Messerschmitt Bf 109E3 III./JG3 (White 1+) Wilhelm Balthasar CO at Carquebut France July 1940 0A

Photo 0A by Eduard: The future Knight Cross with Oak Leaves recipient, Wilhelm Balthasar, was born on February 2nd, 1914 in Fulda. In 1933 he joined Reichswehr, in 1935, by his own request, he was transferred to Luftwaffe where he underwent the pilot training. During the Spanish Civil War he initially served with bomber and reconnaissance units, since September 1937 with fighter detachment of the Legion Condor. In March 1938 he returned to Germany. At the outbreak of World War II Oblt. Balthasar served as 1. Staffel JG 1 commander. This unit saw combat for the first time during the offensive against The Netherlands, Belgium and France. It was the time when Balthasar demonstrated his marksman skills, during the Western Europe campaign he shot down 23 enemy airplanes. As of June 5th, 1./JG 1 was re-designated as 7./JG 27. On September 1st, 1940 he was promoted to command III./JG 3 and in the air battles over the Southern England achieved further seventeen kills. In the meantime, on February 16th, 1941, he was promoted to command JG 2. His luck ran out during the combat with the RAF fighters over Aire on July 3rd, 1941. During the dive his Bf 109F-4 wing broke off and Balthasar perished at the impact with the ground. Balthasar’s aircraft, camouflaged in RLM 71/02/65 colors, carried the non-standard marking on the engine cowling. There is a unit marking painted under the windshield, kill markings are painted on the vertical tail surface and rudder.

Photo 01: A particular custom within JG3 was the identification of air and ground victories by upward and downward pointing arrows. This is the tail of W.Nr.1559, the Bf 109E-4 flown by Hptm. Wilhelm Balthasar, Gruppenkommandeur of III./JG3 in September 1940, and is marked with a total of 41 Abschussbalken, of which twenty-seven represent air-to-air victories, the twenty-seventh being claimed on 27 September 1940, the same day that the GruppenAdjutant of III./JG3, Hptm. Herbert Eggers, also scored the Gruppe's 100th victory. Balthasar had previously been Staffelkapitan of 7./JG27 and when he was given command of III./JG3 on 28 August, he brought his aircraft, with him.

Photo 01: On 1 September, Hptm. Wilhelm Balthasar became Kommandeur of III./JG3. Three days later, on 4 September, the Gruppe took off to escort bombers to Canterbury but before reaching the target, became involved in an air battle over England with 222Sqn. In this action, Balthasar achieved his 24th Abschuss but, in the same combat, his aircraft received hits in the cockpit area and he was wounded in the leg. Nevertheless, Balthasar managed to fly back to his base where he made a perfect landing. Fifteen days later, although still not fully recovered, hence the need for the walking-stick in this photograph - Balthasar rejoined his unit and claimed five more victories including two Spitfires on 23 September and two more on 29 October. Only in November did he return to hospital to give his wounds the opportunity to heal.

Profile 00: Messerschmitt Bf 109E.1 of 7./JG27 flown by Oblt. Karl Fischer, Bf 109E-1 'White 9' of JG27 was finished in an 02/71 upper scheme with the fin and fuselage sides carrying a fairly heavily applied mottle of 02 through which the overpainted Stammkennzeichen PH+LV was still faintly visible. The rear half of the spinner was painted white with the forward section remaining in black-green. The upper and lower cowlings and rudder were painted yellow with the white '9' on the cowling sides appearing on a masked-off vertical rectangle of the fuselage mottling. Although an E-1, the aircraft was fitted with the later, heavier framed canopy which had probably helped the pilot to escape injury when the aircraft overturned while forced landing in Windsor Great Park on

Photo's 01-02: Oblt. Karl Fischer of 7./JG27 was flying a bomber escort mission on when, on the way to the target, the formation was attacked by fighters. Although this aircraft became involved in a dogfight, combat was broken off and Fischer was unaware that his aircraft had been hit until an RGf message from his Rottenflieger informed him that his aircraft was streaming a white petrol plume. Looking at his fuel gauge, Fischer saw that his tank was almost empty so he made a forced landing in Windsor Great Park, during which the aircraft overturned but was little damaged.

Profile 00: Messerschmitt Bf 109E.3 'Black 7' of 8./JG27, Bad Zwischen hahn, late 1940. This machine was observed in Germany at the end of 1940 as elements of JG27 were withdrawn to rest. The fuselage is camouflaged in a standard high-demarcation 02/71 finish but, somewhat unusually considering the period this machine was observed, the fuselage sides remain in plain 65 with no mottling. Below the windscreen was a painted shield showing an Iron Cross First Class rising from the sea. It is believed this was the Staffel badge of 8./ JG27 before the unit adopted a later design featuring a black hand on a white disc.

