Focke-Wulf Fw 190 D-13/R11 Yellow 10 W.Nr. 836017 Major Franz Götz, Geschwader Kommodore of JG26 Germany 1945

1-Fw 190D13-JG26-(Y10-+-)-Gotz-Germany-1945-01

Focke-Wulf Fw 190D-13/R11, W.Nr. 836017, Stab./JG 26, Flensburg - Weiche, Germany, May 1945

This aircraft had belonged to JG 26 and was captured by the RAF at Flensburg – Weiche airfield on May 5, 1945. It is highly possible that this aircraft was flown by Major Franz Götz, CO of JG 26 (Ritterkreuz holder, 63 victories). Yellow '10' is said to be Götz´s lucky number. The small Ace of Spades badge on both fuselage sides refers to his career in the role of III./JG 53 'Pik As' commanding officer. The small inscription on the lower part of the cowling is not accurately known – the most often mentioned likelihood is 'Kontrolliert', seen on other German aircraft. The R11 designation indicates installation of the PKS 12 autopilot, and the letter 'R' stands for Rüstsatz ('additional set' in German). The WFG factory camouflage scheme was darkened using RLM 82 and RLM 83 colours

Focke-Wulf Fw 190D-13/R11, W.Nr. 836017, Flensburg – Weiche, Germany, summer 1945

This Dora was captured by the Royal Air Force at Flensburg-Weiche airfield. The German national insignia was overpainted with a dark blue-grey colour by British personel with strangely positioned small white stars on the fuselage and wings. The inscription 'USA 14' was handpainted on the starboard side of the tail also. This aircraft took part in two mock dogfights with a Hawker Tempest Mk.V on July 25, 1945. The Dora was flown by German pilots – Maj. Heinz Lange (former Kommodore of JG 51, Ritterkreuz holder, 70 victories) a Oblt. Günther Josten (former Kommandeure of IV./JG 51, 178 victories). Based on this evaluation, both aircraft were considered to be nearly equal except for speed at height where the Dora was better. This Dora was handed over to the Americans and shipped overseas via Cherbourg, France, aboard the British aircraft carrier HMS Reaper to the U.S.A. It was restored and found its way to the Museum of Flight in Seattle, Washington. Unfortunately, the reconstruction of the camouflage scheme is not accurate.

Nakonec skonèila Museum of Flight v Seattle, provedená rekonstrukce kamufláže se bohužel pøíliš nepovedla.

The final development of the type D to see operational service was the Fw 190D-13, which replaced the two fuselage-mounted MG 131s with an MG 151 motorkanon, and was powered by the Jumo 213EB. Only two prototypes were completed before the end of the war. One was delivered to JG 26 in late March 1945, where it became the mount of Major Franz Gotz. Major Gotz, last Geschwader Kommodore of JG26, flew the Fw 190D-13 during April, 1945, marked as 'Yellow 10,' his 'lucky number' during his career as a 67-victory experte with JG53. He scored no victories with the airplane, as the unit only made five combat sorties during that month. Five of his 67 victories were four engined bombers. I couldn't install the new armament or motor, Sorry.

Fw190D-13/R11 W.Nr.836017 'Yellow 10-+-' Stab/Jg26. The only identifired D-13 of 2 mentioned in the March 1945 Distribution plan of luftwaffe fighters, the Werk number would suggest this is the 17 D-13 built but no documents have surfaced of the production logs of the type. The likly pilot of 'yellow 10' was maj. Franz Gots kommodore of Jg26 with the Pik A's logo and the romour that yellow 10 was Gotz' lucky number, This is the only Stab plane to have yellow codes. 'Yellow 10' was delivered in factory colours of RLM 81/83 over fuselage and RLM81/76 upper wings with 81 carrying over to the underside of the wings in a W3 pattern. At some point all the upper surfaces were painted in dense pattern of RLM 82/83 or 81 in what is probably the most elaberate 'greening' paint job seen at this point, its unlikely that this was done at any point of production and must be considered a 'one off' scheme painted in the field at the request of the kommodore as at such a late stage in the war its unlikly that anyone else would have the pull to have such a job done. It has been sugested that the word 'Kommodore' was painted on the underside of the radiator. Only the letters 'Ko' can be seen but its more likely to say 'Kontrolliert' meaning that the aircraft has been inspected and Neutrilised buy luftwaffe persondel under the supervision of RAF disarmament wing. this inscription is visible on other aircraft at Flensburg at the same time that 'Yellow 10' was there.
