Profile 01: Messerschmitt Bf 109F.4 of Stab II./JG2, late 1942 This Sf 109 F-4 was finished in the usual scheme of the period, consisting of 74/75/76 camouflage colors with yellow identification areas under the nose and on the rudder, but had an interesting set of Stab markings in black edged in white.

Photo 01: Believed to have been photographed in late 1942 when the Gruppe was converting to the Fw-190, this Bf 109F-4 belonged to the Stab of II./JG2.Also shown are the Fw-190s of 6./JG2 which at that time was commanded by Ritterkreuzträger Lt. Erich Rudorffer bachground.

Photo 01: Another view of the same Bf 109F of JG2 taken later in 1942. The identity of the pilot of this aircraft is not known for certain, although some sources believe it may have been one of the aircraft flown by Oblt. Rudolf Pflanz. Interestingly, however, identical markings are known to have been carried on an Fw-190 allocated to Lt. Hubert van Greim, son of Generalfeldmarschall Robert Ritter van Greim who, in the last weeks of the war replaced Goring as Commander-in-Chief of the Luftwaffe.

Photo 01: By 1941 the standard system of Stab markings as prescribed pre-war was being modified to suit units' particular requirements. As a general rule, while JG26 tended to mark its Stab aircraft with horizontal bars used together with a letter, or letters, based on the pilots' names, JG2 seems to have modified the standard chevron and bar system in a variety of ingenious ways. These Stab markings, seen on a Bf 109F in 1942, are very similar to those carried by Oblt. Rudolf Pflanz when Technical Officer of JG2..
