Photo 01: Two different aircraft from JG52, both displaying the characteristic staff marking and numeral combination much used by this Geschwader. The Gruppe bar on the rear fuselage of one of the aircraft under the gantry identifies it as belonging to II./JG52, Note that the II. Gruppe aircraft still retain their snow camouflage. Interestingly, the highest known example of the chevron and numeral combination is <6.

The cowling was originally all yellow but has been toned down by repainting the upper section light blue, over which a new camouflage pattern is being applied. The rest of the machine appears to be finished in a standard 02/74/75/76 scheme. Note that this aircraft carries a pair of under wing MG 151 machine-guns.

Me109G-2 'Black Double Chevron' of Stab II./JG52. This plane was flown by Gruppenkommandeur Hauptmann Johannes 'Macki' Steinhoff (176 victories, Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords) from Tuzov, a frontline airfield near the Don Bend in Southern Russia in late August and early September 1942.

Steinhoff later commanded JG77 in the Mediterranean, rose to command the Me-262 equipped JG7 and was also participated in the 'fighter pilot's revolt' against Goring in 1945. After being relieved of his post as Geschwaderkommodore he went to Galland's JV44 and was badly wounded in a take-off accident on April 16 1945 which left him badly disfigured for the rest of his life.

Steinhoff joined the post-war Bundesluftwaffe and rose through its ranks, eventually leading the NATO council for several years. He was awarded the German Great Cross of Merit, the US Legion of Honor and the Commander's Cross of the French Legion d'Honneur for his services to Western Germany and the NATO. Steinhoff passed away in 1994. Today the German Jagdgeschwader 73 is carrying the traditional name 'Steinhoff'.

Profile 01: Messerschmitt Bf 109F-4, W.Nr. 7079, flown by Major Hanns Trubenbach, Kommodore of JG52, October 1941 The original 74/75/76 factory finish on this machine has been completely resprayed Green 70 with evidence of the earlier scheme remaining only around the fuselage Balkenkreuz and a masked-off rectangle containing the W.Nr. on the fin. A completely yellow cowling has been retained and the position of the yellow fuselage band ahead of the Balkenkreuz is unusual but by no means unique. The Green 70 spinner lacks the usual white segment.

Helmut Bennemann

Helmut Bennemann was born on 16 March 1915 at Wanne-Eickel. In June 1940, Bennemann was serving as Adjutant to I./JG52. He gained his first victory on 26 August, when he shot down a RAF Spitfire fighter near Dover. On 15 September, Bennemann shot down three RAF Hurricane fighters to record his sixth through eighth victories. On 27 April 1941, he was appointed Staffelkapitan of 3./JG52. When I./JG52 was transferred to the Eastern front in September 1941, Bennemann had recorded 12 victories. On 14 June 1942, Bennemann was appointed Gruppenkommandeur of I./JG52. On 3 September, he claimed two Russian aircraft shot down (50-51). Hauptmann Bennemann was awarded the Ritterkreuz on 2 October for 52 victories. On 28 December, Bennemann shot down six Russian aircraft to record (67-72). Bennemann was wounded in the explosion of an incendiary bomb on 10 May 1943 resulting in his withdrawal from combat duty for some months. He had 88 victories to his credit at this time. Bennemann was appointed Kommodore of JG53 on 9 November 1943, replacing Oberst Gunther von Maltzahn (68 victories, RK-EL) who left JG53 to fulfill a staff role. On 25 April 1944, he shot down a USAAF B-24 four-engine bomber over Bologna to record his 90th victory.

However, his Bf109G-6 (W.Nr. 163314) 'Black <3' was hit by return fire and Bennemann was wounded. He baled out successfully. In June 1944, Bennemann led the Geschwaderstab of JG53 on a short sojourn to the Eastern front, to direct the supply missions for the relief of the city of Vilna. The unit departed Russia for Wunstorf near Hanover in Germany on 22 July. From August 1944, Bennemann led JG53 on Reichsverteidigung duties, initially from bases in France, then from bases in Germany. He recorded three victories in October 1944 to bring his final victory total to 93.

Helmut Bennemann was credited with 93 victories in over 400 missions. He recorded 77 victories over the Eastern front. Included in his total are at least 10 Il-2 Sturmoviks.
