In Russia, he was shot down on 16 July 1941 and although posted missing for several hours, returned to his unit. On 3 August 1941, by which time he had claimed 38 victories, his aircraft was deliberately rammed and Sochatzy became a prisoner. The photograph shows Sochatzy with his chief mechanic and his 'White 1' in France shortly before the Russian campaign. Painted under the cockpit is the name 'Tizi'.

Profile 00: Messerschmitt Bf 109F-4 'Yellow 4', W. Nr. 13220 flown by Ofw. Eberhard von Boremski of 9./JG3, May 1942 The basis for this camouflage scheme may have been that the aircraft was one of a batch originally due for service in North Africa. The camouflage was adapted for the terrain in Russia with large angular patches being added over the original camouflage, believed to have been RLM 79 Sandgelb on the uppersurfaces and RLM 78 Hellblau on the undersurfaces. The additional colours may have been RLM 70 and RLM 75. The tip of the spinner, lower engine cowling, wingtip undersurface and fuselage band were all in Gelb 04, as was the aircraft number and III. Gruppe bar. A total of 43 white victory bars appeared only on the port side of the rudder and the name 'Maxi' was painted under the cockpit.

Photo 01-02: This unusual camouflage scheme is believed to have been applied to all the Bf 109Fs of 9./JG3 and possibly the aircraft of the whole III. Gruppe, although it is not known whether this was a specially requested factory-applied finish or was carried out by the Gruppe itself while refitting in Germany. 'Yellow 4', WNr. 13220, was flown by Ofw. Eberhard von Boremski.

Viktor Bauer, Staffelkapitan of 9./JG3, Frolov, near Stalingrad, June 1942 As with 'Yellow 4' shown previously, this aircraft is finished in a hybrid scheme of RLM 70 and 75 over RLM 79 Sandgelb but is depicted a month later when Obl. Bauer had 65 victories, as marked in the rudder. It is believed the undersurfaces were RLM 78.

Photo 02: The starboard side of Viktor Bauer's Bf 109F-4, 'Yellow 7', shows that the camouflage pattern of all III. Gruppe aircraft was almost identical, lending weight to the theory that perhaps this scheme was factory applied. It is known that when aircraft were destined for delivery to a particular unit there was some contact between the unit and the factory when special modifications to equipment, armament and camouflage were requested. This practice was abolished later in the war.

At this time, Bauer was credited with 91 aerial victories plus nine destroyed on the ground. Bauer, who received his Knight's Cross on 30 July 1941, received the Oak Leaves on 26 July 1942 but was wounded on 10 August and withdrawn from combat. He then served with various training and quasi-operational replacement units and shot down four aircraft in the West before the end of the war. Meanwhile, on 4 September 1942, this aircraft was hit by anti-aircraft fire which wounded the pilot, Ritterkreuztrager Obl. Emil Bitsch, and resulted in the aircraft being destroyed.

Knights Cross

Viktor Bauer

Viktor Bauer was born on 19 September 1915 at Löcknitz in the Randow region of Vorpommern. He joined the Luftwaffe in 1936 with the rank of Fahnenjunker. Following the completion of his fighter pilot training, he was posted to I./JG2. On 1 March 1940, Leutnant Bauer was serving with 2./JG77.

Bauer participated in the French campaign with the unit and was to gain his first aerial victory over Belgium on 15 May, when he shot down a RAF Hurricane fighter near Brügge. He gained one further victory during the French campaign serving with 1./JG77, when he shot down another Hurricane near Cambrai on 18 May. Bauer served in the Battle of Britain. By November 1940, he was serving with 9./JG3.

He gained one victory during the aerial battles over England to raise his victory total to three. On 5 February 1941, he claimed his 4th victory, a RAF Hurricane, over the Channel. This would prove to be last victory gained over the Western front. Shortly before the invasion of Russia began, Bauer was appointed Staffelkapitän of 9./JG3. In June 1941, he claimed 15 Russian aircraft shot down, including five Russian SB-2 twin-engine bombers claimed on 26 June for his 7th through 11th victories. He claimed 17 victories in July, including five Russian DB-3 twin-engine bombers on 12 July (26-30). Oberleutnant Bauer was awarded the Ritterkreuz on 30 July for 36 victories. On 23 July, Bauer was badly wounded in aerial combat with Russian bombers but was able to make an emergency landing in his Bf 109F-2 (W.Nr. 8987). He was to spend many months in hospital finally returning to combat duty in February 1942. Bauer recorded his 40th victory on 18 February followed by his 50th on 4 April. On 22 May, he claimed four Russian I-61 fighters shot down (57–60). He claimed a further four victories on 30 June (66-69). Bauer was spectacularly successful in July 1942 recording 33 victories during the month. Five times he shot down four enemy aircraft in a day and twice recorded five victories in a day. On 25 July, he claimed four victories (99-102). He was awarded the Eichenlaub (Nr 107) the next day. On 9 August, he claimed his 106th victory but one day later his Bf109F-4 (WNr. 13241) was damaged by enemy fire and Bauer wounded. He successfully carried out an emergency landing.

Following his recovery, Bauer was transferred as a Staffelkapitän to Ergänzungs-Jagdgruppe Ost. On 1 July 1943, Major Bauer was appointed Gruppenkommandeur of Ergänzungs-Jagdgruppe Ost, a position he was to hold until 4 November 1944. On 1 December 1944, Oberst Bauer was appointed Kommodore of EJG1. Bauer served in this role until the end of the war. Bauer died on 13 December 1969 at Bad Homburg.

