Remarks: POW over Tonbridge-Kent, after escorting Jabo's of 4/JG-54 over the greater London area. He successfully belly landed at Brooms Hill, near Lydd, Kent, when his engine overheated from fighter damage, and seized. One known victory, his 1st, a Hawk-75A southeast of Charleville, 14 May, 1940. On 17 May, 1940, he bailed out, slightly wounded, after an attack by a Hurricane of RAF No. 615 Sq.. Flugbuch (4/40 to 9/40). Another victory, his 2nd, a Blenheim at Haarlem on 27 June, 1940. His 3rd, a Spitfire 10 km SE of Ramsgate on 8 September, 1940. His 4th a Spitfire at Rochester on 5 October, 1940.

Remarks: Russian POW. Shot down in Wk# 9612 on 16 July, 1941; pilot returned. Twice shot down in 'White 9' over Russian territory but managed to get back to his unit. On , he was not so lucky. An Il-2, shot down by him, tore off his right wing, whereupon he had to bail out over Kiev and was taken prisoner. He returned in 1949. 180 missions. His first known Soviet victory, two SB-2's on 13 July, 1942. An I-16 Rata on 15 July, 1942. 1 victory in the West, a Spitfire on 7 June, 1941 at Cape Gris Nez. An additional 27 AC were destroyed on the ground. Bowers/Lednicer, 38 victories. Deceased 2 May, 1996.

Comments: Max Stotz (born 13 February 1912 in Mannswörth Lower Austria, MIA 19 August 1943 near Vitebsk) was a German former Luftwaffe flying ace and recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves (German: Ritterkreuz des Eisernen Kreuzes mit Eichenlaub). The Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross and its higher grade Oak Leaves was awarded to recognise extreme battlefield bravery or successful military leadership. A flying ace or fighter ace is a military aviator credited with shooting down five or more enemy aircraft during aerial combat.[1] Stotz was officially credited with shooting down 189 enemy aircraft claimed in more than 700 combat missions.

Career: Max Stotz joined the Bundesheer (Austrian Army) in 1933. In 1935 he was transferred to the Austrian Air Force and was trained as a pilot. After the Anschluss, Austria's annexation into the German Third Reich on 12 March 1938, Stotz was accepted into the German Luftwaffe. On 30 December 1942 Stotz claimed 10 aerial victories bring his total to 129.[2] Following aerial combat on 19 August 1943 with a large formation of Yakovlev fighters Stotz bailed out and was not seen again. He was last seen drifting down over Soviet held territory.[3]

Remarks: MIA 19 August, 1943 in aerial combat with a Yak 9 in Werk# 550201. Bailed out near Vitebsk, Russia (Map Quadrant 4572), landed in a wooded area 6 km behind enemy lines and was never seen again. His 1st victory, a Potez 63 near Völkingen, 7 November, 1939. On 29 June, 1941, in Werk# 8929, his AC was reported 50% damaged over Dünaburg S.U.. Also flew Fw 190A-5 'Black 5' in the Spring of 1943. Missing for a short time, but returned. Member of Austrian AF and aerobatics team since 1935. 700+ combat missions, 16 victories in the West. His 5th victory, a Morane 405 west of Laon France, 19 May, 1940. His first known Soviet victory, an I-16 Rata on 2 August, 1942. Three Yak-1's on 4 August, 1942. Two Yak-1's on 7 August, 1942. Two Pe-2's and a LaGG-3 on 9 August, 1942. Another of many multiples, three LaGG-3's and an Il-2 on 10 August, 1942. Two MiG-3's, two Yak-1's and a Pe-2 on 22 August, 1942. Three Yak-1's and a P-40 on 23 August, 1942. Two LaGG-3'and an La-5 on 12 December, 1942. Five LaGG-3's on 29 December, 1942. Nine LaGG-3's and an Il-2 on 30 December, 1942! Three LaGG-3's on 26 May, 1943. His last two victories, both LaGG-3's on 15 August, 1943.
