Photo 03: Bf 109s of I.(J)/LG2 at Calais-Marek. The role of the Lehrgeschwader is frequently confused with that of an operational training unit, whereas in fact all pilots were already fully trained, highly experienced and frequently highly decorated. The original task of the Lehrgeschwader was to develop operational tactics and then demonstrate how these tactics should be employed in combat. Thus a Lehrgeschwader may be more accurately described as an Operational Development Wing, but from the beginning of the war operational requirements dictated that these units were retained at the front where they were employed as regular operational units. As a means of identifying their special instructional status, however, personnel serving with the Lehrtruppen der Luftwaffe wore an ornate letter 'L' on the shoulder straps of their uniforms.

Apart from the top hat emblem of 2. Staffel on the rear fuselage, this machine appears to lack most of the colouRGul refinements normally associated with operational units and even the spinner has been left in plain green.

Although a fighter Staffel, from September 1940 some of the unit's aircraft were converted to operate in the Jabo role but could be employed purely as fighters as the situation demanded. A large number of the Gruppe's pilots had earlier flown with the Condor Legion in Spain and theZylinderhut (top hat) unit badge of 2.(J)/LG2 applied to the rear fuselage was based on the insignia of 2./J88

Photo 01: The church spire in the distance identifies this as Calais-Marek airfield where the fighters of 3(J)./LG 2 are preparing for a mass take-off. On the rudder of the Bf 109E-3 at left it can be seen that only the rear half carries yellow paint, a not uncommon practice on aircraft of this unit. Later in the war the church was bombed by the USAAF during a raid on the airfield.

Ground crew obscure the fuselage markings on the nearest machine, but it appears to carry a Stab chevron ahead of the fuselage Balkenkreuz. The I.Gruppe of LG2 often flew as escort for the fighter-bombers of II. Gruppe.

In the foreground, 'Brown 11', in similar fashion to other aircraft of the unit, has only the rear half of the rudder painted yellow. The speckled appearance of its upper surfaces are not a mottled paint scheme but due to the sunlight filtering through the branches and camouflage netting. Not the unknown badge behind the fuselage cross.

Profile 00: Messerschmitt Bf 109E-7 WNr. 2058 from 3./(J)LG 2 flown by Uffz. August Klick. 'Brown 2' forced landed at Sheerness is a town located beside the mouth of the River Medway on the north-west corner of the Isle of Sheppey in north Kent, England on the afternoon of 15th September 1940 when the engine seized following combat with British fighters. The upper surfaces were finished in what were described as a 'cloudy grey' fuselage with 'battleship grey' wings suggesting a combination of 02 and one or more of the unit mixed greys known to have been used during this period. The spinner, cowling and rudder were painted yellow and the brown aircraft number carried a white outline. The 3.(J)/LG2 'mouse and umbrella' emblem was yellow with black details and applied to both sides of the rear fuselage. Note that although the I. Gruppe of LG2 was originally a Jagd, or fighter Gruppe, by mid-September it was operating a number of aircraft in the Jabo role. This aircraft was test flown in Farnborough in Oct before being scrapped

Clearly visible attached to the fin and tailplane leading edges are the three antenna leads for the FuG VII radio. On 31 August, despite still wearing a surgical boot fitted as a result of a recent motoring accident, Oblt. von Perthes took off in Bf 109E-7 WNr 5600 on a bomber escort sortie. Over Crowhurst, he was attacked by P/O M. Feric of 303Sqn and baled out of his aircraft. At 18.45hrs, Oblt. von Perthes landed at Hurst Green critically injured from numerous machine-gun bullet and other wounds, possibly from anti-aircraft fire. First admitted to a local hospital for immediate surgery, he was later transferred to the Royal Herbert Hospital in Woolwich but died on 14 September. It has been alleged that Oblt. von Perthes was shot and wounded while descending by parachute, but to date no factual evidence has been discovered to confirm this. His aircraft was the first Bf 109E-7 to crash in Britain.

Photo 01: Bf 109E-4 WNr.1399 was severely damaged during an operational sortie over England on 31 August and was subsequently written off. The emblem of 3.(J)/LG2, like several others of the period, included an umbrella as carried by the British Prime Minister, Neville Chamberlain, a habit the Germans found a source of some amusement. In an unposted letter found on one shot down POW, the writer, alluding to a successful German invasion and a subsequent posting to Britain, mentioned that in the future he hoped to observe this phenomenon for himself. This comment caused an RAF Intelligence Officer dryly to mention in his report that, since this individual was now in England, he was presumably satisfied his wish had been granted!
Painting Messerschmitt Bf 109E-4 3./LG2 (Brown 13+) being shot down by Pilot Officer Harold 'Birdy' Bird-Wilson of No.17 Squadron
Pilot Officer Harold 'Birdy' Bird-Wilson of No.17 Squadron in combat with Oberleutnant Hasso von Perthes of 3/LG2, 31st August 1940. Von Perthes baled out and was captured at Oxted, Surrey. His Me109 crashed at Crowhurst. During the Battle of Britain, 'Birdy' Bird-Wilson scored two victories and shared several others whilst flying this Hurricane (P3878, YB-W). But on 24th September 1940, he was shot down by the renowned Luftwaffe ace, Adolf Galland. 'Birdy' baled out injured and his Hurricane crashed into the Thames Estuary. Harold 'Birdy' Bird-Wilson returned to active service in November 1940 and ended the war as a Wing Commander. He retired from the RAF in 1974 as an Air Vice-Marshal.