Viktor Bauer was credited with 106 victories in approximately 400 missions. He recorded 102 of his victories over the Eastern front, including 27 Il-2 Sturmoviks.

Kurt Sochatzy

Kurt Sochatzy was born on 5 February 1915 at Schlo? Pragerhof near Marburg in the Drau region of Austria. He joined the Austrian Luftstreitkrafte in 1935. Following the German annexation of Austria in 1938, Sochatzy transferred to the Luftwaffe serving with I./JG138 from July. In November, I./JG138 was redesignated I./JG134. In February 1939, Sochatzy joined Condor Legion in support of the Nationalist cause in the Spanish Civil War. Leutnant Sochatzy was assigned to 3.Staffel of J88. He was awarded the Spanienkreuz in Bronze mit Schwerten for his accomplishments in that conflict. On his return to Germany, Sochatzy was transferred to I./JG76 in July 1939. He participated in the Polish campaign with the unit earning promotion to the rank of Oberleutnant. In January 1940, Sochatzy was appointed Adjutant of Jagdfliegerschule 5. Later, he was appointed Staffelkapitan of 3./JFS5, where he trained future Experten Hans-Joachim Marseille (158 victories, RK-Br, killed in action 30 September 1942), Walter Nowotny (258 victories, RK-Br, killed in action 8 November 1944) and Hans Strelow (68 victories, RK-EL, killed in action 22 May 1942). Sochatzy was appointed Staffelkapitan of 7./JG3, based on the Channel front, on 15 December 1940. He led the unit during Operation Barbarossa, the invasion of Russia. On 26 June, he claimed his first victory, when he shot down a Russian SB-2 twin-engine bomber. Sochatzy claimed three enemy aircraft shot down on 30 June to raise his victory total to five. In July, he claimed 30 victories, including three Russian SB-2 twin-engine bombers shot down on 6 July to record his eighth through 10th victories, five Russian twin-engine bombers on 9 July (13-17), his 20th victory on 12 July, when he shot down a Russian I-16 fighter and five Russian DB-3 twin-engine bombers shot down on 23 July (27-31). However, on 16 July, after shooting down two Russian SB-3 twin-engine bombers, he was forced to make an emergency landing in his Bf 109F-2 W.Nr. 9612 (W12+I) behind enemy lines. Sochatzy was initially reported missing but made his way back to his unit.

On 3 August 1941, in combat with Russian Il-2 ground-attack aircraft, Sochatzy was shot down in Bf109F-2 (W.Nr. 8217) (W9+). He baled out of his stricken aircraft but was then captured by Russian troops on landing. Sochatzy was awarded the Ritterkreuz on 12 August 1941 in absentia for 38 aerial victories in addition to 27 aircraft and two trains destroyed on the ground. He returned to Germany in September 1947.

Kurt Sochatzy was credited with 38 victories in 180 missions. He recorded 35 victories over the Eastern front.

He claimed 18 victories in March 1942, including his 10th, a Russian I-61 fighter, on 6 March, three Russian I-301 fighters shot down on 17 March to record his 15th through 17th victories and two more I-61s shot down on 20 March (19-20). On 1 April 1942, Oberfeldwebel We?ling was transferred to 3./JG3. On 22 June, he shot down four Russian MiG-1 fighters (35-38). On 29 June, We?ling claimed his 40th victory, when he shot down a Russian Il-2 Sturmovik ground attack aircraft, but was then shot down by Russian ground fire necessitating an emergency landing in Bf109F-4 (W.Nr. 10222) behind enemy lines, south of Belayev. Despite being wounded, We?ling succeeded in evading capture, returning to German lines several days later. On 17 July, he claimed three enemy aircraft shot down (45-47) and repeated the feat on 21 July (48-50). On 28 August, We?ling claimed two Russian fighters shot down (59-60). Oberfeldwebel We?ling was awarded the Ritterkreuz on 4 September for 62 victories.

We?ling was transferred to Erganzungs-Jagdgruppe Ost for a spell of instructing. Here, he also received promotion to the rank of Leutnant. On 1 June 1943, We?ling was transferred to 10./JG3 based in Italy. He shot down two USAAF B-24 four-engine bombers on 2 July (68-69). On 12 July, We?ling claimed three RAF Spitfires shot down over Sicily (65-67). We?ling was appointed Staffelkapitan of 10./JG3 on 17 July 1943. On 21 July, he was badly wounded by bomb fragments during an air raid on his airfield at Leverano. On his recovery We?ling was appointed Staffelkapitan of 11./JG3. At the end of September 1943, IV./JG3 was relocated to Germany to perform Reichsverteidigung duties. We?ling had 70 victories to his credit at this time. During early April 1944, he was particularly successful against USAAF four-engine raids claiming three B-17s shot down on 11 April (78-80) and nine in total up to 18 April. On 19 April 1944, We?ling was shot down and killed in aerial combat near Eschwege in Bf-109G-6 (W.Nr. 412052). He was posthumously awarded the Eichenlaub (Nr 530) on 20 July.

Otto Weßling was credited with 83 victories in approximately 500 missions. He claimed 56 victories over the Eastern front, including eight Il-2 Sturmoviks. Of the 27 victories he recorded over the Western front, 15 were four-engine bombers. In addition he claimed six aircraft destroyed on the ground.
