Photo 01-02: An important development in 1942 was the expansion of the Luftwaffe's Schlachtflieger, or ground-attack force. However, proper control and direction was lacking for, although Luftwaffe aircraft had been used in the ground-attack role since the early days of the war, there was no separate organization controlling them as in the case of other units. Even in January 1942, when Schlachtgeschwader 1 was formed from II./LG2, it first came under the control of the General der Jagdflieger who was little interested in ground-attack and failed to ensure its proper development. In April, Sch. G 1 was ordered to Southern Russia and, after commencing operations with Luftflotte 4 in early May, flew a total of 1,467 sorties during the month 1,028 of these being by Bf 109s. This Bf 109E-7 of 5 Staffel I./Sch.G1 was coded 'White U' was flown by Staffelkaptain Georg Dorfell.
