inertia starter. Winding the handle turned a flywheel under the engine cowling and, once a certain speed had been attained, the engine fired. As soon as the engine started, the starter clutch was engaged by pushing in a control handle located in the cockpit and the propeller began to turn. Interestingly, the inertia starter was designed by the Eclipse company in the USA and was obtained by the German aircraft industry under licence. Here, ground staff help to start a Bf 109F of JG53. This particular machine is believed to have been flown by Hptm. Wolf-Dietrich Wilke, Kommandeur of III. Gruppe.

Photo's 01-02: On 27 August 1941, III./JG53 claimed 19 Russian aircraft destroyed, increasing the Gruppe's total number of victories from 496 to 515 and thereby exceeding the anxiously anticipated 500. On this occasion, a report was broadcast by the Propaganda Abteilung (note the microphone), during which the Kommandeur, Hptm. Wolf-Dietrich Wilcke, who may himself have been responsible for the Gruppe's 500th victory, was interviewed. Wilke's claim on this occasion was his 29th.

Heinz Bretnutz

Heinz 'Pietzsch' Bretnütz

Heinz 'Pietzsch' Bretnütz was born on 24 January 1914 at Mannheim. From autumn 1938 until March 1939, Leutnant Bretnütz served with 2.J88 in Spain. He gained two victories in the Spanish Civil War to record J88's 266th and 278th victories. On 6 June 1939, Bretnütz was awarded the Spanienkreuz in Gold mit Schwertern. On his return to Germany, Bretnütz was posted to 6./JG53. He claimed his first victory of World War 2 on 25 September 1939, when he shot down a French Curtiss Hawk fighter near Bienwald. On 31 March 1940, he shot down two French Morane fighters near Saargemünd to record his fourth and fifth victories.

Bretnütz was appointed Staffelkapitän of 6./JG53 on 24 June 1940. During the Battle of Britain, he was to become one of the most successful German fighter pilots. On 20 October, he shot down a RAF Hurricane fighter to record his 20th victory in World War 2 but received damage to his Bf109E-1 (W.Nr.4112) Black << necessitating an emergency landing at St Inglevert in France. Hauptmann Bretnütz was awarded the Ritterkreuz on 22 October for 20 aerial victories and 12 balloons shot down. On 10 October 1940, Bretnütz was appointed Gruppenkommandeur of II./JG53. He recorded his 30th victory of World War 2 on 3 May 1941. Bretnütz led II./JG53 during the invasion of Russia. He had 34 victories to his credit at this time.

On 22 June 1941, Bretnütz shot down a Russian SB-2 twin-engine bomber. His Bf 109F-2 (W.Nr. 6674) 'Chevron Triangle' was hit in the engagement however, necessitating an emergency landing in the area of the front lines between Erzvilkas and Nemaksciai. Badly wounded, he was rescued by farmers who hid him from retreating Russian troops. He was finally handed over to advancing German troops on 26 June. Hospitalised, he had his left leg amputated but died of complications from the operation on 27 June.

'Pietzsch' Bretnütz was credited with 35 victories in 244 missions. He recorded 2 victories during the Spanish Civil War and one over the Eastern front. Additionally, he claimed 12 balloons shot down.

Herbert Kaminski

Herbert Kaminski was born on 24 May 1905 at Ohmswalde in the Ortelsburg region of Ostpreußen. In 1935, he was serving as a policeman but then transferred to the Luftwaffe. Kaminski served in the Spanish Civil War as a courier pilot during 1937 and 1938. On his return to Germany he underwent conversion training to become a fighter pilot. On completion of his training, Kaminski was posted to ZG26.

On 1 May 1940, he was appointed Staffelkapitän of 2./ZG26. He claimed his first victory during the French campaign. During August and September, he flew over 50 missions during the Battle of Britain claiming two RAF fighters shot down. On 18 August, his Bf 110 Zerstörer twin-engine fighter was badly damaged in aerial combat with RAF Hurricane fighters over England. He was forced to ditch his aircraft in the English Channel. He and his gunner survived the ditching and were rescued by a German naval minesweeper. Kaminski led 2./ZG76 during the Balkans campaign. He was shot down during a ground attack mission over Serbia and, after making an emergency landing, was captured and imprisoned. After 11 days in captivity and constantly threatened with being shot he was freed by German troops. Soon back in action, Kaminski undertook many ground attack missions destroying several tanks and three artillery pieces.

Over Crete, he shot down a RAF Gladiator biplane fighter. On 22 May 1941, Hauptmann Kaminski was appointed Gruppenkommandeur of I./ZG26. He led the Gruppe in the invasion of Russia. Performing mainly ground attack missions on Russian airfields, the Gruppe destroyed 51 aircraft on the ground in addition to claiming 11 aircraft in aerial combat.