Photo 01: This Bf 109E-1 at Westminster is 'Yellow 1', flown by Gefr. Walter Glockner of 9./JG27 on . After being damaged in combat over Canterbury by 603Sqn. Spitfires, Gefr. Glockner forced landed at Sandwich where he made a good belly landing and set fire to his aircraft. The aircraft number appeared on the engine cowling as was III./JG27's style and is therefore not visible in this photograph.

Messerschmitt Bf 109E-1 of 9./JG27 flown by Fw. Ernst Schulz This profile of 'Brown 7', the Bf 109E-1 flown by Fw. Ernst Schulz of JG27 is largely based on the photograph below and Crashed Enemy Aircraft Report No.34/1 of 19 September 1940. The aircraft is understood to have been finished in a high demarcation 02/71 scheme with 02 mottling of varying densities on the fuselage sides. The rudder, spinner and cowling were painted yellow, with the addition of three brown concentric rings on the spinner and a large brown '7' on each side of the cowling.

Photo 01: Having taken off as part of a bomber escort shortly after noon on , this aircraft, flown by Fw. Ernst Schulz of 9./JG27, was attacked over Canterbury by Spitfires of 603Sqn. Although little damaged, the pilot was forced down and made a successful landing near Sellinge, Kent. Fw. Schulz climbed out of his aircraft and then attempted to escape into a nearby wood, but he was shot by members of the Royal Tank Corps and so severely wounded in the left lung that he died on 26 September. This is the only known photograph of Fw. Ernst Schulz's aircraft.

Luftwaffe pilot Wilhelm Balthasar

Major Wilhelm Balthasar was born on 2 February 1914 at Fulda in Hessen. He served in an Artillery Regiment from 1933 but transferred as a Leutnant to the Luftwaffe in 1935. In November 1936, Balthasar joined the Condor Legion serving with the Aufklärerkette of Kampfgruppe K/88. He gained his first victory of the Spanish Civil War when, while on a reconnaisance mission, he shot down a Republican I-16 on 20 January 1937. On 15 March 1937, he joined Aufklärungsgruppe A/88 flying He 112s. He joined Jagdgruppe J/88 in September 1937. He gained a futher six victories with this unit including four SB-2 bombers shot down in one mission on 7 February 1938. He returned to Germany on 23 March 1938. In the 17 months he served in Spain, Balthasar had flown 465 combat missions. He was awarded the Spanienkreuz in Gold mit Schwertern und Brillanten in recognition of his feats there.

At the beginning of World War 2, Balthasar was Staffelkapitän of 1./JG1 and participated in the invasion of Poland. With the Blitzkreig of the low-countries and France, Balthasar was soon making his mark shooting down three Belgian Gladiator biplane fighters and a French Morane fighter on 11 May 1940. He claimed five French victims on 5 June, to record his 20th
through 24th victories, and claimed a further four on 6 June (25-28).

On 14 June, Hauptmann Balthasar was awarded the Ritterkreuz, only the second fighter pilot, behind Werner Mölders (115 victories, RK-Br, killed in flying accident 22 November 1941), to be so rewarded. In addition, he claimed 13 aircraft destroyed on the ground. He was considered the most successful German fighter pilot of the French campaign. On 5 July, 1./JG1 was renamed 7./JG27. On 1 September 1940, Balthasar was appointed Gruppenkommandeur of III./JG3. On 4 September, he was seriously wounded in leg over Canterbury in England in aerial combat with Spitfire fighters from 222 Squadron RAF. Despite the severity of his wounds, Balthasar was flying operationally 14 days later. On 23 September he shot down two Spitfires with only 88 bullets from cannons and MG`s. He claimed a further three victories before having to submit to hospital treatment for his wounds in November.

Major Balthasar was appointed Kommodore of JG2 on 16 February 1941. Between 22 June and 27 June, he shot down nine enemy aircraft, including five RAF Blenheim twin-engine bombers on 23 June (32-40). He was awarded the Eichenlaub (Nr 17) for 40 victories on 2 July. On 3 July 1941, Balthasar killed in aerial combat with RAF fighters near Aire, France. When Baltasar attempted to disengage from combat in Bf 109 F-4 (W.Nr. 7066) by diving, a wing of his aircraft folded and he crashed to his death southeast of St Omer. He was posthumously promoted to the rank of Major and buried in a World War 1 cemetary in Flanders alongside his father, who had fallen in the earlier conflict. Wilhelm Balthasar was credited with 47 victories. In 1939-41 he flew about 300 combat missions. Seven of his victories were recorded during the Spanish Civil War.
