Messerschmitt Bf 109E.1 of I./JG1, later III./JG27
A Bf 109E-1 'Red 9' of III./JG27 which, from careful study of photographs, appears to have been finished in a single upper surface color of either 70 or 71. As with a number of similar first generation Bf 109E photographs that have been subjected to close scrutiny to date, no indication of a second upper surface color has yet been determined. This has led to the belief that, for whatever purpose, some of these early models carried, at least temporarily, a single color upper surface finish.
Photo 01: A clear photograph of two Bf 109E-1s of I/JG1 (formerly I./JG131) which appear to be finished in a single upper surface color. No evidence of a splinter pattern can be determined. Considering the wide variety of camouflage patterns applied to the Bf-109 and the fact that there were many different factories and sub-contractors manufacturing the type it is not beyond the possibility that one or two batches were produced in the one overall upper camouflage color. It is also unlikely that completion would have been stopped because of a shortage of a specific camouflage color.