Kaminski was awarded the Ritterkreuz on 6 August for five victories. Kaminski was transferred to the staff of the General der Jagdflieger as an advisor on Zerstörer operations. On 1 November 1941, Major Kaminski was appointed Gruppenkommandeur of I./JG53 based in Sicily. He shot down a RAF fighter over Malta on 20 December. In May 1942, I./JG53 was relocated to the Eastern front. He shot down a Russian LaGG-3 fighter on 28 June. On 24 July, I./JG53 was transferred to the southern sector of the Eastern front. During the transfer flight, Kaminski's Bf109G-2 (W.Nr. 13481) <<+ developed engine trouble. In attempting a forced-landed at Taganrog-North his aircraft crashed resulting in injuries that saw him hospitalised for a time.

Kaminski was appointed Gruppenkommandeur of II./ZG 76 on 5 October 1943 and led the Gruppe until 9 August 1944 on Reichsverteidigung operations. He would record a USAAF B-17 four-engine bomber shot down during his time with the unit. He relinquished command of the unit on 9 August 1944. In December 1944, Kaminski was appointed Kommandeur of Flugzeugführerschule A/B 41 at Frankfurt in Oder. He served in this role until the end of the war.

Kaminski was killed in an automobile accident at Garmisch on 18 July 1971. Herbert Kaminski was credited with seven victories in approximately 300 missions. He recorded one victory over the Eastern front. Of the six victories recorded over the Western front, one was a four engine bomber.

Franz 'Nawratil' Schieß

Franz 'Nawratil' Schieß (also spelt Schiehs) was born on 25 February 1921 at Worth near St Polten in Austria. He participated in the Polish campaign as an Arbeitsdienstmann before transferring to the Luftwaffe and undergoing fighter pilot training. Schie? was posted to JG53, based on the Channel front, on 8 March 1941. Leutnant Schie? was assigned to the Geschwaderstab, where he was appointed Adjutant under the tutelage of Gunther Freiherr von Maltzahn (68 victories, RK-EL). On 22 June 1941, Schie? recorded his first victories on the opening day of Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of Russia, when he shot down a Russian I-153 biplane fighter on a morning mission and a DB-3 twin-engine bomber in the afternoon. By early August, he had increased his tally to 14. In early August, JG53 were withdrawn from the Eastern front and, following re-equipment, deployed to the Mediterranean theatre. From bases in Sicily, Schie? operated over Malta recording 11 victories, one of which was not confirmed, including his 20th victory, a RAF Spitfire fighter shot down on 18 July 1942. At the end of November, JG53 was operating over Tunisia. Schie? continued his success, gaining a further 13 victories, including his first fourengine bomber, a USAAF B-17 shot down near Bizerte on 29 January 1943 for his 36th victory. On 16 February 1943, Schie? was appointed Staffelkapitan of 8./JG53. He successfully led the unit through the campaigns in Tunisia, Sicily and Italy. He recorded his 50th victory, a USAAF P-38 twin-engine fighter near Pantelleria, on 21 May. Oberleutnant Schie? was awarded the Ritterkreuz on 21 June for 55 victories. He was then sent on a lengthy leave. Returning to the front in August, Schie? shot down 12 enemy aircraft in 11 days of which seven were P-38 twin-engine fighters. Schie? failed to return from a mission on 2 September 1943. He led a scramble against a USAAF bomber formation over Mt Vesuvius. Schie? attacked the fighter escort and a dogfight developed extending over the sea to the island of Ischia. It is thought that Schie?, in Bf-109 G-6 (W.Nr. 160 022) 'Black 1', fell victim to the USAAF P-38 twin-engine fighter escort.

'Nawratil' Schieß was credited with 67 victories in 657 missions. He recorded 14 victories over the Eastern front. Of his 53 victories recorded over the Western front, three were four-engine bombers, 17 were P-38 twin-engine fighters and 18 were Spitfire fighters.

Wolf-Dietrich 'Fürst' Wilcke

Wolf-Dietrich 'Fürst' Wilcke was born on 11 March 1913 at Schrimm in Posen. He enrolled in the Wehrmacht in 1934 and initially served in a Cavalry Regiment. In 1935, Oberfärnrich Wilcke transferred to the newly formed Luftwaffe. He completed his flying training at Perleberg and joined JG132. In autumn of 1937 he became an instructor at the Jagdfliegerschule Werneuchen. In early 1939, Oberleutnant Wilcke was sent to Spain to serve with the Condor Legion. His time spent there was short and he was soon back in Germany serving with III./JG53 under the command of Werner Mölders.

On 18 September 1939, Hauptmann Wilcke was appointed Staffelkapitän and ordered to form 7./JG53 within the newly constituted III./JG53. He gained his first victory on 7 November when he shot down a French Potez 637 twinengined fighter over the Saar valley. On 18 May 1940, Wilcke became separated from his Staffel during combat with French Hawk 75 fighters. He was shot down but managed to bale out. He was captured but was soon released at the fall of France. Wilcke returned to JG53 and participated in the Battle of Britain. He was appointed Gruppenkommandeur of III./JG53 on 13 August 1940, following the death of Hauptmann Harro Harder (17 victories) in aerial combat. He nearly did not have the opportunity to take up the new position. During a late afternoon mission on 12 August, Wilcke's Bf-109E-4 suffered engine failure. He baled out into the sea and was very fortunate to be found in bright moonlight and rescued by a Do-18 twin-engine flying boat of the German air-sea rescue services. By early summer he had recorded 13 victories. Wilcke led III./JG53 during Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of Russia.

On 22 June 1941, the opening day of the invasion, III./JG53 were returning from its first mission against Russian airfields in Lithuania when it encountered a formation of I-15bis biplane fighters. In the ensuing combat Wilcke downed three of the fighters. He recorded two further victories later that day to take his victory total to 18. On 25 June, Wilcke was involved in a collision on take-off from Vilna in Bf109F-2 (W.Nr. 8104). Both aircraft involved in the incident were destroyed by fire. He was lucky to escape with minor injuries. Hauptmann Wilcke was awarded the Ritterkreuz on 6 August 1940 for 25 victories. In December 1941, III./JG53 were transferred to Sicily. Wilcke's victory tally had reached 32. Operating over Malta, he added four RAF Spitfire fighters to his score. In early May 1942, III./JG53 was ordered to North Africa. On 18 May 1942, Wilcke was transferred to JG3 operating on the Eastern front.

On 12 August, Major Wilcke was appointed Kommodore of JG3. He recorded his 100th victory on 6 September for which he was awarded the Eichenlaub (Nr 122) on 9 September. Wilcke participated in the Battle of Stalingrad, based at Pitomnik, where he directed day fighter operations over the city. During the summer offensive of 1942, under the command of Wilcke, the Geschwaderstab/JG3 recorded 137 victories of which Wilcke claimed 97 (39-135). During this time the unit reported only one pilot lost. In September alone, Wilcke claimed 32 victories, including four enemy aircraft shot down on 18 September (103-106), six on 24 September (111-116) and another four shot down on 24 September (117-120). When Russian forces encircled Stalingrad, the Geschwaderstab/JG3 was transferred to Morozovskaya-Öst, outside the pocket. Wilcke directed fighter escort missions for the transport aircraft attempting to supply the surrounded 6th German Army. He claimed five victories on 17 December (147-151). Wilcke was the fourth German fighter pilot to reach 150 victories. On 23 December, he was awarded the Schwerten (Nr 23) for 155 victories. On the same day, he led the unit to Morozovskaya-Süd to escape the advance of the Russian armoured spearhead. A further move followed to Tazinskaya on 3 January 1943 where the unit remained until after the end of the fighting in the Stalingrad pocket. During this time the unit claimed a further 25 victories for the loss in action of two pilots. Wilcke claimed 21 to raise his victory total to 156.

From March 1943, he led JG3 over the Kuban bridgehead. However, he had been forbidden to fly operationally and had to lead the unit from the ground. In May 1943, JG3 was withdrawn to Germany. On its return to Germany, the Geschwaderstab/JG3 was based at Mönchenglagbach. Oberst Wilcke was still under instructions not to fly combat missions. However, he began ignoring the orders in February 1944 and was able to record four victories over USAAF B-17 four-engined bombers and a single P-51 fighter. On 6 March, his machine Bf-109G-6 was damaged in aerial combat and Wilcke had to make an emergency landing at Neuruppin. Although his aircraft was destroyed, Wilcke escaped injury. On 23 March 1944, Wilcke led JG3 in an attack on a USAAF bomber formation near Braunschweig. During the ensuing combat, Wilcke shot down his 162nd, and last, victory, an escorting P-51 fighter, but was shot down near Schöppenstedt. He died in the wreckage of his Bf109G-6 (W.Nr. 160613) 'Black << + -'. It is thought he had become the victim of American aces Major Don Gentile (21.833 confirmed and 3 damaged victories) and Major John Godfrey (16.333 confirmed, 2 probale and 5 damaged victories) of the 336th Fighter Squadron, 4th Fighter Group, USAAF.

'Fürst' Wilcke was credited with 162 victories in 732 missions. He recorded 137 victories over the Eastern front. Of his 25 victories recorded over the Western front, four were four-engine bombers.
